Why does Twilight know about it, in "Its About Time"? How did she come to know bout it, let alone where its located, to go bring Cerberus back there? Did Sunbutt inform her of it? If so, then WHY did she need to know? What connection does Sunbutt have with Tartarus, to send out "lost dog" flyers for Cerberus? Am I the only one who is still wondering/ hanging onto hope that this area and unanswered questions will be explained?

its still a relevant topic, because unanswered questions. it doesn't matter if its generation 1. so long as things haven't been explained. Its not really necro-ing.

Considering it was Celestia and Luna who originally defeated and sent Tirek to Tartarus in the first place, I would say their connection to it is that Tartarus might be located somewhere in Equestria and it's essentially this world's Alcatraz that Celestia and Luna use whenever special means of imprisoning like turning to stone aren't necessary. And it's not like Tartarus' existence was ever made out to be a secret. It's probably common knowledge that it at least exists if anypony (like Twilight) was doing research.

These aren't really unanswered questions that need explaining, these just seem like minor things that weren't fully said but one can easily fill in the blanks.

That's all the more worrying, if it was knowledge anypony could get to.  No telling who could just  go to Tartarus and release whoever. And why isn't it on the Equestria map? New regions like Yakyakistan and Griffinstone are on it....

I said that Tartarus' existence might be common knowledge. Its specific location might not be something normally shared. As the personal student to Celestia, Twilight might have clearance to find out that location, like how she could also go into a guarded library wing in the middle of the night if she wanted to.

Considering that the Season 8 image they released looks to invoke Tartarus, perhaps we will learn more next year. Until then I'm going with the idea that Celestia obviously knew about it and informed Twilight. What use is having a protege if you aren't going to let them in on a few pieces of cool classified information.

Hmm, I believe Tartarus to be just that... the underworld where all ancient evils are imprisoned, well, the ones that can be, because lets be real, if they put Discord in there, he would wake up and probably just one shot Cerberus. 

 

Perhaps the ancient evil from the the #50-53 comic arc resides in Tartarus.

 

Anyway, if Tartarus is equivalent to the greek mythology one. Hades pls.
