  1. A Blithering Div

    mega thread Feminist Club!

I've read this entire thread. Can't say my mind has changed much. The only exposure to "feminism" was my mother and it is questionable at best. I'm not anti-feminism (literally can't be as an egalitarian) however I do question its validity and I'm hoping your answers to the following will help me see the light so to speak. I'm not here to inflame or start a riot. I'm looking for answers. Draft. Yes it gets brought up a lot (for a good reason) but barring the whole backlog, do you think women should have to sign up for it at 18 like men? This one does require back story and it hits close to home. A few years after I was born, the household consisted of me, my mother, my step father and my step brother on the weekends. My step dad had an ex and of course the custody battle went to her favor. I phrase it like such because even after it was shown that her boyfriend at the time was physically abusing my step brother, his two sons of his own and threatened his mother with a knife, she still had custody. They stayed together a little while after that as well. She spent the child support money on herself and to this day hasn't been much of a motherly figure. Since this thread defines feminism as equality for both sexes, why is the law written in such a way to give the mother favoritism over the father despite being arguably unfit and in some cases straight up unfit? Keep in mind the laws were written to avoid dead beat fathers. Sorry if this is out of place but I would like answers from approachable people.
  2. Transistor - The complete lack of a draw in within the first hour killed it. Crysis - A stereotypical shooter that crutches on graphics and the suit. Most rogue likes because I prefer victory to be based on skill and not a good RNG roll.
  3. On the PB and naner sandwich: Throw some bacon on it. What I like although I haven't made since that one time was chicken breasts cut into tenders, "breaded" with flour, cinnamon and pureed peanut. Deep fried and coated with powdered sugar to taste. Not that odd but noms were had.
  4. College is on summer break so my day is: 12PM: Get up 1PM: Consume food and internet for an hour 2PM: Shower 2:25-2:30PM: Go to work & bring grandmother to work 3:00-11PM: Piss away some brain cells under florescent tubes in a naff effort to no longer piss away brain cells under florescent tubes 11:20PM get home and eat something 12AM: game/internet more. 3AM: See if there is anything new here 4AM: Sleep Rinse repeat. On my days off: 12PM: Get up 1PM: Consume food and internet for a bit 1:30PM Game, keep reading that article that turned into 7 different tangents or attempt to do something with my arduino 5PM: Eat again 6PM: Carry on with said game/article/arduino 9PM: Return to bedroom if not there already and proceed to game with a friend or two 11PM: Shove more foodstuffs into my face hole. 3AM: Internet a bit 4AM: Sleep I didn't mind overnights. At least things were open when I got out and I got that sweet bugger all night shift diff to boot.
  5. I hate driving on the road. I would love a track day car though. Nothing special. An old manual tranny beater car or something like a mark 1 GTI would be nice. I'm not in the financial position to do so now but maybe someday I'll be able to.
  6. I know a little pBASIC and some C/C++. pBASIC for the BASIC Stamp which I don't care for because A. Its a derivative of BASIC (I've tried QBASIC... bad times) and a BASIC Stamp 2 costs like $50 for the uC chip alone. The C/C++ comes from the Arduino platform. It's not pure C/C++, but I'm liking it thus far. I don't know too much of it but can at least do if/else, for and while loops and typically avoid globals. Nice to know I may get some assistance when I inevitably invoke the Halt and Catch Fire instruction.
  7. A. Yes, I'm aware of that. However I've yet to be "forced" to use different combos as its literally impossible this early in the game. B. Other games do that to by making the enemies harder (more health, more of them, more damaging and sometimes smarter) and limiting the overall health in the field. They still allowed a well timed heal. See Bastion for a good example. C. There's nothing in the story thus far that is compelling me to care. Why do I care about these people exactly? Why should I care about Red or the Transistor? What I've gathered from it has been stated above and there isn't enough there to keep me going forward. In fact, early on I "could've" left the city but went back for a reason that hasn't been explained.
