silvadel 1,393 September 4, 2012 Share September 4, 2012 I mean it is obvious that she does like to go after mice (likely much to fluttershy's chagrin) but what would Rarity feed her? I mean cats are practically 100% carnivorous and would go blind and have other major issues without lots of meat. Most of the pets/animals that you see around ponyville are herbivorous or at least eat things like worms in the case of birds. Other than Opal I can only really think of Winona as a carnivorous pet and they probably manage enough meat for her from dead pigs // chickens // etc. Even so I can see Winona being quite the drain on Sweet Apple Acres. I still wonder sometimes about ponies fishing as well. Some do seem to have fishmarks. 1 Silvadel, the Pegasus of Insight.
Ink 191 September 4, 2012 Share September 4, 2012 Rarity wouldn't want a normal pet - she would want a rare, glamorous pet, which is exactly what Opalescence is! He's a jeweltiger, an extremely rare breed of cat native to the Galloping Gorge. By moulting their fur and eating it, jeweltigers are capable of going without food for several years - they grow the fur back very quickly, so they always have plenty to eat in case they get hungry. Jeweltigers are related to the lazulions of Smokey Mountain. Starshadow 5 September 4, 2012 Share September 4, 2012 I assumed Opalescent ate mice and birds. There are a number of things that affect how much a cat eats, like size and activity level. Assuming Opal was totally average she would only need to eat 1-3 mice a day. She should easily be able to manage that amount, I have an elderly half blind cat that is able to catch about 5 a day. (I live on a large property in a rural area and need cats to keep the rodent population down. The old cat doesn't eat them any more, just piles them up, that's how I know how many he gets)
Regality 233 September 4, 2012 Share September 4, 2012 Just a thought, but maybe rarity actually feeds her cat cat food? I don't see why cat food (similar to the kind we have) couldn't have been invented if they already have arcade machines. Although like most others are saying, she'd probably just eat mice if Rarity didn't feed her cat food. ~~
silvadel 1,393 September 4, 2012 Author Share September 4, 2012 I don't see Opal being a self-sustaining hunter. I mean every cat we have had, we fed. It would kind of explain why Opal doesnt exactly get along swimmingly with Rarity -- I mean one of the things that cements a bond with a cat is feeding it and if she doesnt do that.... Plus I somehow think Fluttershy would be a lot less apt to take Opal home for grooming etc, if it ate birds. The birds in MLP seem pretty smart -- at least smart enough to sing at Fluttershy's command and learn scores. I think birds are out. I still wonder about fish -- I mean it couldnt be that hard for a unicorn to lift a fish out of the water for cat food. Silvadel, the Pegasus of Insight. Silverhoof 2,844 September 5, 2012 Share September 5, 2012 There is a scene where Fluttershy delivers fish to a pair of martins. Its possible that Fluttershy feeds the kitty fresh fish every day. Dusty Soul 2,611 September 5, 2012 Share September 5, 2012 Cat food... Most definitely cat food... About the fishing... They might fish for sport, but Rarity takes them instead. So yeah I think it's mainly cat food. Soundcloud-------------------Facebook---------------------------Youtube
NavelColt 22,881 September 5, 2012 Share September 5, 2012 (edited) She eats the souls of not only unfortunate vermin, birds and small animals that tread past her cage, but also the souls of ponies that get on her bad side. That cat is evil. Just look what she did to poor Sweetie Belle. No really, I really don't like Opal much, and I LOVE cats. Hopping back onto the Serious Express, I would have to say fish and cat food are probably the two biggest possibilities. Fish is more or less canon, like what was mentioned already, and there's no reason some form of cat food hasn't been created by ponies. silvadel 1,393 September 5, 2012 Author Share September 5, 2012 As a cat Opal reminds me of an animal that knows it can get away with it. She pushes Rarity around because she knows she CAN push Rarity around. Fluttershy already has one pet in that category and that is Angel -- Angel wouldnt put up with Opal pushing Fluttershy around -- that is her job. Silvadel, the Pegasus of Insight. Winona the Dog 1,984 September 5, 2012 Share September 5, 2012 Id go figure Opal eats Fish or maybe Rarity has some cat food somewhere in the house. Maybe Opal has a secret cat nip stash hidden somewhere.
XUNUSEDXXX 3,459 September 6, 2012 Share September 6, 2012 I wouldn't be suprised to see them eat anything that normal cats in our world eat. I mean, what would change much? Just cause ponies are vegetarians doesn't mean others arent.

Marshmallow 1,137 September 7, 2012 Share September 7, 2012 Other than Opal I can only really think of Winona as a carnivorous pet and they probably manage enough meat for her from dead pigs Really? You can't think of another carnivorous animal when one of the main cast as an alligator for a pet?! I'm not sure how Pinkie feeds gummy. Especially since unlinke cats and dogs, alligators can't really on small rodents. Fish maybe. After all, we've seen Fluttershy give fish to some otters in one episode. And for the record, out of the main cast, only Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash have non-carnivorous pets. silvadel 1,393 September 7, 2012 Author Share September 7, 2012 Gummy? As a baby alligator she can live off worms, snails, insects etc. Gummy isnt large enough to need a real meat diet yet where you have to catch fish or small game. Although you do have a point that there will come a time when pinkie pie starts to have trouble feeding her pet as well. Silvadel, the Pegasus of Insight. Abstract 832 September 7, 2012 Share September 7, 2012 This is why the concept of ponies owning pets is kind of problematic. If I had to guess...I mean, cat food, maybe fish? It seems to echo most other thought in this thread, and seems pretty logical. "Let the steel of my resolve be not bested by the sum of my fears."
