  1. 1. Are Names and Cutie Marks Related?

    • Yes, absolutely, of course!

    • No, nope, not even a relative posibility.

    • It is possible, but I don't take to much stock in it.

Do you think there is a relationship between what a ponies' name is and what his/her cutie mark ends up being? I can think of a couple of examples where this works and a couple of examples where it does not. Rarity for example has a name that is related to the same subject as her cutie mark talent is, finding rare gem stones. Rainbow Dash has a name that almost seems to directly describe her cutie mark. There are however exceptions to this, Pinkie Pie has a name that his little to nothing to do with her cutie mark. So I ask you, is there a relationship between names and cutie marks? Answer the poll and reply to the thread with your reasoning.

they kinda for some characters like feather weight, Diamond Tiara, mr and mrs Cake, Lyra aka Heartstrings

it could be because cutie marks are kinda a reflection on the pony so it may reflect on what there talents are, but also there identity.

Well I would say its really fifty fifty, considering that when a foal is born they ussually are introduced it their parents profession. With that being said they start to develop skills in that trade and most likely move up in the family business. Applejack wants to live the life of a noble before she realizes she has a skill set developed to her life prior to her decision and works in the apple business like her brother and granny smith. On the contrary twilight has the cutie mark representing the bonds between her and her friends as well as a immense talent for magic. Her parents as far as we know have nothing in relation to this and have no trade skill that twilight could have succeeded them in. It is all at random either it be through job introduction to a absolute random occurrence.

The mind of the host will desperately try to create memories where none exist. Simple right?

Not only are Cutie marks related to names, but it seems that, at least in some cases, a pony's personality is at least somewhat connected to her name. Fluttershy, of course, is the main example for this, but I think there are others as well (Daring Do? Silver Spoon? Cheerilee?) It's a pretty strange concept if you think about it. Does your name in the MLP universe determine your personality and/or special talent?

Are you asking if my OC's name has anything to do with his talent? Or are you asking if my real name has something to do with a talent I have. Or perhaps your question was rhetorical. My OC's name, Blaze Phoenixtear does definitely have something to do with his cute mark. His cutie mark is a phoenix and his special talent is fire magic, he also looks like a phoenix when in mid flight. As for my real name, I kind of doubt it has anything to do with a talent I have.

Lol, just a rhetorical question about how names work in the MLP universe with "your" meaning any hypothetical member of the pony species. I probably should have said "does one's name in the MLP universe determine one's talent?" Sorry for the confusion. :P

I think it's 50/50, the name they give the pony is also kinda related to the talent for some ponies, then for others it's not.

The CMC don't seem to have names related to there talents (as shown in the talent show episode). But for most other ponies, especially background ponies, they did have a similar name/talent/cutie mark.

I think things like the apple family also inherit the name and the skills, just like a son inheriting the fathers business and because of this names and cutie makes are related very very closely.

You would be wrong about that, Sweetie Belle has a name that implies her voice is a sweet and soft as a bell. Scootaloo has a name that implies she is good with a scooter. Applebloom... well you got me there.

What would, "The Great and Powerful Trixie" be relevant to? I'm rather certain that Trixie only added TGAP part, so what could "Trixie" imply? It doesn't seem like anything, and there's other random characters that don't have very relevant names to their talent/personality, so I'll jump on with 50/50 think with Happy Plant.

Hmm, I guess :P

I would love to see their cutie marks to see if they fit as well, but I doubt they ever will do an episode about it as it closes off there current episode format :/

I would not put it past Hasbro to troll everybrony and actually let them get there cutie marks. But I honestly think it would not happen until it gets close to the end of the series. So when it does happen, everypony should fear for the impeding series finale.

Trixie's talent has to do with magic tricks. Moreover, in the personality sense, she engages in trickery by making others believe false things about her.

You, Miss, just blew my mind. I've never thought to make such a connection between "Trixie" and "Trickery".

Haha, yeah, it's actually a pretty clever name if you think about it! Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of Trixie as a character, but I think her name and talent are kind of cool. Can't recall what her Cutie Mark is, though. Is it related to magic/tricks in some way also?

Well, personally I think it's mostly coincidence but it's possible. I mean, names might influence what a pony looks into. Like Apple Bloom in one episode figured since she was part of the apple family her talent was apple related.

From what I remember it's like a magic wand casting a spell with spark behind it so yeah, it's pretty similar :)

Oh dear, the one topic i have thought about many times when I'm watching the show. I do believe that most names corresponding with ones talent/cutie mark, but you'll notice some are not. Take Fluttershy for example, her cutie mark is of three butterflies. How does this correspond with Fluttershy? Fluttering? Perhaps, butterflies do so...though it goes down to what the talent is and it's not really since it comes out as the of nurturing the animals. (i'm going to stop here because i could go for hours on this, half the time repeating what i said before.)

No I believe fluttershy is a play on the word butterfly, making it not only seem automatically obvious that she is dainty like a butterfly but also the has the word shy in it, so her personality is that of a shy ponies.
