Exactly how big is ponyville?

I've never been entirely sure on that one to be honest. Sure we only see those 4 living in the farmhouse but Applejack introduces a LOT of Apple's when Twilight first goes there in season 1 and then during winter wrap up there's a lot of ponies pulling those field tilling machines. Plus we know there's an entire wester orchard or was it eastern, so tired, either way that orchard is out of use due to fruitbats. My current theory is that those 4 are the permanent farmers doing the day to day running of the farm but other Apple's come round to help them during the harvests and planting seasons we just don't see them as they're background ponies.

I’d say that PonyVille is around the same size as High Prarie, Alberta.

Another clue is that the town has its own dedicated railroad station. It wouldn't even have it if its as small and unimportant as you say because why bother build it otherwise.

True, said train station was there long before Twi drank her Red Bulls, so it's doubtful it's a backwoods town in the middle of nowhere. Still, it does feel bigger than before, out of universe due to the improvements with Flash, but in universe would make sense as well considering their rather recent princess
