snowflame 189 December 1, 2016 Share December 1, 2016 Well, its true that most things associated with a person or pony are ussually static. if you have red fur, and you share off your fur, it will grow back red again. If someone magically takes your ability to play an instrument, restoration magic will of course restore the same talent, because its restoration magic. But talents and affinities can change over time without magic. Right now the show hasn't reflected that in any way. It just puts ponies into boxes. Like others have been saying, cutie marks aren't exclusive, but they should reflect the main talent a pony has. If they develop their individual talents more than 'helping ponies find cutie marks' its perfectly plausible. It's not so farfetched and infact might be a good message to send. For example, if i have a job as a newspaper pony, and a job at a bakery, and my cutie mark is in newspaper delivery, all well and good. But if I then ascend the ranks and become the master of the bakery, and from there I advance to head the bakers guild in the entire town, it would not make sense for me to still have a cutie mark in newspaper delivery. In your excample the pony's propose and true talent to them would always have been newspaper. So even if the pony got a promotion at the bakery this would not change their passion. Which would lead the pony probably never acending as high in the bakery as you suggested since the pony might be busy writing food reviews in the newspaper while working in the bakery. You can combine passions like this. Or the pony work just leave the bakery when a good newspaper related job opens up. However the pony could have super work ethic and do what you said at the same time as doing something newspaper related. Maybe at some point there would be nothing newspaper related so the pony would continue to work in a bakery field only. But this would not change the pony's true purpose at all and when a job in newspaper field would open up and the pony had to choose between jobs the pony would take it. Not because the pony was forced to or because the pony now does not care about bakery or can't do it anymore just that the pony would WANT to do this because this is the pony's true self and destiny. I think you just need to accept that ponies are not the same as humans. Humans do not have true special talent and and destiny even if they are good at something and pasionate about it. But everything we have seen suggest ponies do. You are bothered by this difference between the show and reality for us but it does not mean this can't be the case. This philosophy is the whole reason I think they should have them change. I don't think desires should be assumed to be predetermined. Again that we do not know whether they can change or not; we just havent observed any change. And its not like it would be very common if it could happen. IMO changing makes more sense than having generic talents, which in turn still makes more sense than predetermined desires that the pony will have throughout their entire lives. OK maybe im being a little harsh here, but i just really don't like that idea Edited December 2, 2016 by trademark2 Feel free to message or add me everypony! Steve Piranha 29,425 December 2, 2016 Share December 2, 2016 The cuties' original talents are still there, and they can still do it, they've just scrapped their symbols on their flank by now. Cadance in her chapterbook said it: Just because your cutie mark shows you a talent, that doesn't mean you have to be stuck with that talent and not be good at anything else Sig by Discords
PonyMage 228 December 4, 2016 Share December 4, 2016 Because I want to believe all the interesting possibilities opened up by those old talents haven't been completely thrown away, darn it. This isn't pretty but it's what I am tonight.
