anyone else getting kinda tired of discord(app)?

i really cant tell if this is an unpopular opinion or not in current day, but i really have grown to not like discord. (the app, not the mlp char. i love that discord :3)

i used to really like discord in 2017 to 2021 ish, offering more than skype or anything else did at the time, but recently it feels like 90% of the stuff discord adds now just make the experience worse and more cluttered/messy, just being an attempt to get you to buy nitro. all this stuff can also be kind of be a performance killer, especially on their new (ish... not really new anymore.) mobile app. it all feels unnecessary, especially for a chatting app. its like they dont know what to add anymore. im not trying to play a weird half video game or use a social media when i open discord, im just trying to use a chatting app so i can talk to my friends. somehow discord in its current state has managed to make me want less features for a cleaner experience :unsuresweetie:

im also not super big on the sort of culture surrounding alot of discord servers, which makes it impossible to actually start talking if youre new there, but thats starting to get slightly off topic, so i wont post about that here x3

(also yes, i have already "just moved to a different app", ive already moved to telegram. i still have to use discord though since most my friends seem to be set on continuing to use that still. so rip ;-;)

I totally agree with that, It was perfect the way it was back in the days. The new features, UI changes and the frequent pop ups asking for you to buy nitro... it just feel gross. But if there's one thing that annoys me from discord is the "maybe later" button. ¿when will they put in a "no, I don't want nitro and I refuse to ever buy it in my entire life, and probably the next one" button?¿could they leave me alone for 5€?

But it's free after all :moustache:

I started using Discord (again, the app, not fluttershy's friend) about two years ago, so I don't know what this "old version" was like. I use Discord because my friends and a bunch of online communities are there.

However, I will say this: Discord does ask a lot for Nitro. The advantage of desktop Discord being an ElectronJS application means that everything is written in plain CSS, so if I want to make changes I can do that (I wouldn't say that it's open source like Firefox or Linux, but you make whatever UI-related changes you want as long as you can find the right files, objects, and write a small amount of CSS). So, what I've done is I've simply removed the "gift Nitro" buttons and the "Nitro" button in your Friends list. That way, Discord only nags me for Nitro or items from the Shop once every 1.5 months or so, which isn't too bad considering that it's their only source of income and they have to advertise it.

But the Discord mobile app just sucks. As a dev, I hate it because it uses ReactJS. I also hate that it's not customizable. As a user, I just hate the UI. Everything's all over the place, and the difference between the desktop UI and mobile UI makes the two seem like completely unrelated apps.

Yes but for me that’s because almost every server I join with my interests nowadays ends up being filled with teenagers. As an adult I only want to interact with other adults and prefer environments where adults are majority. I’ve joined ones strictly for adults but they talk about boring things. Same sort of talk I’d hear at work. Or it’s a bunch of petty high school drama which is embarrassing to be taking part in at a certain age. I am still good from all the drama from the last few servers I joined that died off. It was truly a grab your popcorn and watch a bunch of grown adults be messy sort of scene. Definitely made for an entertaining read but not necessarily someplace you wanna post.

If Discord wants me to use Nitro they can pay me to use it. Otherwise I’ll pass. I’ve got enough things wanting my money rn and Nitro isn’t a necessity for me.

I've never been a big fan of Discord. I follow some Discords to keep up with feeds (like a server that shows mod updates for The Sims), but I almost never participate in conversations. That "chat room" format online has never been for me ever since I first saw it. Discord is even worse than a slow chat room because they move so fast. I feel like I'm "interrupting" anytime I post unless it's a really slow server, but if it's fast it's like you're always interrupting and that's just not in my personality.

Long live forums! The best format!

I haven't cared for Discord in a long time. I'm not super chatty, so I've never been big on servers anyway, but the promo has really only gotten worse. I only just started using it again since I've been getting into more multiplayer gaming recently and need to keep up with things. Even then, I only have it on my phone, since I really hate its interface and having it on my computer would feel like a blight on my environment.

I remember when it first started gaining traction and how shiny and cool it felt compared to Skype. It's a shame how this happens.

I've never really been able to figure Discord out. I use it for one to one chats and voice calls with some of my gamer fans. The user interface is just perplexing to me.

