Does twilights use of magic even make sense?

I just watched the episode feeling pinkie keen.

Later in that episode the mane 6 run away from a big hydra monster. The reached a cliff where everypone jumped above stone platforms to reach the other side. But the platforms got destroyed by the hydra before twilight reached the other side.

 

Pinkie pie: Twilight you HAVE TO JUMP.

 

What?????? She's an unicorn with the magic abillity to teleport herself. WHY didn't she just teleport herself to the other side?

 

SO WHY DID SHE JUMP IN THIS MOMENT OF DANGER???

It might have been an oversight on the writer's part since Twilight should've teleported during that situation.

That early in the series, her teleportation abilities weren't the best. I remember some episodes like the Ticket Master and Dragon Quest showing she had some real difficulty teleporting when under stress, so when being chased by a Hydra she might have figured it wouldn't work.

Likely because the writers need Twilight to have a moment where she had to trust Pinkie in spite of her own judgment.

yeah I remember that too. a lot of her magical abilities weren't the best either that early in the series actually... its kinda like how fluttershy is a Pegasus but couldn't fly that well. (before anyway ) same kinda applies to unicorns. (I guess )

In Fluttershy's case her lack of flying skill seems to have mostly been a mental block, as when given significant motivation, such as catching up to Dash to help stop Discord, or helping raise the water to Cloudsdale, she can fly pretty darn well, but her lack of confidence in her abilities kept her from using it.

 

 We haven't really seen many ponies teleporting, outside of I believe Twilight, Sunset and Starlight, so it's probably just a really difficult spell, and how good she is at it now is a testament to how much she's grown.

Just remember the premier against Nightmare Moon. She gets to the elements by teleporting, but has to mentally prepare herself to do so. She's been that way pretty much all of season 1, but has grown better since. Under the stress, maybe she hadn't even thought of using it. Just like how Spike gets stuck and she physically goes back to him, instead of levitating him. That and It was still quite new to her and is likely a somewhat high-level spell.
