Phaeston-e12 173 July 20, 2012 Share July 20, 2012 (edited) I was feedling around with my OC and Rarity's hair since I've been trying to practice drawing for consistency's sake. I drew this particular pose and thought 'huh, Rainbow Dash would look cool in that pose.' so I did it. I'm going to do some practice on horse cantering around so I can translate them into MLP things for more drawing ponies. (ponies. ponies everywhere.) The background is sort of greyish because I prefer drawing on greyish background than pure white; hurts my eye and it feels so blank that I become distracted if it's pure white. Constructive criticism is always welcomed. Edit: front hindleg seems... little bit too thin. Oh well. Edited July 20, 2012 by ein12

Phaeston-e12 173 July 20, 2012 Author Share July 20, 2012 Wow, alot of reply while I was concentrating on making some other post. Thank you very much for the encouragement; there's still a flaw in the picture as I've comment, but I just have to practice more to be more consistent and not make those mistakes. I do wish I know how to effectively do a background so my pictures are so.. empty.

It's kind of a never-ending experiment I suppose.
Pix3M 607 July 20, 2012 Share July 20, 2012 Yep. Definitely an interesting style that stands out from other works. While you're trying to be able to draw things consistently, it's a little funny that I can see potential inconsistencies from just one picture. Mind if I Point them out though? I also don't know my horse anatomy well enough to describe the exact areas I want to describe, so I may have to doodle notes on your work. 1 My deviantArt page

There's a limitation to how much you can improve just by making a self-criticism. I intended to point at anatomical inconsistencies, but I found other stuff that might be worth pointing out. As for the questionable anatomy note, I'm not sure if it's as inconsistent as I thought. The outlines area appeared to be placed too high for me. About the carelessly placed feathers, last I remember avian wings, their feathers are well organized for flight. I believe the issue with not being able to draw something consistently enough at least partially comes from not establishing minor details like the size of hooves among other things. I wanna say that more attention should be paid to anatomy despite how you're clearly disregarding show-accuracy for your own style, but I'm not sure how much effort you're giving on your part :x Edited July 20, 2012 by PixMeister 2 My deviantArt page
NavelColt 22,880 July 20, 2012 Share July 20, 2012 I like it =3 I like the sleek design you gave her, and I think you nailed the type of expression she'd have. Also like the mane placement, like it's wavy, as if she's really floating up in the air, wind blowing at her from the back. A great job overall! Hazardus_Havard. 479 July 20, 2012 Share July 20, 2012 Yep. It looks like your work, as in your style. I still must say though that the head might need a change. If I recall you wanted to do that really neat comic correct? How are you gonna handle showing off a male and female in the image? I guess you could try making male heads more blocked but that could turn out too ugly. As for the image itself. The front legs look a bit off for some strange reason, like they're misaligned to the body. Look at your hind legs and duplicate the positions of that; the only reason to change from that is for unique poses or dramatic changes in movement like sliding. There's also no color in the eyes. While they are fine as is, it would help the image if something was added to it. Practice makes perfect; but if nobody's perfect, why practice? http://hazardus-havard.deviantart.com/ Art http://www.fimfiction.net/story/70801/an-alien-walks-amongst-us Story

I wanna say that more attention should be paid to anatomy despite how you're clearly disregarding show-accuracy for your own style, but I'm not sure how much effort you're giving on your part :x Thank you, although that it has been stated that I've trying to go along with my own style; I've been trying to draw that so at least the body parts are still adherent to what's been shown on the show; I’ve just used a combination of different body styles for her case since I was trying to imagine what she would look like in her older self. I agree with what you've said about the hind-leg however, the problem stems from the fact that I was mostly focused on trying to make the fore-legs at least 3 dimensional (I was imagining that she's looking completely sideward while her body is slightly tilted toward the screen) but that wasn't translated that well to her hind-legs since I was mostly focused on trying to figure out what was going on her fore-legs; which I admit that it is little bit choppy because it's not really smooth enough. I also agree with your criticism on the wings; honestly I forgot to draw them. I finished drawing the entire body and colored it, then thought 'huh, something is missing; oh crap I forgot to draw the wings.' so I have no defense on why wings may look strange; I had only spent maybe couple minutes on it. The goal was to be able to come up with a sketch matching the description I’ve written down and finish the underdrawing within 10 minutes while giving as attention to the underlying skeleton as possible; then learn from the mistakes. Perhaps spending more time could've prevented such problems, but trying to be absolutely perfect wasn’t the goal of this study. Yep. It looks like your work, as in your style. I still must say though that the head might need a change. If I recall you wanted to do that really neat comic correct? How are you gonna handle showing off a male and female in the image? While they are fine as is, it would help the image if something was added to it. I intentionally added no color her eyes. I've came to a decision that following straight with the original style looked absolutely terrible with the style's I've been drawing. I've drawn more than 40~50 attempts to address this issue and the only time where it looked 'alright' was when the eyes were as small as what's been shown in this picture (for giving non-serious or a particular effect) or just eyes without a pupil (therefore no black dots and no shining marks) and no it's the hind-legs that's been translated poorly; her body was supposed to be tilted slightly toward the screen while her head is turned straight side-ward.