Worse, the conversations in large servers just make no sense. I have the app on my phone and the full application on my desktop. While they're not entirely the same, for me, it's more or less the same deal. The app isn't terribly easy to use, it's gimmiky and it makes me feel old. Bleh.

  • 1 month later...

I can definitely relate to this post and several of the other comments listed here.

Initially, most servers that I joined based on my interests are filled with much younger adults and sometimes teenagers. They are typically in a completely different point in their lives, so it's hard to relate or discuss common interests with them in general. Sometimes they use odd terminology that is common to their age such as: "Tspmo", "cheugy", "fanum tax", or "flexy mogging". To this day, I still don't know what these mean.

However, when I speak to most adults around my age, it's usually full of small talk or boring conversations that are one sided interests from them. Most adult servers are full of friend groups that have known each other for years, but it's the mainly those people discussing inside jokes or things not privy to newcomers. It's pretty much a glorified group chat that you are an audience of. I've been in servers where they gamify the friendship process with levels and ranks, but it's laughably disingenuous.

I tried hard to connect with people, but they rather discuss their one-sided interests without the opportunity to allow me to participate with them.  These conversations are similar to the small talk that you would find around a water cooler at the office or at a bus stop. They weren't meaningful conversations, so I began to be more upfront about these things to people. Some people got upset while others were mature about it and very respectful.

My assumption is that since most of us are around 30 and older in the adult servers, we pretty much have multiple commitments (work/family/love/hobbies) and are more focused on those things and are "settled down" in a sense. I noticed in almost every conversation I had with other adults, there is always no time for new interests. It's kind of disappointing to hear.

One constant theme that I came across was high school level drama especially in the adult servers. Some adults cannot take genuine criticism and take things way too personally if you call someone out on their actions. What I found sad were servers where people would have to walk on eggshells for an administrator or owner of a server that legitimately seemed great. It was annoying how many invites I received in the past to join "X's" server because they did not like the admin's personal views/rules and other childish pettiness. Then they would act like they were all friends back on the original server. These people claimed to be friends for years!!! We are all people with different opinions, but It was jarring to see and it's what ended up causing me to unfriend and block those people. Honestly, that is the type of discourse that makes me not want to connect with people. It's genuinely made me consider leaving Discord and even places such as the forums in the past as I already have enough things to deal with in my personal life.

I wish people would communicate and clarify issues more openly. Over the course of the past few months, I have reduced my online friend group substantially as I am differentiating between acquaintances and friends. I'm planning to change it up more soon. Just because you have 50+ friends on a platform does not mean that they are your friends.

I rather have more personalized conversations with a small group of people that truly enjoy my company than be part of a large group that puts on a facade for one another.

Agreed. A lot of the customisation Discord tries to sell used to exist for *free* back in the day when IMs like MSN existed - you used to be able to have custom smileys as well as personalised text colour, message font, convo banner... now they are making people pay for far less control than that. I don't care to encourage them by ever buying Nitro. Besides, I will agree each update feels worse and worse bogged down with garbage nobody actually wants... all I want is good performance and less bugs so the IM doesn't feel frustrating to use lol?

I also just dislike the 'culture' in Discord servers - I can't put my finger on it but too frequently it feels toxic at best, 4chan gamer edgelord culture at worst, and it feels insufferable... I'm in a handful of groups but post in none of them because something just feels 'off' about them... a lot of clearly stunted/troubled people who spend way too much time in toxic groups online... and I also dislike how Discord has replaced forums so a lot of stuff you'd be able to find on Google is now behind servers you don't even know the existence of. :\

My biggest problem with Discord is how so much stuff is moving to it. Got a problem, you're told to go to their Discord and ask there. Which makes it harder for discovering solutions when the next person has an issue. Since it's not indexed by an search engines (and let's not get started on the whole enshittification of those with the flood of AI misinformation), and Discord's search function is painful to use. I also find big Discord servers hard to actually engage with. They're great for my 5 or 6 person roleplaying group to mess around in between game sessions, but are just unwieldy with dozens of people.

Plus, with the Discord IPO coming, I'm pretty sure they're going to slowly degrade the experience. Feels like there's nothing like the quest for endless profit those create for ruining things that I once enjoyed.
