movies/tv Most Overrated and Underrated Animes?

The title says it all. Which Animes do you think are most overrated and which ones do you think are most underrated?

As for me, I'd have to say these:

Most Overrated:

1. One Piece
2. Fairy Tail
3. Nanatsu No Taizai/The Seven Deadly Sins (70% of it is just groping and perverted teasing. And only 30% of it is story.)
4. Boku No Hero Academia/My Hero Academia (The story can be good at times, but I feel the anime is overall a little too silly for it's own good.)
5. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

Most Underrated:

1. Bleach
2. DragonBall GT (It deserves credit for at least trying to have new ideas instead of mostly just rehashing old content like Super did.)
3. Zatch Bell
4. Black Clover

That's what comes to mind off the top of my head. I might add more later.

Naruto started sucking when it went in hard with the Sasuke worship

I don't know much anime from what I've seen that I would consider underrated. Closest I could see is Saint Seiya, because in America I remember a ton of my friends shitting on it hard likely due to the atrocious DiC dub(whereas it was fairly popular in Mexico for example)

I would probably agree if you hadn't put black clover as under rated and jojo's as over rated.

Black clover is... "what worked on other shonen that we can copy without getting sued?" the anime.

Zatch bell was... meh.

GT was shitty until they reached the super 17 arc, but unfortunately they had already ran out of budget and all the good parts from GT were rushed. What a shame.

Bleach started strong, and went bad over the course of time to the point if was cringey to watch.

Now, as of over rated animes I can think of that you didn't already mention:

  1. Shingeki no kyojin: Back in the day it sounded cool, but as the story progressed it went from Wow to Really? Actually, for me, the show crashed once Eren started to morph into a Titan. Not that the next episodes weren't good, is just... it was a forced power up of sorts and it didn't felt like seinen to me anymore. It didn't make too much sense either.
  2. Sword Art Online: You should probably have seen this one comming. Is the wishful desire of your average neckbeard basement dweller. The first episode was really good, but by the next one the whole thing went down the drain, and the protagonist is not only obnoxious, but lame. Doesn't help the author really tries hard to make Kirito look badass, which makes him merely an author pet. Anyone with enough experience on mmorpgs knows all the bullshit Kirito pulls out like beating raid bosses by himself are downright ridicule for the nature and stats of them. There's an isekai way better which I'll mention later on.
  3. Pokemon in general. Seriously, do I even have to say anything?
  4. Axis Power Hetalia. Let's be honest, fangirls spammed that thing everyfuckingwhere, and that's about why it got so popular.

Underrated, I know quite a bunch, some receive way less attention than they should probably because either their author had other more popular works or because there was a direct competitor that resulted to be more popular on the long run.

  1. Mob Psycho 100: Mob has been dubbed in many places as "Saitama with hair", but honestly, aside from being overly powerful, both things are different to an extend if the art style was different you would probably be unable to relate them. Mob has a heavy slice of life to it and goes about growing up and dealing with life that how ridicully overpowered Mob is goes to the background and you're prone to identify both with him and Reigen more than once. Ihighly recommend it, it's somewhat wholesome and you might end up feeling better about yourself after watching it.
  2. Log Horizon: This isekai here breaks the usual formula we see on those "you're trapped in an mmorpg". They try to keep the in-game logic and the game rules actually make sense and affect the plot. Good characters, interesting plot and no god modding, with a heavy weight on strategy not only for your average battle, but of in-game economy. If you're the kind of person who gets bored easily by thriller and politics, stay away from this one.
  3. Gakkou gurashi: Don't look up the plot on this one. If you haven't watched it and you're on your late teens or already an adult, then go for it. I assure you, the first episode is probably the worst because they set you up for an average moe slice of life show. But it turns out to be amazing once that episode is over. It gets better at something I didn't think I would actually enjoy. The soundtrack is memorable and the characters are lovely. Just don't investigate anything before watching the first episode. Trust me, is worth the wait.
  4. Inuyashiki: Tell me my hero where you going? What do I need to end my war? This anime was siiiick, with a very deep unlikely protagonist. Only bad part was the use of 3D models instead of favoring traditional animation (or as traditional as it can be done on PC, but still 2D).

