Pretty much what is happening here - fire brigade are doing their best to keep it away from the residential areas, and we have some RAF Chinooks doing airdrops of water - but it restarts whenver they think they have it out.

Not good; doesn't seem to be much wind down here though, so hopefully that's true up your way, too.

Well now a hill a couple miles from my house has also caught fire so things are going great!

Lovely.

Do you think you might have to evacuate, or will you be relatively safe?

At the minute I'm relatively safe, turns out some guy got arrested for causing the fire today...

On another note, I spent the evening sat in front of the telly watching MLP with a glass of Applejack I got imported from the states- Easy to say I've had a brilliant night

Good, glad they caught him.  I hate people that do stuff like that. (retired volunteer firefighter)

Glad your night is going well.  I'm relaxing with a nice cold cider myself.

If you don't mind me asking what is your new job position going to be exactly?

He's gonna be the new nightly dispatcher for the company he works for, right @Longhaul?

I will be the new night dispatcher, working with the senior loader.  My job will be getting the drivers out with the proper paperwork and coordinating with the senior loader to get the trailers loaded properly and quickly.

why is it that I never see this thread here yet it's been active for the past 10 minutes. I guess WPCC just overshadows it. :sealed:

That sounds interesting. I thought it was like when you tell them where to drive and check up on the drivers over the radio while you sit at a desk.

We don't use radios, mostly due to the distances involved, but if one of the drivers has a problem on the road, they'd call me and we'd get it solved.  I do also set the schedule as to where each driver goes with which load.

But don't the trucks still have the like, trucker radio system or whatnot that a lot of truckers from like everywhere use to communicate with each other on like road conditions and such?

The only trucks that have CBs are the ones where the driver buys it themselves.  Not every truck has one.  And, because we're a slip-seat operation, not a lot of drivers like leaving things in the trucks.

I see, so it would make more sense if they got to keep the same truck all the time or drove longer distances maybe. Do you own a CB @Longhaul? I mean at one point you were a cross-country driver, right? :dash:

I had one, and I had it installed in my truck.I barely used the thing, just mostly listened for word of trouble ahead.

I know a few drivers in ur company that keep radios in their trucks, it's mostly a matter of personal preference.

What sort of trucks did you drive?

This is the truck I drove.  It's a Peterbilt model 579 day cab, pulling a 53-foot Vanguard trailer with roll-up door.

I was sure it was something like that, without the cab on the back since you don't do day long trips.

Everything out of my terminal is round-trip, and doable overnight.  We do have some sleepers, but those are used by other terminals that travel a bit further.

Cool. How long would you say an average to your destination would have been?

About 4 hours and 15 minutes one way.  My furthest stop would take about 5 hours.

Imagine how hard it would be to get up for that horse if it fell over.

At least it's low enough that it wouldn't fall far.
