gaming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Looks like Super Smash Bros. has a new challenger from Sony, and that's PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Although it may not be a crowd pleaser, mainly because you have to defeat your opponents by using your special moves instead of knocking opponents out of the arena (which is a dissapointment), the game does have a handful of characters for us to battle with. Also, the game will also have cross-platform play between PS3 and the Vita, although it's not confirmed as of yet whether the game will have a storyline to it, or if there will be challenges, just like from the SSB series. Here are the confirmed characters that will be in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale so far:

  • Big Daddy (Bioshock)
  • Colonel Radec (Killzone)
  • Kratos (God of War)
  • PaRappa (PaRappa the Rapper)
  • Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal)
  • Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper)
  • Fat Princess (Fat Princess)
  • Heihachi Mishima (Tekken)
  • Toro Inoue (Together Anywhere!)
  • Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
  • Jak and Daxter (Jak and Daxter)
  • Cole MacGrath (inFAMOUS)
More characters will be announced when Sony offers up more characters. What does Sony have more tricks up on their sleeves? We'll find out soon enough, don't you think? Here's the trailer of it:

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7g4KSm7qqQ&feature=relmfu

The game will be released on October 23 in North America, October 24 in Europe, October 25 in Australia and New Zealand and October 26 in UK and Ireland. So far, there are no release dates for this game in Japan.

Could always add a bit more of Legend Of Dragoon while were at it and Daxter, let's not forget about that one. Yeah, can't wait to see how they handle this game, character wise.

I've gotta be honest I think this game looks terrible. I had high hopes for it at one point but the entire thing has come off as just unoriginal, uninspired, and feels like its being made for no other reason than to cash in on the success of Super Smash Bros.

I mean the entire concept of using special attacks in order to kill opponents is simply awful, it's like they figured it would be too close to smash bros if they knocked each other off the stage and they couldn't think of anything better. Now it's basically smash bros where players are forced to play with the final smash always on.

Not to mention they simply don't have a powerful enough cast of characters to even support the game with. I mean fat princess? lol?

Anyway, if I'm not comparing it to super smash bros, it could be fun... Maybe... Who knows? If they add Jak and Daxter, Sora, or Ratchet and Clank I'd probably be more inclined to buy it but the combat system really disappoints me.

Presumably, there are going to be other modes for battling. Also, I'd be really surprised if Jak or Daxter, Sora, Racket and/or Clank do not make it into the game.

That said, I'm also not too excited for this one yet. We'll see as more announcements follow, and once it is actually released.

I'd be surprised if ratchet and clank / jak and daxter weren't in it, but I believe Sora is owned by Disney and not Square Enix so I have my doubts about him.

I'd actually much rather see Sora in the next Smash Bros game, and while it's probably just as unlikely to see him in that game, seeing Bowser in that new Disney movie coming out (Wreck it Ralph I think?) makes me think maybe Disney and Nintendo will have more of a partnership in the coming years.

Might just be wishful thinking though.

As for other modes of battling... We'll see I suppose. I don't see it deriving much from the concept they have now. I mean maybe they'll add things like stock and time limits but it's not like they'll be able to add anything like being able to knock opponents off the stage.

Really, the lack of a good amount of content (modes, characters, stages, etc.) could be that the game is still in development. There's much more to come, I'm sure.

The dev has actually said that there is more ways to kill than with supers, they even wanted to prove it to a SSB loyalist who accused that very idea of being stupid. They were gonna show them at EVO (I don't really know what EVO is aside from being another convention of some sort but that's where they said they'd do it)

People keep calling it a rip-off, how it's nothing more than a cash-in but really is it so wrong to use an established formula the way they have? Not everyone wants or cares about doing everything brand spanking new and using an established formula is a good way to draw attention to your game. That's what this game is, using SSB as a template to make another game in the subgenre that SSB has created but no one else has utilized. Just because SSB is the only one who has used the formula doesn't mean they are the only ones who necessarily can use it.

Why has no one else used it so far despite it's big success as a franchise? I'd take a guess and say it's because of these very accusations people are afraid of: That their game is nothing more than a rip-off or cash-in. Why does it have to be a cash-in just because it's using the same formula? Could it not be an expansion on the subgenre that sorely needs to be explored? Sure enough game companies have done things like Marvel vs Capcom or Street Fighter x Tekken to mix and match series' but none of them have done what SSB has done: A platforming, party fighter.

I'd also venture a guess and say when one thinks "fighting game" many don't even consider SSB to be a true fighting game series because it's formula is so different from your traditional fighting game.

Let's all take this into consideration: People have WANTED a Sony version of Super Smash Bros for many years, people have wanted to see all the Sony franchises put together in a free-for-all battle just like SSB. Now that they are finally getting it it's "uninspired" or "nothing more than a cash-in"? The gaming community is extremely hypocritical.

What's more is we haven't even seen everything in the game, we only know half the roster so who's to say they won't have at least 20 different stages, a bunch of battle modes and maybe even a story-mode ala Subspace Emissary?

