Hat988 108 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 (edited) I can understand other annoying behaviours. - Gossipers can spread misinformation in their haste to know it all. - Interrupters force you to condense your sentences so you can say everything before they try to jump in. - Overly negative people can have their ideas catch on just out of repetition over validity. Boasters can be condescending, performing as if nobody can think to match their skill. But there are boasters who recognise that others can do the same as them. When boasters talk about their victories for other purpose than to tell everyone, it is annoying. But how? It is causing no harm and it may only be a problem with the insecurity of the audience. Then again, even self-secure people can get annoyed by this behaviour. I want to know what is precisely grating about boasting so I can determine if it is a problem of the boaster or the subject. The two episodes of FiM (Trixie and Mare-Do-Well) did not really explain the issue. They just said that nopony likes a braggart and left it at that. I agree, but I don't yet know why I agree. moneyshredderofdeath 414 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 Being proud of one's accomplishments is alright. It's a problem when one uses their accomplishments to put themselves on a pulpit and put down anyone who isn't them. A huge ego, in essence.
Swoop 2,278 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 For one to boast, there must be an air of patronising superiority present. If there aren't any condescending undertones, then the individual is not boasting, but simply talking with a feeling of satisfaction, derived from their own achievements. One conveys arrogance; an annoyance on the behalf of the boaster. The other can result in envy, covetousness, or similar feelings of discontent which are the result of individual insecurities and/or shortcomings. "Boast Busters" and "The Mysterious Mare Do Well" both touch of the issue of boasting and excessive pride, rather than feelings of resentful longing.
Gone Airbourne 21,977 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 When someone takes boasting out of proportions it leaves them with a nasty reputation. It is certainly good to be proud of the things that one has accomplished in life however when someone takes it too far that is where the problem lies. Boasting can be very distasteful to others and is very annoying at that.
Klopp 2,050 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 The problem has nothing to do with giving yourself praise for a good accomplishment, the problem arises when you instill a notion of superiority in your tone to make those around you feel less able and/or inferior. Anyone could easily be excited when they achieve something great, or perform a feat that is considered superior to the norm. Expressing your delight over such things is only to be expected, and is not bothersome in the slightest to most. However, when someone begins to add a tone that gives a personal goal an "I'm better than you" feel, that's when it becomes a problem, and when people start to think of you as a condescending narcissist, with little care for the feelings of others. I personally do not mind when others boast, really. It just helps me weed out those who I should probably not be associating with. Trixie is a good example of one I would much rather not. :3
null1 606 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 I hate narcissism, I have a friend who has probably screwed too much and talks about it too damn much. I can understand boasting if it's in a sarcastic, joking manner, or if the boaster has actually accomplished a feat worthy of becoming a braggart. But if one boasts for the purpose of making themselves look good, they're a damn narcissist. Trixie, as said in previous posts, is one good example. Whenever I watched that episode, I wished someone would be frank with her that she's a narcissist. It always bugged me.
XUNUSEDXXX 3,459 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 Klopp gave a pretty accurate description as to why people hate boasting. But it's pretty much making others seem like nothing to the boaster. Boasting, obviously, leads to people being full of themselves and usually that can lead to other bad things.
Crispy 5,563 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 You could pretty much just post Boast Busters here and have your answer. It's fine to be proud of your accomplishments, but not to use them against others to put them down. Examples abound in the Diablo III forums. "lol stop QQing about broken game, get lvl 60 first then talk, tryhard." 1 GET IN THE PIT On 8/23/2012 at 1:54 AM, Djenty said: ON MLP 4UMS ERRYTHIN IS SRS
PonyEcho 1,610 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 well i'm not gona lie, but i do boast about some epic thing i have do, mainly if there funny and i know someone else may get a good chuckle. but i personally don't like it when people boast all the time and get all arrogant which is why i don't like young PC gamer (but that may also be due to the fact that i was born into a very poor family so ever thing i got i earned. there also allot of it in gaming i mean brag about how good you are all you want but don't complain when people point out your not as as good as you think, i'm just go around saying i'm average. also i'm gona have to bring Alacorn OC up here because i find something arrogant about it all exspeaciay when people try to defend it sayng there not mary or gary sues but then say in a bragging tone that alicorns are leaders along with other things that annoyme(see Alicorn radios alicorn rage for reference) also death to all Alacorn OC's ( ;P what can i say i don't like high society) and here is my biggest problem with it all when boaster complain and blame others which pretty much speak for it self. e.g. there was this guy i knew who has a good life, well a better one then most people but they complained about not being offered a job despite being so skilled and life not giving them anything followed but a very annoying quote. in the end it all a conflict of confidence and arrogance my DA http://heavyecho.deviantart.com/ check my stuff out the Anime Club http://mlpforums.com/topic/48196-the-anime-club/ plz join us

Twiliscael 3,960 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 Trixie. All that Trixie is and everything she stands for. Seriously, I'm kind of a boaster so I really shouldn't be one to talk. But when OTHER people boast, I can get pretty annoyed. Easily. I tend to take the high road, get stoned, and fly low . . .
Iudex 1,945 August 18, 2012 Share August 18, 2012 It's alright if you're proud, but you don't have to tell the whole damn world. It's like the way you get annoyed when someone calls tour name repeatedly, knowing full well you can hear them. If you've done something great don't let it get to you're head, many people find this annoying. It gets to the point where we really don't care anymore.
