simba86 1,541 September 14, 2016 Share September 14, 2016 (edited) it is actually a pretty common thing to rib on each other and give each other nicknames in real life, it is how you can bond with the group Edited September 14, 2016 by simba86 It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees! Thrond 3,263 September 15, 2016 Share September 15, 2016 I thought the episode was pretty great. Some people see it as being jackasses. I don't. I mean, honestly if we look at it from one perspective the Wonderbolts are military so little names should not bother you otherwise you shouldn't be there, but I don't like to look t it that way. I like to think of them like joining a sports team. I was in a sports team and people called me things, we called each other things. It wasn't meant to discourage it was just meant for fun. If you have a problem with a name then you should talk about it. And that's what this episode was. Rainbow Dash didn't feel comfortable telling the bolts that the name was actually offensive to her, but at the end when she finally does (not exactly the whole story but still) they tell her what they meant by it (meant for those who don't understand why the nicknames are, just for fun) and that was comfortable with her. Maybe in the future we will get an episode that 100% if you have a problem with something bring it up and then it will be solved (not all the time obviously it isn't real life) but I kinda felt like that was half of "The Cart Before the Ponies" But I do agree the writers do make the Wonderbolts, in other episodes, act strange, but I'm sure there is some justification to it somewhere. Other than that I thought the episode was cute, hilarious, and the ending was awesome. Think about it, they called her Rainbow crash, but where is she? In the WONDERBOLTS! They best aerial group ever! That means what? She is an incredible flyer and they all told her that. Rainbow took it the wrong way. I see it as the episodes are half to teach a lesson not to show how something should be done. So in other words I love the ending!!! "Duh! Because I'm a Wonderbolt!" This is more or less my opinion as well; I struggle to really adore it because of the cringe comedy in the latter half, but the more I think about it, the more I think it's a flawed but deeply admirable episode. I wish it had shown Dash's good side, but I don't think the writers really remember what that is anymore. Adding on to your last point: "Rainbow Crash" was a nickname once used to belittle her, but now it's a symbol of her accomplishments. It's a really uplifting irony which to me shows how far she's come, and it's sort of a final glorious slap in the face of everyone who doubted and belittled her. They're more preoccupied with adding new characters and making us care about Starlight (a lost cause for me) this season. But... there's fewer new characters this season, and they don't take the spotlight half as much as they did in season 5. And Starlight has barely shown up. Yeah I mean, it's not like Dash was even MORE inconsistent in S2 or just as inconsistent in S4 right? Frankly the only seasons Dash is written consistently are 3 and 5. Otherwise Dash is ether really great or possibly the worst character in the show depending on the episode pretty much consistently. Dash fans frankly to me seem to be in denial about both her record on the show and who she even is as a character. The Wonderbolts have been kind of a mess for a while now though yeah. RD was pretty damn inconsistent in season 4, but at least it started by painting her in a good light. Can't think of a single episode in season 5 which portrayed her all that flatteringly except "The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone," and even there I found her mostly uncompelling. I like her a lot more in season 2, but also recognize that she wasn't at the peak of her maturity, and that S2 was the season of "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well." I do know that I've been pretty consistently dissatisfied with her character arc since "Rainbow Falls," to the point that "Newbie Dash" is easily one of my favourite Rainbow Dash episodes in the past three seasons. Sparklefan1234 172,552 September 15, 2016 Share September 15, 2016 (edited) Yeah... Going to be honest, I'd be quite happy if Dash's arc ended with her succeeding in her goal, but coming to the realization that the wonderbolts aren't what she envisioned them in her childhood, and move on to refocus her life on something else, like either forming her OWN flight group, or trying to be a freelance adventurer ala daring do. Those would be really cool ideas for future story arcs with Rainbow Dash. Edited September 15, 2016 by Sparklefan1234

Thrond 3,263 September 15, 2016 Share September 15, 2016 (edited) You didn't like Stranger than fan fiction? "Rarity Investigates!," "The Saddle Row Review," and "Stranger Than Fan Fiction" are exceptions to the rule. "Trade Ya!" is mostly fine as well, and the latter half of "Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3" makes up a little for its first half. Castle Bleck 19,379 September 15, 2016 Share September 15, 2016 (edited) Doesn't the military IRL do that "nicknaming" thing, too? And furthermore, the Wonderbolts didn't actually know about her history with the "Crash" moniker. So the whole "WONDERBOLTS ARE OOC JERKS NOW!" thing doesn't really click with me at all (outside of Rainbow Falls, that is). Edited September 15, 2016 by A.V. Dash basically agrees and then IMMEDIATELY realizes "Oh crap, WTF did I just do?!". Its like saying something offhand without thinking it through and then suddenly doing a double take.

Dash is a little weird in making that choice, but she pretty quickly realizes what she did wrong. Still think it's a little weird that the episode goes there, though.
