Out of the free ones, MuseScore is the best that I've tried in terms of a features-ease of use balance (there are others more powerful, but they're also rather complex; other ones with a similar ease-of-use tend to be... well, not quite ready).

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the paid ones, but I believe Sibelius is the standard there - I'm sure someone else'll be able to fill you in better there.

I have a few friends that use Fruity loops studio (it's really good) but the only way to get it is to pirate it seen as its over £100 for a legit copy (unless you have that sort of money) :(

I'd go with fruity loops or FL studio as it's now called as Happy Plant said

It's pretty easy to use, you might need to save up a bit to get it but trust me it's aewsome. Don't get the basic edition if you want to use samples like drum sounds or loops from other song's etc because it dosen't let you import

Anyway a fully working demo is avaliabe if you want a try with it

Hope that helps

Well, for the amateur, Garageband and Mixcraft are ok, but they're very limited in functionality, but are also very cheap.

More advanced, professional software like Logic, Ableton and Cubase are much more capable and are used by most professional electronic musicians. However, what most electronic musicians use, are VST's. Good VST's to use are Massive, Nexus, FM8 and Sylenth.

Fruity Loops is also good, but the best package is around $500, so if you can't afford it, don't get it.

Like Mark said, I would try Musescore, it's pretty simple and stil gets the job done. Fruity Loops seemed a bit too complicated for me, but idk. Try musescore. Good Luck!

Hey dude, I've been making music for an year and a half, trust me ;)

I currently use Reason 5 rewired to Fruity loops being used for Sonar X1 as a independent Channel (Look how 3 musical softwares are working together, Frienship!), While I still use free programs such as musescore and modplug trackor

Ok, If you have at least $100 or something, try going for FL Studio, I reccomend it to begginers who only recently got into Digital audio workstations. If you get the signiture bundle, you'll get thsese legit software instruments, effects and recorders. If you don't have windows however, then logic pro is an alternative for mac users.

unfortunately, if you have no money in your deposit, then try out LMMS Link:http://lmms.sourceforge.net/

It's a free, GNU DAW that is nearly identical to Fruityloops, it can also read midi and export to wav unlike most open-source software. It runs on Windows, Unix and Linux, but also can be run on mac using a wrapper (i.e. Darwin)

Good luck!

As I'm quite a few have said already, Fruity Loops is a good program, but it is expensive unless you pirate it.

Ableton live is another program. Haven't used this one myself so I can't say if its easy or user friendly, but it is a program.

Fruityloops is actually pretty cheap for a full scale DAW, well, actually like in mid range, "cheap" Would be something like mixcraft, it's a couple hundred dollars, so as abelton, which is also in the 300$ - 400$ price range.

And no, don't pirate, never ,NEVER PIRATE, EVER!,

It's not really a price problem, the company isn't cheap. it's a service problem, using a pirated, unlicenced program to make, share and sell the product is indeed, illegal and very disrespectful to the development team devoting their life working on such things, If people find out you use a pirated product, your in risk. So don't be cheap, buy it, infact, image line made the pricing as fair as possible, they even have Occasional sales cutting down their prices.
