MachineGunLola 408 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 Okay. This is probably in the wrong place.. But I'm going to have a job soon. I'll be saving up to get a laptop, and I'm wondering what kind of laptop I should get? Like, brand (dell, apple, mac, ect) , and what series (inspiron 1501, ect). I need a laptop that works well, can play online games and games such as the Sims 3, and possibly even has a built in webcam. I've also seen those laptops where you can write on the screen, are those good? D: My current laptop is old and, frankly, shitty. It's a Dell Insiprion 1501.... ;-; I bought it for $50 though, so eh. Nightfall 3,950 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 Well, first off, you need to consider how much RAM you will be using at once, and how big the initial hard drive should be. I say initial because you can always buy an external hard drive. And the second type of laptop is actually a type of tablet. The iPad (like the one I'm writing this on) is one type, and that "laptop" is another. Again, same deal with the RAM and hard drive.
Random User 249 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 If you want a gaming laptop, then I certainly suggest you do not get a Mac. Alienware is really expensive, but tends to be the best choice for gaming.
Cadence Sparkle 102 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 Gaming? NO MAC'S! That's for sure! But, if your not getting alienware I reccomend PC. And HP all the HP computers iv'e had lasted for awhile. Dell (aka the one you have now) is usually really standard it's like wearing a school uniform. The OS has to be windows 7 (or at least vista) 1 Sunshine, Sunshine ladybugs awake, clap your hooves and do a little shake! - Princess Cadence and Twilight Sparkle
tanoshii 131 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 (edited) Asus are a good brand that shouldn't be overlooked either. Alternatively, Dell laptops are fine, I actually had the same as you (the 1501) for years before I upgraded to a Dell 15R. Ol' Sarge 885 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 (edited) As much as I hate to say it. Don't get a Mac, and that is really because of the gaming thing. I have owned the same Mac for almost 6 years now and all I have done is by some memory. But Macs are really not designed for gaming. I would go with Alienware. A Blithering Div 247 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 Stay far away from anything that uses or openly advertises Intel HD graphics. They have gotten better but Intel integrated is still rubbish for gaming. Look for nVIDIA or AMD Raedon in the description as either will provide a better gaming experience. 1 I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?
rainbovv dash 110 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 First off. Getting a laptop for gaming is like getting a Prius for racing. It does the job but... it's far from being designed for that job. If you just want it for gaming, my advice would be to forget about a laptop. Now, if you're a casual gamer and aren't planning on running HD stuff and things it'll work for you. Recommending you a specific brand / model is difficult. I tend to go to a store (something were the machines are on display, like Mediamarkt or stuff) right before they're closing and check how hot the laptops are. If the box isn't hot, it has a good display and keyboard and the stats and price are what I want I'll get that one. Works for me... I know it sounds random. But experience has proven me right, my last laptop is 4 years old, has a Celeron CPU, didn't ruin me, and works like a charm... My brother's got a HP at the same time that was twice as expensive, had a dual core, shuts down because of overheating and the screen and keyboard are broken. //Works like buying you some shirt. If you test and like it, you get it. 1 My main OC: Storm Cloud
MachineGunLola 408 July 19, 2012 Author Share July 19, 2012 Holy Hell! Alienware is expensive... They have gaming laptops, which would be great. But they start at over 1,000 dollars! Jesus, that would be a whole month's worth of work and then some more, just to get the one computer. o3o;; But, if they're good- as everyone says they are, I suppose they'll be worth it... They ARE good, right? BANG! BANG! BANG!
Key Gear 6,663 July 19, 2012 Share July 19, 2012 Okay. This is probably in the wrong place.. Hello Lola, I've moved your thread to general discussion. Since you are asking about a laptop, it fits much better in this category. Also, you're likely to get more responses as well. They ARE good, right? They are very good! I know that it's expensive, but, think about it, if you buy a Alienware laptop, it will last you for a very long time. Even 5 years into the future, you will probably still be able to play the latest games. So, you pay a lot of money up front, but you will have a great system for quite a few years afterwards.
Bohtty 1,775 July 20, 2012 Share July 20, 2012 (edited) Are you sure you need a laptop? Desktops are generally the way to go for gaming... It would probably be cheaper and more powerful for the same amount as an Alienware to build your own... But, if they're good- as everyone says they are, I suppose they'll be worth it... They ARE good, right? Well they are better than the average laptop, but your still paying for lights. Computers advance really quickly and upgrade on laptops is often very very restrictive which means your 1000$ christmas tree will be outdated with in a year or 2 :\ Edited July 20, 2012 by Bohtty 2 Legit signature made by Shift.
