Squaresoft, a company that was loved all over the world for their amazing games that range all the way from the 80's to the early 2000's. They were an immense powerhouse of gaming development and they made hit after hit after hit. If they were a boxer, they would be KO'ing their opponents left and right. Sadly, nowadays the current incarnation, Square Enix, just doesn't have the prowess that they once did. Sure, they have done re-releases of some of their all time Squaresoft classics, but that only shows how much better they were.

So with such a massive catalog to choose from, let's have some fun! What are some of YOUR favorite games form the Squaresoft era? There are a lot so have at it! ^-^

For me, I think I have at least two:

Final Fantasy 7. This one is pretty much a staple, but it is sooooo good. The music, the story, the gameplay, the materia system, it is all so fun and I just love this game. Sadly the 'remake' isn't looking too good to me.

And the other might already be...

Chrono Trigger. This is one I am actually playing for the first time on the Nintendo DS, but since it is basically the same exact game, it counts. :P So far I am loving it. It feels so very old-school square, the battle system is really cool and I feel like I have only scratched the surface.

Final fantasy IX is one of my all time favourite games, it really drew me into this other world, and I thought the story was excellent and it really had you caring what happened to the characters

When Zidane finds out his true purpose and falls into dispair - that is one of the most powerful moments in any video game that I've experienced

That said, VII was an excellent game too, but IX is my favourite (but I could never get into VIII for some reason :s )

My favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy IX. Great music, great story and also great character development. There is a constant alternance between comedy and sad moments, with some philosophic thoughts behind the scenes: a real hymn to life and its struggle against fear of death.

FF VI is also one of my favorites.

For other games, I like Kingdom Hearts a lot and I still plan to play Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Vagrant Story one day.  ^_^

I almost never remember which games were Squaresoft and which were Square Enix. In my mind they tend to mean the same thing.

I guess Final Fantasy IX since it was my favorite in the FF series for years. Wasn't a huge fan of Xenogears and for all its greatness I will never beat Parasite Eve and that makes me randomly resentful. :P

I haven't played many of their RPGs, but from what I've played, I got Final Fantasy VII a couple months ago and I really enjoyed it despite some saying it hasn't aged well, and I also kinda liked Super Mario RPG if it counts despite not being very good at it.

Final Fantasy Tactics is probably my favorite game of the 5th gen, though VIIIis probably my favorite of the main series.

Also love IV-X, parasite eve, Xenogears, and etc

FFVII having not aged well is mostly the graphics. Everything else is still pretty much standard for RPGs.

Even compared to the earlier games in the series it is legitimately the worst-looking FF game. :P

Ironically FFT is the game that turned me away from SRPGs in my earlier gaming days and then ended up being the first SRPG I beat after I had gotten back into them. Though it wasn't the first one I played I just never thought I'd ever beat a game in that genre.

Which still holds mostly true. The only SRPGs I've ever beaten were FFT and Wild Arms XF. The force is not with me in that genre. :P

Have you played I Am Setsuna? It plays a lot like Chrono Trigger and has a lot of parallels with games like Final Fantasy X.

I have, I like the game, but it's not quite "as good" as Chrono Trigger Dady. It's a good effort, but story wise and environment wise, Chrono Trigger still excels so much more than it.

I'm not all that far into it myself but I have a friend who considers it Game of the Year for 2016. And he's a huge fan of Total War: Warhammer.