Let's not get our hopes up but let's also not assume that what we've seen so far has been all there is to it. People are writing the game off before it's even released which is a big no-no for gamers imo, they should never do that. There are a lot of games, and you should all know this very well, that are completely different experiences between watching and playing even if when watching you are given a full run-down of how the game plays. What we saw at E3 was an enclosed stage with no pitfalls, that in no way constitutes that there is only death through supers. I don't know what else has been shown, I admit, but considering what the PSAS devs have said about that not being the case I'm more willing to trust them on that than all the speculation that Supers are the only way to kill. Maybe in an enclosed environment like that God of War stage which has hazardous backgrounds which are equally capable of killing you and your opponents.

I don't think people are giving Sony enough credit simply calling the game a cash-in. While it's probably true they are trying to draw some of SSB's crowd that doesn't mean this game isn't meant to stand on it's own.

A lot of meaningful text

Very well said. I think there's potential for a very successful franchise out of PS All Stars.

Besides, I'm an all around gamer myself, I love Nintendo as much as I love Sony. And I'm perfectly okay with this new game that Sony's developing.

They better have the X2010 from Gran Turismo. ;) Or at the very least, a course that takes the form of a track in GT :D

<- major racing fan.

Same. I am not loyal or disloyal to any company, developer or publisher. I'm in it for the games and PSAS looks like it could open a floodgate. First Nintendo made it, Sony tried to expand on it, now maybe other companies with multiple franchises will give it a shot, Square Enix has a pretty good repertoire of series' under it's belt that it could do, for example. Konami has quite a few too.

SSB is more than just a unique franchise, it essentially created a subgenre to fighting games and more companies need to explore said subgenre.

I'm not surprised Cole is in it, I sincerely hope they have old Cole as a skin or costume though. I haven't played Infamous 2 but I like old Cole's design more than the new one. (I never hated the changed design btw, just prefer old Cole)

Here here, your speaking to a major racing fan as well! ^^ Though, while I'd love as many appearances via cameo of Gran Turismo in this game, I'm not sure how it could really be possible. Unless they can maybe have Gran Turismo combine with another franchise for one of the stages. It just seems hard for a racing game to make a cameo in a game like All Stars or SSB. F-Zero is an exception because it is future it's, therefore, a random platform traversing throughout the track will seem normal.

They will probsbly have something like the trophy system in SSB, I'm sure the X2010 will be one of them.

Oh, yes. Two very worthy challengers. Especially Jak. It's good that they're still paying attention to their somewhat-forgotten series.

Added two more confirmed characters for the upcoming game. And yes, it's highly likely that the X2010 would be as a trophy (since vehicles can't perform hand-to-hand combats lol), and I think that Gran Turismo should have a mash-up either with MotorStorm or Wipeout HD. You decide. ;)

Though not specifically owned by Sony, as far as I know, I think it would be awesome if they had a Wild Arms character in the game. Wild Arms has been Sony exclusive for a while and not totally forgotten (though mostly)

There has been figurine releases recently for Wild Arms 2 and there's still no word, negative or positive, of Wild Arms 6 either. Last we knew it was announced but were given nothing on it and it hasn't been mentioned since.

Hm...maybe it should be two different genres like the other stages- it makes them more interesting.

Like now LittleBigPlanet (platformer) was paired with Buzz! (game show), and how Patapon (music) was paired with God of War (DEFINITELY not music. lol).

It's possible. The roster is compeltely open to any third partiers who are willing to have their characters in the game.

Speaking of which, that means there's all and any chance that Spyro and Crash will be in it, which I'm sure the whole PS fanbase, including me, would love.

How about Gran Turismo with Ape Escape? Also, I would be really surprised if Spyro and Crash don't both make it in.

If I'm correct, two franchises seem to take on two different roles on every stage, one is the setting, characters, etc., and the other is the stage hazard. If that were to happen, I'm sure that combination would work out perfectly, GT could be the setting (one of the tracks in the game), and Ape Escape could be the hazard (maybe one of the antagonistic enemies or villains).

Anyways, I'm wondering about the inclusion of anything Gran Turismo. It's a racing franchise that always includes numerous real-life branded vehicles, and that might make it difficult onto put in a game like this, because that's just are edgy and iffy those kinds of companies can be about that kind of publicity. So, I'm not sure, we will just have to find out. If anything, we might just get cars, but without the manufacturer properties, logos, etc.

I feel like Sony would have rights for the non-real cars that they designed in collaboration with other companies though? Like the Citerion GT and the X2010? Or perhaps the Formula GT :P

You mean Citroën? If so, that probably would not be there because Citroën is a real-world French automobile manufacturer. The X2010 is a possibility if RedBull is okay with it, which is likely. And definitely the Formula Gran Turismo, it's 100% original.

Citroen GT was designed in collaboration between Citroen and Polyphony Digital.

Yeah, I guess Citroën either would want to get rid of their logos on the car and take their name off it or whatever.

Then again, they could always have it at all the companies being okay with being in the game.

I'm not too excited about the game, but that's completely because of the character line-up. From the day this game was announced, I was hoping for Kingdom Hearts and/or Monster hunter to be thrown in the mix, simply because those games are really big titles. I know both could be considered "obscure" in the Sony line-up, but it's mostly those games that caused me to buy some of the Playstation platforms.

I will buy the game regardless, just to see how it plays, but I can't say I'll be eager to play it.
