  1. Wrong on the architectural level. Intel hyperthreading is the addition of registers that the CPU alternates between to boost throughput between processes. Bulldozer has all of the essential hardware for 8 cores (2 decoders, 2 integer units, 2 128 bit FPUs [that can act as one 256 bit FPU]) but only has 1 MMX unit and one FP scheduler. On topic; You may want to save up for a better GPU, outside of that it looks alright.
  2. First, the obligatory King Crimson post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mPlAr0Y62o Now for some Chimp Spanner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AP_EpjLyaHo
  3. AMD sucks, Intel sucks, ARM and various licensees suck and VIA sucks all for various reasons.
  4. Kaveri is about 30 hours away from launching as of time of writing and some people such as myself are just itching for official benchies. This is pretty much AMD's Hail Marry to stay relevant on the x86 CPU coin. I understand the shit storm that will come with that statement but I have good things to say about it I swear. I don't think Kaveri will change much on the desktop as GloFo's 28 nm process isn't able to clock as high in the same power envelope. That kinda sucks because I like my desktop rigs but oh well. However, the "upto" 20% IPC claim is appearing to hold true: Sauce. This is excellent news for their mobile lineup. This is where I see Kaveri really kicking ass should OEMs actually use the damn chips. Since mobile doesn't have to reach insane clockspeeds, Kaveri will easily outperform mobile Trinity parts. That and that alone would be enough but you also get a better iGPU and better GPGPU performance. Considering how well mobile Trinity did against the mobile i series at the time, this may very well save AMD. That said, I may pick myself up an A10 7850k for a 24/7 BOINC PC. In short, mobile Kaveri is gonna be where it's at. Addendum to address the people that will inevitably mention overclocking: According to the source above, 1.5 volts was needed to get to ~4.5GHz without the iGPU active. Better than Phenom II but christ does AMD need to get out of the WSA for GloFo. Unrelated note: If anyone wants another member for their BOINC team, send me a PM or something. I do Rosetta, Milkyway, Einstein and SETI.
  5. Many different types. I don't really have a favorite either as genre isn't something I think about all that much. The genres in my current playlist are Classical, Trance, Chiptune, Dubstep (liquid in particular), Drum & Bass, Metal: Prog, Djent if the genre snobs have finally made it a subgenre, and instrumental, whatever Primus would fall under, Glitch/Trip Hop, Jamtronica, Jazz and Jazz Fusion, and lastly Post Rock.
  6. New Years resolution lasted 9 days. NEW RECORD!

  7. The entire Modern Military Shooter subgenre. It's just all bland and uninspired rubbish. It would also be nice to see Nintendo roll out some new IP rather than the same rehashes.
  8. I imagine that it'd be like life on pause with complete and total absence of stimuli. Total darkness, a whole lot of nothing but you don't perceive any of it. The only afterlife I know of existing is the legacy you leave behind.
  9. Drop the CPU cooler and instead get this CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116906 It's essentially an i7 for $50 cheaper. Or go with the standard i5 4670 non-k. Never OC a production rig.
  10. Intel Edison aka a PC the size of an SD card. Do want.

      Raspberry Pi's been owned?

Possibly. It needs to be cheap and Intel isn't usually cheap. So either they've pulled a 180 or their 22nm fabs are very cheap now. Sauce: http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/06/intel-edison/

  11. ARM A57, AMD Kaveri and Intel Broadwell all launching this year. My inner hardware nerd is estatic.

  12. Meh. I'm older than 21 now so it doesn't matter. Nothing changes so for me its just another day. Relevant comedy bit:
  13. My resolution is to try to take off the jaded shades. Maybe something good will happen.
  14. If that were the case, then how is video signal being passed through from the iGPU to the AMD card? At any rate, go into Device Manager (Control Panel, System, Device Manager) and click Display Adapters. This will list all available adapters and any exclamation points denote driver issues. If there are driver issues, uninstall Catalyst from control panel, delete (select and press shift+delete) the AMD and ATI folders in C:\Program Files, then reinstall Catalyst 13.12. If that fails to fix it, then either the contacts are dirty or the card is on its way out, but the card should be ok as I'd assume it would have been artifacting long before not running 3D applications. If you need to clean the contacts you can use a pencil eraser.
  15. Macs suck at gaming because their graphics hardware sucks at gaming. Apple only puts "decent" cards in the pro series and I'm not sure if they do that anymore, though I'd guess they'd have to if they're still using Xeons. Back in the day there weren't many games for mac because macs used IBM's PowerPC chips. There were reasons for that and performance was one of them but that's another subject. Cut to today and now Apple has the opportunity to expand their gaming prowess and could have easily taken down Microsoft with the vista fiasco and now the Win8 ballyhoo but that would make sense for a long term strategy and I don't think today's corporate climate knows what that is anymore. In fact, I would argue that one of the major reasons Steam was ported to Linux was because Apple doesn't care about games.
  16. Not sure what you'd classify this as but its worth a mention: Edit: Just thought of one that's more on the mark:
  17. There is no watching energy unless you're referring to electromagnetic radiation. The books aren't flying around because there is no energy making them do so in the system.
  18. Is it sad that I run BOINC projects on my computer to keep my room warm?

  19. No eSATA... This backup is gonna take a while.

  20. Back when the largest drive I had was 80 gigs, I ran below 10% free. After that, I kept my old SATA drives in the tower as I get new ones. Now I have 900.2 GB free out of ~1.5 TB. Now I just need a larger SSD. Semi-related note: Never ran out of RAM before but I hammered the page file pretty hard.
  21. Well, it is. Good call on the dual channel memory as well. Most builds I see on the web use one stick of RAM and I just want to scream at them USE 2 YOU'RE WASTING HALF OF YOUR MEMORY PERFORMANCE FOR NO REASON.
  22. I said it was my opinion (IMHO)? Outside of that decent build.
  23. Antec Nine Hundred is a better case IMHO.