Ah yes, this is a topic I am a lot of thoughts for. Anime is truly a love/hate relationship I have. Some I adore, some I cannot stand.

Overrated:

Death Note: The most overrated series I've seen. I gave up on it about 20 episodes in because of how incredibly stupid the writing was, especially with the main characters. Two perfect boys that do no wrong (L is "weird" but he still does everything else right), massive conveniences to make the characters meet and their constant one-uping of each other became tiresome so quick, because it is just one Gary-Stu outwitting another Gary-Stu again and again. This show is the epitome of Japanese cliches in this genre in my book. I will never understand it's popularity.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventures Stardust Crusaders: Speaking of good ol cliches, look no further than this. My first and currently only experience with the Jojo franchise, it makes me not want to see anything more. While season one has some good moments, overall the series is a mountain of immaturity and low brow humor that took me by complete surprise. Every character is of course some archetype that does the same thing over and over. Jotaro is always emo and edgy, Joseph is always stupid and saying random things in English (because that's...funny I guess?) and of course the French guy wants all the sex. Creativity was left on the drawing board I suppose. Then it peaks with insanely stupid villains that are often made to look like idiots and most make no sense. The main baddy, Dio, apparently hired a baby to fight the main characters. Amazing. There's even an absurd fakeout on a main character's death that made zero sense and destroyed what should have been a powerful. The writers set their own work on fire with their own writing. The humor is the worst offender overall. A show that is stamped with an MA rating for some pretty brutal stuff also has fart jokes and an entire episode dedicated to shallow sex jokes. Honestly, the more I've thought about it, the more I almost want to put this as my most number 1 hated in anime. I think some of the fights hold it up but not by much.

Pokemon: Simple. I love most of the games, but the anime, especially the original, is awwwwwwwful. I loved it when I was young, but holy balls is it stupid. It truly is a sight to behold nowadays just how bad it all is. I will always appreciate the designs it introduced to the franchise and it set that standard, actually watching it is painful though. The more the games try to be like the show, the worse they get, because the show is bad.

DBZ: Another where I love the games, but not so much the show. I don't hate it or anything, but it isn't some masterpiece like it's current status would imply.

Underrated? Honestly, I am not sure. I am not aware of a whole lot that I've seen being extremely overlooked. Except for maybe Deadman Wonderland but that too has a following. I say it is underrated because the anime only got one season. Whyyyyyyyy. I was very much into the first season, the finale of it brought out emotion I didn't expect. The music was stellar as well. I wish so much that we could see more of it in anime form.

Too bad you picked the most generic part. Stardust crusaders shines for being another shonen on the list. We could say is the part for normies within the fans of JJBA.

Of course I come home to see a topic like this right after I just had a really good conversation with some co-workers about some great anime/manga series. ^_^

For overrated, I'd agree with One Piece, since it's not as good as it used to be, My Hero Academia, because while it is a good series, the hype for it quickly got old to me with how oversaturated we are with superhero stuff, and absolutely Sword Art Online, my all-time least favorite series, with the world and characters still being so bland despite how much the franchise has been milked already. :eww: Underrated, to me, would have to be something like The Promised Neverland. It's a brilliantly written thriller that I never really see get talked about. I also definitely agree with Mob Psycho 100, really disheartened by how much that series is in One-Punch Man's shadow despite the fact that I love One-Punch Man. :mlp_maud:

I disagree about JBA being overrated. I feel it's more underrated since not many people watch it, let alone it's not advertised  as much as other anime like MHA, AOT, Demon slayer, DBZ, and Naruto. The anime is almost old as Naruto and the manga is older than DBZ and yet it didn’t gain any popularity.  I also think Berserk is the most underrated anime/manga. It's so damn good and I can't believe people would dare to compared it with goblin slayer. (which I think it's a cheap off version of Berserk)
