gaming C/D: Console games could take a few lessons from flash games

I love my console games very much but flash games tend to have this...style to them that makes them so very unique. You remember when games were almost all unique and even clones of games were unique in some way to the point it didn't seem like there was anything being anything like another game?

Flash games are like that. They are highly original in many cases, particularly puzzle platformers in my experience. I think either flash games need to be funded to be better or console games need to learn a few things from flash games about creativity while still using the same ol', same ol'

I don't even know how to get ahold of them. I don't have a 360 where I know a lot of them are at but I dunno if the PS3 has any and I have no PC to play games on. Flash is the most I can do because they are browser-based.

How do you tell the difference between Indie and non-Indie games? I've never known what the difference actually was except that Indie games aren't as high budget as say...Capcom games.

I have to agree with you here as well, a lot of video games are becoming monotonous. Particularly in the FPS genre.

I believe I also know why flash games are more original as well.

It's because with console games publishers are more concerned with making money, and so they have developers try and emulate whatever is currently selling well. And so begins a vicious cycle wherein gameplay elements and designs are repeatedly used with only minor alterations.

Flash game developers are indie, so they don't have to conform to publishers whims. Hence why they make more original works, because they want to and no one is there to boss them around.

An independent developer is not backed by a publisher. This often results in more creative games.

Surprisingly enough, the Wii has incredible indie support through the Wii Shop Channel, and it's the same with the 3DS and DSi. On all three platforms it is very easy to get some pretty good indie games.

I never look much at the Wii Shop Channel cuz I don't have an SD card to put anything on. It seems there's been indie games all over the place, I just never looked much. :P

Love your avatar btw

If your looking for some indie games I recommend playing Cave Story. Amazing game, and it's freely available. :D

Oh I've already played Cave Story. I never got the true ending though (final boss was hard enough and I know the Sanctuary is even harder, I Wanna Be The Guy level stuff lol)

Thanks! I love this avi.

Anyway, yeah the SD thing is kind of annoying, but what can you do? I just took the SD card out of an old camera. :P

I have that too, though I haven't beaten it yet.

I recommend that you play it through.

And I can't think of any other game you probably don't know about. http://mlpforums.com/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.png

I have to admit that I agree that a lot of the "unique" things about flash games are in a lot of indie games in general.

In the topic of the off-topic indie game reccomendations, the Humble Bundles have good games (although there isn't one going on right now), and they've had a lot of the staples like Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV (which was originally made in flash), Braid and Limbo (I have a bit of a platformer bias).

Some free ones are out there too, like the already mentioned Cave Story, Spelunky, An Untitled Story, and Tower of Heaven(Not very good IMO, but other people disagree).

Much like the games from yore, it's the technical limitations which drive the developer to think intuitively when designing those games. Outside of Indie games It has become unusual in the business to see those types of games, which is a shame really. Gotta try this...
