Equestira books

So i'm doing the NaPoRiNo that is being held on EQD and books are a centeral theme to the story. Now for the most part I know what I want to do with them, but I hit a bump when I went to describe them. Because most modern day books are made with something like renforced cardboard and somekind of weave (I think, I could be wrong on that) which I didn't think would fit the Equestira setting, so I wanted to model the books after old fasion books. Which, if I am not mistaken, were covered with leather. I'd rather not have all of the books in Equestra be made from other, possibly seintiant, beings, so could someone give me a nudge and sugest what I could use instead? is there a type of old fasioned covering that don't know about (spoiler: there probably is and I'm too thick to think of what it could be) that would work in the setting? Well there seem to be quite alot leather products around Equestria, so there are some animals whose hides are acceptable to use (the animalmight not be killed for it) or they are tratded from other species (griffons might not be hesitant to have a cow).

 

Otherwise, cardboard encased in cloth is probably your best bet.

Some older/rarer tomes could be bound in more exotic materials (manticor fur, dragon skin...)