  8. Must be good right? The visuals and overall aesthetic are fantastic: If there is one thing Supergiant should be known for, it is their art department. It's vibrant, colorful and most importantly atmospheric. The soundtrack is alright. It's up on soundcloud somewhere should you wish to here it. The game begins with Red (you) pulling that sword known as Transistor out of some dead guy. You've had your voice stolen but still make vocal noises so I assume its a metaphorical voice. This is one of the few remnants of Bastion that seeped through to this game in that the story is intentionally made vague in order to make it seem deeper than it is. You have various skills called "Functions()" that can either be one of the four active skills, an augment to one of those skills or a passive buff. You have a set amount of "memory" so you can't just mix 'n' match. You fight an enemy force called "The Process" because...alright this game is rubbish. 72 minutes in and I cannot bring myself to play any more of it. One of the reasons being is the shitty combat system. You have a health bar but you can't heal unless you have the life regen function (which works more like the mourneblade from Castlevaina: Symphony of the Night, a much better game). When you "die" you either overload transistor which from what I can work out, doesn't do much or you lose an attack. Pressing space allows you to "plan" your attacks within a given time frame. Sounds like a good idea until you do that and can't attack anything until that ability cools down. Once you lose a function, you have to go to two access points (upgrade stations/save points similar to those found in Dino Crisis 2 and Devil May Cry, both being better games) to get the lost functions back. Because this game is kind of "hack and slashy" this is a major problem. The other is the story. 72 minutes in and I know Red is a singer that was supposed to do a concert (I think) but couldn't because that's when the calamity "it" happened. I don't know why the process is there. The process wants me dead because vagueness and the reason I should care about any of it is beyond my simpleton brain. Let's address the elephant in the room. Yes, this game was made by the same people who made Bastion. Bastion is one of my all time favorite games. I didn't expect this game to be like Bastion at all. While it does share some things, it isn't the same. However it probably should have been because outside of the visuals, Bastion did everything better. Better combat, better storytelling, better story in general, characters that were given life and a better sound track. 3/10 do not recommend
  9. I've been playing starcraft 1 with a friend. To think I used to be decent at RTS games...
  10. In the future, we've annihilated ourselves. There are no more structures, no roads and our remains have been fossilized. In a distant land, some ETs spot our solar system and decide to settle here as well. The only obvious remnants would be our probes, landers and satellites. How do you think they would put the pieces together? Would they discover our bodily remains? Perhaps a genetic based resurrection? In other words, how do you think ET would react to our space objects without a visible trace of us left? I personally think if ET were to visit a post apocalyptic solar system. They would see the primitive technology and try to trace it back. Given the number of satellites around earth, they may even land here and attempt to find the beings responsible. It is possible they could just brush the whole thing off but I'd like to think that an intersteller/galactic race would have far more intellectual curiosity than that.
  11. After last night, I can write off Conquering Dystopia. No real jamming to be had. They were just loud.

  12. Oh the sempron OC is gonna be a rusty's garage special. There won't be a return point and I wouldn't be surprised if fire occurred. Cheap CPU, stock cooler, cheap mobo and lower shelf PSU running on a bit of cardboard as the desk has a metallic finish. The Athlon works great. I just need to see how well it will handle games. I know it handles Pandora with some distributed computing hammering on it with no issue and that's about as demanding I am from it. I also haven't seen the temp rise above room temp with the stock cooler. That said the IGP is kind of weak even in OpenCL tasks so we'll see how it handles LoL along with Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.
  13. Maybe. Glofo's 28nm has had its fair share of issues, however the CPU package as in the PCB, IHS, etc, is smaller than a standard CPU package and they probably do a good bit of die harvesting to keep costs even lower. Sempron used to be AMD's equivalent to a celeron. This was back when the Athlons were top dog and someone decided they didn't like "Duron" as a name. I do have the 145 though. I may have to fire it up and OC the fuzz out of it.
  14. I like that it can now be done with low power components that aren't hard to find while still having plenty of umph to actually run more than a web browser.
  15. Sure can. Won't have time until Wednesday but I will do it then.
  16. Yeah, the Athlon is a decent chip. Much better than the Celeron 847 it replaced. Does everything I ask of it with relative ease though I still need to test a few games on it. It cost me $136.45 for the CPU, mottherboard and RAM. The other bits and bobs I had kickin' around from the previous board. If there are any games/apps you want me to test, let me know. I got some time to do so coming up.
