Also, pony Twilight is an adult, while human Twilight is a schoolgirl, though she hopefully is in 12th grade, so, maybe old enough for it to not be weird.

But there are exceptions. The human Mane 7 will still most likely be friends. I mean I went to school with my two best friends only until grade 8, after that we went to different schools (and moved to different parts of the city) and different universities. We are still good friends, many years after finishing school and even more years after our last class together.

Another good point on that, the age issue. "Weirdness" aside, a lot of people change during the transition from school to "life." The girls have a lot of growing to do yet.

On the friendship issue I'm thinking in terms of their dynamic though. At least part of what they do requires them to be together just like their Pony counterparts. I've always imagined a smarter villain biding their time and being like, "I'll just wait till they go to college, and then this place is mine!" That they chose the "Forgotten Friendship" story to tell in what was clearly their senior year (and also them acknowledging what was apparently their last beach party together), left a dark vibe in my mind. I guess when it comes to which I prefer it's also important to consider the world. The "Equestria" in E.G. (as all high school experiences are) is a microcosm; it's contained in a bubble that will pop when "reality" (graduation) hits. Equestria proper on the other hand, is the normal reality.

But the ponies live separately, have their own lives and, I assume, are not together 24/7. However, they live in the same town, so if there is some problem, they can get together. I do not see why this cannot be true for the humans too. Even if they go to separate universities or something they may still live in the same city or come back to the city after finishing university.

That's true. Still, 7 friends remaining friends even if they work/learn in different places is not that strange I think. Also, consider that their friendship is, essentially, battle-hardened.

Oh I know, but travel is at least easier, and none of them seem to be in situations where they can't take time off whenever they need to; I suspect the Pony work-week is a lot less demanding though too. Even then, getting from Ponyville to Canterlot is a lot simpler than having to book a plane flight for $1k on short notice, and Celestia forbid anyone ever have to say, "Oh, yeah, I'm taking an unscheduled vacation tomorrow, have to go save the world." Generally though, people staying in the same place anymore is just rare. Everyone has to go where the money is. Even trying to schedule family reunions in the modern world is nigh impossible because everyone is somebody else's 'slave.'

There's probably a lot more we could both say about this, but I don't want to completely derail the thread.

I thought he was just specifically hung up on Pony Twilight, not Pony girls in general. And on that, I don't know, personality-wise, there seems to be a rather noticeable personality divide between E.G. Twilight and the Pony one. I think it's because before she was introduced, Sunset had already become the Twilight of the group.

Even aside from them though, with Pony RD as a waifu, when I think about her E.G. counterpart... yeah, she's still attractive and fun, but... my gut feeling is that would be a much more strained relationship than it would be with the Pony. Is it just because of all the extra teen angst that pervades high-school, even one as utopian as Canterlot High?

Also in the back of my mind, I also know that there's much less to worry about with the Ponies. They're established in their lives and their jobs. Ponyville is their home. We all know what usually happens to friendships at the end of highschool (unless Canterlot High is in some kind of Neverland where nobody ever has to grow up).

Maybe you're right. I might be misremembering. I have to be honest in that I'm not what you'd call a real fan of Flash Sentry, though I don't hate him or anything.

There are only two pony girls there - unless you count the Pinkie thing as canon :)

Flash Sentry was originally dating Sunset, then started chasing Pony Twi, then after THAT clearly wasn't going to work, got brushed off by Sunset, again.

Haven't seen him show any interest in any other character (despite Derpy being there to console him each time he got brushed off...)

That didn't sit well with me, but then... hey, blame the hormones? Just knowing how Sunset was, and she showed later that she was indeed capable of such, my gut told me that there was some magic manipulation going on in that relationship. I get that Sunset was OK later, but just the knowledge that his memory of them together was probably clouded by mind control... that would make me wary of getting involved in that again. That'd be like giving a second chance to somebody who drugged you.

I'm really not either. I don't even have a ship for him. Not that I think he doesn't deserve someone or anything; it really feels like he's become the Zander of the school somehow though.

But... I had absolutely no trouble understanding how he felt.

Spoiler

I don't think there's an FiM image that I relate to more than this. :(

As far as I can tell, Sunset couldn't use magic until she got Twi's crown (and later, the geode of course; that was SciTwi's fault though, as the gateway is leaking equestrian magic after the statue was blown up.)

Really though, magical manipulation wasn't required; Sunset was a queen bee at that school prior to Twi's arrival, and invariably manipulated people into getting what she wanted.  This happens all the time, and not just to teens. When she got Twi's crown though, she began to act out her worst impulses using the Elemental power it contains (I think the current narrative is that she was overwhelmed by the power, as was SciTwi later on, and to a certain extent, Gloriosa or Juniper Montage. I am not sure that wasn't retconned for the second movie though, rather than being canon before then)

Well, the Sunset he dumped was a bitchy, manipulative witch. The Sunset he is now flirting with again is aware of her faults and failings, and desperate for the friendship and support of the other girls; she is the defacto leader of the group now, but invariably defers to her new mentor Twilight, which is I think a way to keep her own ego in check. She is, as she claims to Celestia, a "changed pony".
