I have this feeling that they got ideas for CHRONICLE, from AKIRA. It occured to me in the big battle scene. Flight, ability to move things, protection with invisible barriers, and the ability to use Force Grip, and Force Push. Think about it alot of things are derived from AKIRA.

At worst it's probably just an homage to Akira. Seriously, If I didn't knew better I'd say you were describing "The Force" from Star Wars but I know better than that. Can't really have too many original ideas in Hollywood nowadays.

To be 100% honest, the names "Force Grip" and "Force Push." Are the only way for me to describe them.
