Is Discord to blame for Luna's transformation?

He ruled the land in chaos before Sunbutt and Luna EoH'd him, so they both had to restore the chaotic effects by manually changing the weather and day and night cycles. Likely- during Discord's reign, ponies were too afraid to go out at night, due to it being unsafe, and the lack of appreciation carried on during the era in which peace had been restored; thus driving Luna to jealousy that ponies were appreciating Sunbutt rather that her, since she was in charge of the sun, which represented the light of a new hope for olden ponies, after Discord's chaotic terror. So is Discord to blame for NmM? Can you guys see her trying to get to the root of her issues and burying the hatchet with Discord?.

I prefer to put the blame solely on Luna (comics aside) since it makes her a more realized character, and the best tragedy is when you are the victim of your own frailties and not an outside force. It also makes the triumph of overcoming such flaws a more potent storytelling device.

That is an interesting theory, but I think if you take the blame off of Luna, it makes her struggle with her inner demons less interesting.

That seems like a stretch, and it doesncl't make much sense. He didn't make night to be afraid of; it probably always had been.

basically took the words right out of my mouth: the theory is a stretch. It's never been stated that ponies were afraid to go out at night when Discord ruled the roost. He seemed to be frightening 24/7. On top of that, so far as the legend of Nightmare Moon goes, ponies used nighttime to rest, which is a perfectly natural thing. Luna, however, interpreted it as preference for Celestia and the daytime.

 

In short, Luna's jealousy was unrelated to Discord.

Discord was out and about, mocking around and commencing his chaotic ways, if not too seriously. He was having fun and I think that the hand in causing Princess Luna's Nightmare Moon transformation didn't spawn from Discord but the wrath of her very own internal plight for Celestia's glory. If he wasn't frozen to stone yet, I bet Discord would of just sat along ok finally seeing the two sisters arguing and probably just watch it for it's blatant chaos.
