"Contemporary" refers to someone of being around the same age. All supplementary material points to Starswirl being a lot older than Celestia and Luna.

And according to Firedog, their gen 5 would take place when Starswirl was young, which means it'd be before Starswirl met Celestia and Luna, before Equestria was founded, and before the three races learned to get along with each other.

Not sure that really counts - how do you compare the ages of mortals and immortals? But I don't know when Celestia and Luna were born, relative to Starswirl, or if the supplementary material is binding on show cannon.  It's entirely possible to build a show around a Celestia-centric main 6 with Starswirl of similar age to the rest, if the writers really want to.

Actually, it can mean both. I just assumed from the way it was worded you got the impression that Starswirl, Celestia, and Luna were of the same age group instead of just all being around at the same time. I mean by the definition you chose, someone could say that Theodore Roosevelt was technically Abraham Lincoln's contemporaries even though you wouldn't normally group the two former presidents like that just because Teddy was born seven years before Lincoln's assassination.

He's been shown to be an old pony while Celestia and Luna were still young blank flanks. This is both in the recent comics (which have been getting even more in-tune with the show including a series of comics that have featured characters that the show hasn't introduced yet) and in the journal written by show writer Amy Keating Rogers which had input from both story editor at the time and current Head of Storytelling Meghan McCarthy and original creator Lauren Faust.

No way, G5 needs to be a hard reboot. New Land, Characters, History, and Universe. Just like all the others. Completely different in every way. Otherwise it will just be a continuation of G4 and get boring after 1 season. WE need new everything!

I think the other generations did a complete reboot due to the fact the previous generations weren't all the popular.

 

Going to the past would allow for new places, characters, history. Just not a different universe.

They had to do a complete reboot for G3 because Sunbow Entertainment still owned the rights to the characters and shows they did back in the 80s and 90s. Regardless of popularity for the original MLP and MLP Tales, they were forced to start anew. And after the success of Michael Bay's Transformers in 2007, Hasbro wanted to emulate that success by looking for more creative stewards to reinvent some of their series like Bay did. Lauren was brought in to put her own spin on things for G4, just like they had completely new Pound Puppies, Littlest Pet Shop, G.I. Joe and Transformers cartoons being made with their own creators spin on the cartoons.

And plenty of series wind up rebooting usually because they really were popular but that popularity was waning and/or the show has run its course and needed a new creative lead with their own universe. It's happened with Batman, Transformers, etc. And with ratings dipping and this series lasting for 7, soon to be 8 seasons, I think they would more likely try and renew interest by starting a new take on the characters we know, rather than make a prequel series set in the same universe and continuity.

If they did do it in the same universe, it has to be in the future with characters not related to the mane cast that currently have right now. Or just different characters altogether.
