Octavia's Hall Critics

As an aside, it would be fair to assume that those who have sent in an application but not received any word was rejected, correct? At least for the majority of people ... and not including the few applicants you have to shift through still.

Nope!

We only asked a few people for follow-ups. Once we finalize things we'll start sending some PMs out to those that we've decided to bring in. :)

Oh, understood! I completely misread your post, my mistake.

Difference between follow-up and finalization ... silly me.

Anyways, very excited to see this project up and running. However it works out, it should give some much needed aid to artists of various genres and mediums.

I really hope I get in...

I wonder how this will work out.

Zoop, how many people will be on the critic team?

So I can just assume I've been rejected because I don't spend enough time in the Hall? And as MM stated, how many on the team? Will it be concrete? Also, I've just realized, would it really even matter? People will critique if they're official or not, it's just that the "official" critics HAVE to do it.

It's like once you make a hobby a job, it's no longer fun. People critiqued because they like doing it, and with this, it might bring in people that don't like doing it, which will lead to shoddy reviews. I try to give good reviews and so does everyone else, but if you make it mandatory then it will just be a chore, which for even people that LIKE doing it would only do it for so much time before getting tired of it.

I look back, and I question my judgement. I will not cancel my application, but I realize this can't be the best way to encourage people to review.

Except nobody was doing it at all when the announcement was made and applications opened. That's why the whole thing was started in the first place. :V

I'm uncertain, to be honest.

So is this just another one of your moderating team facades to trick us with the forbidden fruits of being official? Because there were people reviewing. Of course, it was always the same people reviewing, and thus people felt after one or two reviews on a piece was enough. People also only critiqued works that inspired them to write a review, so partial blame falls on the artists as well, because we're gonna blame everyone but ourselves, right?

Am I using enough commas?

Obviously we've all waited a silly amount of time. I'm might have mentioned this before, but would we get a messages telling us we were denied?

Dear fellow ponies of the forums. Heed our call! We have noticed a slight trend going around the halls of Octavia. A trend in which critique seeking artists have gone empty handed in their quest for contructive comments. The problem is not the fact that some ponies do not wish to praise; it's the fact that advice and tips are often nonexistent inside the comments following a posting of art. Sometimes, artists value some of that harsh negativity or simply want to see the end result through another's eyes.

So what we are proposing is a dedicated team of members who wish to lend helping hoof to those hoping to seek a proper critique of their art. To provide a positive, and well thought out, response in the discussions within Octavia's Hall. All we ask of you is to be able to provide positive criticism to pieces of art posted. Encourage our artists to make things better. We would very much appreciate members who wish to dedicate themselves to help make our forums even better.

But that doesn't mean the other members should hold back on creating critiques, but these members who are approved are to provide quality critiques as well as encouraging members to make lengthier posts, with more quality than we have seen in the recent past.

So who is with me? Who thinks they have the ability to provide quality critiques and help supply positive and supportive criticism on each piece of art posted on the forums?

If you feel that you are qualified, please apply today at the following link:

Is it possible that g guide could be made so people like myself could learn to to properly structure there comment,s on art?

I rarely comment on art from not wanting to seem very harsh on artists from improperly critiqueing there work

Aye, matey. Here be yar guide: Common sense. Be as gentle as you would any other, yet speak yar mind, or they shan't get better.

Everyone has a style of critique. The only way to learn would be experience, though reading other member's reviews are a good place to start. Don't just say it's bad, look at it and see what's amateurish. What's good about? Proportions and shading are common subjects. Inspiration, programs used; pose and background not so much.

Yar, look up matey. I done blundered and mine PS3 ain't been none too kind 'bout it! Please excuse this here mistake of your's truly as I waltz by this here lousy limit.

Yes.

I was waiting until the 16th (2 month anniversary of this thread's creation) to be an annoyance again.

If I remember correctly, we got "eventually, maybe" as the answer ... in summation.

Seeing as how Swoop is the only on-hand Admin at the moment, I've been giving them a bit of slack in terms of me being annoying. ^_^

Criticism cannot be based on elective method, this will set the baseline of critique, and that critique will be bland.

If there is no input to be given, it should not be forced or tried to be forced in to existence.

Criticism should never be rewarded, noted, but not rewarded.

By this, you set standards on art by a very limited target group set by very limited standards.

You dedicate a team to this, and the quality of critique will drop.

And critique is quality, even more so than the art.

If it did not happen before, it was not done because people chose to do so. (or, rather, choose not to do so.)

Do this, and you will have the same "chosen" members running around copy-pasting their "critique" to every thread that pops up because it is their "job" to do so.

Who sets the standards to the selection of this team, will set the standards for art in this forum.

Art does not have standards and there are only personal viewpoints on it.

Technical aspects of the pieces of art are subjective as well and this is enforcing hard set of limits on subjective content.

Enforced bias on subjective content is de-constructive in a environment that is supposed to be based on free sharing of information.

Nevermind the fact that people applying for this will apply based on bragging rights more than on any real merit.

Your pool of possible draftees is biased from the get-go.

Might wanna re-think this, honestly.

I feel the same way. You should only critique if it is something you wish to critique. Otherwise its just a waste of valuable time. Not saying art isnt worth critiquing but everyone has different styles that they like.

See, I'm Greed. I want everything you can think of. Money and women, power and SEX. I want everything this world's selling! and immortality's topping the list!

I've applied! : D

I'd really love to do this! I love music and I help my friends make their own visual arts all the time, though I'm better at musical arts than I am visual arts....but anyway, I hope you'll accept me!

Will this also apply to fanfics? One thing I have noticed is practically nobody gives comments on most of them (really I wonder if there should be an official place for such things -- IE you have your story thread and a comments thread -- this would keep the fanfics together as opposed to having comments interspaced with the stories). I mean yes you get to see the number of views go up over time but you don't know if anyone actually even enjoys your creation. At the very least maybe there should be a note in all of octavias areas(Art and Fanfics) that if you enjoy a story or artwork, brohoof it to encourage the artists/authors.

Of course it would include fanfics. Octavia's Hall is the entire art section, which consists of more than just graphical art.

Also, don't expect this project to be completed any time soon ... it's been over two months since the thread was posted, and about a month since we've heard anything.

Quite the contrary, actually :P

I asked Swoop about this in a private message, and he said that it's basically nearing completion, and they just have a few entries to review.

Plus, the thing has been buried beneath all these other projects, so it's no surprise the time that it's been taking.

That's exactly the same response we got literally a month ago.

Although yes, they've been busy with other things.

MEANWHILE, DJENTY HAS BEEN PATIENTLY WAITING.

There's other things to do on this forum. I can wait for this a bit, if required.

It's not like the site has made any improvements since then... :s

Geh...I'll re-apply in the morning.

I typed up everything and made it all spiffy then clicked "preview" to check for spelling mistakes..then the webpage told me I don't have permission to view applications.

I hit back and everything I typed was gone..I don't have the heart to retype it right now, I'm tired. xD

I'll do it again in the morning. :P

Your application was saved. Due to limitations of our backend software, we have no way of giving you anything better than the "You don't have permission to view applications." screen, unfortunately. It would give you a different error if the application wasn't saved.

I realize there has been a very long wait for this program to be implemented. It has, to be honest, been put off on the staff backburner in favour of more pressing tasks (like the new warning system, changes to the internal structure of the team, training new staff, and a slew of other things); but the end is in sight. There isn't anything more to comment on until the program is launched in its final form, so I'm going to lock this thread for now until we have something to announce.
