K.Rool Addict 719 April 15, 2017 Share April 15, 2017 Does anyone here genuinely enjoy motion/ touch controls in video games? I really would like to know why. Personally, I grew up with an NES, Genesis, and Gameboy and have bought nearly every console/ handheld by Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and Microsoft up til this point. The one thing that I cannot stand in any capacity is any form of control outside of traditional buttons, analog sticks etc. Touch and motion controls generally feel so tacked on and overly simplified to compensate for the lack of dexterity most players will have when they start out. Please tell me what I'm missing (if anything lol). Why?
Nightshroud 331 April 15, 2017 Share April 15, 2017 (edited) it depends on how they are implemented into the game is what either help or hurt the game. in my opinion. Games like ace attorney which use the touch screen to press the statement. check evidence and present evidence. is pretty useful. but like in diddy kong racing on the ds it ruins the game quite a bit due to the gimmiky boost starts. games with motion controls I enjoyed the most are sonic and the black knight it feels responsive enough to where it don't hamper the game. wii sports is pretty fun as well the motion controls are fluid and responsive. on the other hand sonic and the secret rings the motion controls were shoe horned in last minute. Floofie 799 April 15, 2017 Share April 15, 2017 I'm usually okay with touch controls in games. Like Nightshroud said, Ace Attorney is an example of a game that implements touch controls well. Another example would be Bloons Tower Defense. On the PC version, you would click and drag the towers to place them, but on the mobile port*, you just tap the tower and drag it onto the map. The touch controls in that game don't feel forced at all, and suit the game really well. But on something like Metroid Prime Hunters, having to aim by moving the stylus around feels akward to control. Motion controls, on the other hand, are something that I've never liked. On the few games with motion controls that I've played, the motion controls never felt responsive to me. I'm grateful when a game gives me the option to choose between motion or buttons, because I'll always choose buttons. *Yes, I know that Bloons TD 1 never got a mobile port. I'm talking about the other games in the series here.
Dreambiscuit 11,300 April 16, 2017 Share April 16, 2017 Touch controls are a good idea, but before it can be a truly worthwhile tool it has to be perfected. It seems a bit twitchy and doesn't always react as desired. Push button controls are nice (not that they're exactly perfect either) but they have to be arranged well or they're useless. My favorite controller ever is the N64 because it has the central handle that makes it easier to hold the controller while accessing all the right buttons. Also, a lot is based on how many buttons are needed to perform a single action. I don't like games where you need to hold this, this and this while pressing this, etc. just to do a simple move. Basically, if it's simple and it works, it's good for me. Motion controls are okay, but isn't it time to make true VR a more affordable mainstream solution? Megas 28,119 April 16, 2017 Share April 16, 2017 Motion controls are great when used properly, and unfortunately those games were few and far in between. On top of that they usually relied on different and unconventional controls touch controls are easier to implement and generally work better
Ganondorf8 11,706 April 16, 2017 Share April 16, 2017 Motion controls can be a lot of fun, provided that they work as intended. If not then it becomes a painful experience that lessens the overall fun and you could end up getting very frustrated, if not worse. Personally, I do prefer a traditional controller for most things but I will give motion controls a chance.
BlueStreak98 828 April 16, 2017 Share April 16, 2017 I like the idea behind them, but at this point the thinking is still a little bit ahead of the available technology. I never liked using directional pads for first person shooters. Far too imprecise for my liking. "I still believe that peace and plenty and happiness can be worked out some way.
