I've read very little of Asterix, but he's apparently REALLY popular in Europe.

He created quite a legacy along with René. I would say most people in the western world knows of Asterix and Obelix. I have read a lot of the comics in English and managed to get through one in French. One thing I think is a testament to the translators is how the jokes are reworded to work well both in French and English, though I wasn't so confident with my understangin of the French ones the could be miles better.
