Saving thrift ponies- is it a better cause?

Recently, I’ve taken to browsing ebay and shopgoodwill to find secondhand (or in package) ponies that are no longer in stores- many of which are past gen. Now, I like thrifting, and usually when I go to brick and mortar stores, I wind up finding more clothes than I do ponies, so when I do find thrift shop ponies, I feel compelled to take them home and try to save them from the scrap heap. And while I don’t really NEED any more ponies, due to lack f space and money, I’m always left wondering- is it better to buy secondhand ponies online (or offline) to try to preserve them from further damage than they would be exposed to if they were bought and landed in the hands of a child who doesn’t appreciate their value? (especially with the g1- g3 ponies, which are no longer in production)

Is ebay better or shopgoodwill? While ebay has free shipping on some pony listings, shopgoodwill does not, but you can find more offers that are selling assortments in bulk.

Hi, as this is a merchandise related thread, it has been moved to the appropriate sub-forum.

If you want more consistency, eBay, or toy forums  where you can buy and trade is your best bet. But sometimes you can find real treasures at thrift stores.  I know people have found  rare, expensive ponies like Rapunzel, Crumpet, the Mountain Boys and SS Twilight.

It's fine to collect ponies, but to do it just to keep them from being played with by children seems a little mean spirited to me. I think a child playing with a pony (or any toy) appreciates the value far more than someone that wants to just put the item on a shelf.

I think you misunderstand. There are some pretty rare ponies out there, and ones that aren't in production any longer. A kid wouldn't know that, and likely be prone to on damaging it beyond repair. Some ponies are fine to play and roughhouse with, but rare finds like Mimic, Star Swirl, or Comic Con exclusives wouldn't be.

I think it is a perfectly good thing to do. Like you mentioned, in a manner of speaking you are saving them. Many of them end up in unexpected places and are further defaced or destroyed by someone who does not know the value, history or whatever about the item they hold... or perhaps they just do not care. Sure a collector who may cherish it may acquire it, but you just never know. You can always set yourself up on a pony group to set up trades for these figures you may acquire, or look into selling them to good homes and such. At the end of the day it still may end up in a bad place, but at least for a little while you can maybe rescue it and give it a chance to be cherished by someone who would love to do so.

Geez, it sounds like I am talking about a pet vs. a plastic toy.

Ah! Okay, so she's SS Twilight. One other minor question. What does the SS stand for?

So-Soft. This set has got soft, fuzzy flocking. Think toys like the Sylvanian family.

OMG! Jokes aside, I remember now that I had a couple when I was like 8! I don't remember ever watching any G1 though.
