Could someone please tell me how to edit in a quote to an existing post?

I've tried several times to edit in a quote to a post I made when I realized I've missed something I want to respond to but it always go to the new post at the bottom of the page. Could someone tell me how I can edit a post and add a quote to it rather than needing to make a new post please?

(edited)

Full site on the laptop mobile is generally only to browse as I don't like typing out long posts on that. If i wanted to quote you right now that's no problem, I click "Quote" or the + "Multi Quote" then hit the + to get the quote into what I'm typing. However once I'm posted both those options go into a new post not the one I'm trying to edit.

Like this, I can't get it to go up into the edited post.

Ahh, I know what you are talking about now. I changed the auto-merge timing. A new post made four minutes after a previous post will create a separate post. It used to be turned off, then it was adjusted to 30 minutes, but I've found too many use cases where I need to post something that creates a new post instead of merging.

So if I understand you right . . .

1) Within four minutes I just make a new post and it'll merge to the existing one.

2) After four minutes I can edit a quote into an existing one.

3) If I try to edit a quote into an existing post within four minutes it goes to the new post box because of the way the site is set up?

Is that right?

Kinda. If you want to add a new quoted item into an existing post you would need use the edit link in post you want to change.

I'll need to try this in a threat that doesn't need moderator approval I think the quote keeps going to a new post.

Hmm.. It's actually quite simple and quick to do. :P

So From The Beginning...

Imagine you have made a post and then noticed, that you forgot to quote one more user or the post you want to quote appeared just before you posted.
You want to edit the post to include it, but you bump into a problem, where clicking 'quote' goes to a new post instead of the one you're editing.
It may seem confusing at first, but all you need to do is to just move it to the post you're currently editing.

There is a relatively quick way to achieve this,
just follow these steps...

ahl9nn8.png

First, edit your post like you were trying to do so far.
That is, click "Edit" on the post you want to add content and then quote the post or fragment you want to include.

Oh, what's this?
The quote went to a new post instead the one you want to edit? What a shame.

- But there's no need to worry!
If the editor doesn't want to cooperate, let's move it manually.

ahl9nn8.png

Go to the new post, where the quote went and press CTRL + A to highlight the quote and then CTRL + X to cut it out.
Now just go back to the post you're currently editing, move the text cursor to a desired position and press CTRL + V to paste the quote.
After that you're free to write your reply below it.

And voila!
You have successfully added a quote to the existing post, rather than having to post it in a next, separate reply.

This will also perform flawlessly when using "Multi Quote".
Just select the posts you want to quote, throw these into that new post and do the same steps as before.
CTRL+A+X to cut all quotes, then CTRL+V to nicely paste them into the post you want to edit.

I hope that helps!
