I got derailed researching the spelling of forty/fourty. Here's a quote that works as an answer for both of us:

 

"Logically, 'fourty' makes sense: four, fourteen, fourty. But English and logic don't always agree, and this is one of those cases."

English isn't always logical. "Forty winks" is some old idiom that may or may not have made sense to begin with. That's really all there is to it.