  17. I've posted here before but some time has passed and parts have changed and more rigs have been acquired. My laptop is an Acer. Model: Why did I buy this again? Intel Core i3 3xxx 1.8 GHz HD 4000 IGP 8 GB of 1600MHz RAM 120 GB ADATA SSD Linux Mint 15 This laptop has a very peculiar issue of draining battery when not on. I may replace it with a high end mobile Kaveri rig for dat IGP. My Secondary PC is custom AMD Athlon 5350 APU: "Quad Core" kabini chip. Low power, more power hungry than an Atom chip but much faster than bay trail especially the IGP. Will be replaced with Beema should it hit AM1 Radeon 8400 IGP 4 GB of 1866 RAM 9-10-9-28: No dual channel IMC on kabini MSI AM1i motherboard: Nice little mini-itx board ADATA 32 GB SSD Antec Earthwatts 80+ bronze 300 watt PSU All put into a Coolermaster Elite 110 case with awesome (see non-existent) cable management Windows 7 as Linux Mint 15 didn't like kabini. At all. And lastly my tower 4.0 Intel i7 4770K at stock settings ASUS Z87-PRO: Haven't really figured out the UEFI which is why the CPU is at stock settings Corsair H80i cooler as my i7 runs just a tad hot 16 Gigs of 1866 RAM 9-10-9-28 for the few times I RAMDisk EVGA GTX 770 at stock settings 64 GB Crucial M4 SSD 1 TB Western Digital Black and the ol' 500 GB Seagate Barracuda makes a return along with the 650 watt Seasonic 80+ gold modular PSU Still got the cup holder and cig lighter All still stuffed into a Coolermaster Storm Scout v1 runs Windows 8 because I mistakenly paid for it for reasons I still can't comprehend
  18. Relevant: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/6014-Xbox-360-and-PS3-Are-Just-Very-Crap-PCs This holds true for the new consoles as well. So given the choice between console and PC some choose PC and as GTA 5 was written on a PC, why not port to PC? Personally I don't care because GTA has been meh since 4 and my sandbox needs have been filled with Just Cause 2 mp mod and Saints Row.
  19. Occasionally. Usually in Payday 2 when a shotgun blast comes from seemingly nowhere. I also learned to stop playing rogue likes. Any game that is dependent on my CPU having it's morning cup of coffee rather than skill is not a game but a piece of non-monetary gambling software similar to that of a slot machine.
  20. Skyrim. I don't typically play RPGs at all, but a summer sale appeared and now the only reason I don't play it is because its a massive time sink and I still have a few weeks of classes. Perhaps the game that most fits this thread for me is Bastion. I heard a lot of good things about it but it didn't really interest me. Then I played it and loved it since. It's easily one of my all time favorites.
  21. Nokia is now a Microsoft shop. Mur...

  22. Moderation goes a long way. Act how you want to be treated, but don't be a doormat. Keep your word. Give something back from time to time. Learn from your mistakes and more from your regrets. Mind your own business and take responsibility for your actions be them good or bad. Learn the difference between insult and criticism. Don't hate others for who they are. That's about it really.
  23. I don't consider them good. It's just market fragmentation in an effort to get a market majority. The way I go about stopping such practices is not buying them. If it isn't on my platform of choice, then it isn't worth getting. Not all platforms are equal however as not all platforms have the exact same hardware.
  24. - Intel's process lead doesn't mean much - Nor does Thunderbolt - CMT is the worst decision AMD has made - The "cat" core line is AMD's last bastion of a worthwhile CPU - Mantle is a waste of effort that should have been put towards OpenGL - CUDA is another waste of effort that should be put towards OpenCL - Planar magnets are better than standard voice coils - There isn't a decent cell phone OS available in the US - GNU/Linux is not the best OS there is - The BSDs are dying because they're irrelevant
  25. George Carlin Bill Hicks Bob Saget Jim Jefferies Jim Norton Louis C.K. Bill Burr Chris Rock Patton Oswalt Ralphie May Doug Stanhope Those are the ones I can think of for now.
