Zoop 8,384 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 This thread is a public service announcement in response to a recent event that served as a bit of a rude awakening regarding the attitudes that some folks may have regarding content that infringes on our rules. We thought that touching upon what classifies as appropriate and inappropriate ways of dealing with such things might be worthwhile. First off, regardless of how old something is, if you see something that has apparently slipped notice (let's be honest here, it happens) and gone undetected in one way or another, report it. Do not say to yourself "oh my, nobody is ever going to find this - I should leave it be!" - the fact that you stumbled upon it yourself has already disproved any theory that nobody else is going to find it. Report it and let it be dealt with once and for all. Second, starting a thread (or status update, or whatever) for the sole sake and purpose of publicizing something that is in violation of our community rules is a... well, to be completely honest I'm a bit at a loss of words in attempting to describe how completely stupid of an idea it is in the end. You're going to accomplish a fat load of nothing, other than making yourself (and the community as a whole) look like a buffoon. Depending on the situation and circumstances, you may yourself be hit with one or more warnings for it as well - think 'abusive behavior' in the case that your post is seen as harassing someone that is innocent of wrong doing (more on that below), or 'borderline NSFW' if you include a very poorly censored version of a pornographic image that hides absolutely nothing. While you may think it funny to try and get a laugh by stating "there's (porn/whatever) somewhere on the site! Here's evidence!", we will not find it amusing in the slightest - we have an extremely clear stance on things like NSFW material and will not tolerate people that post it or people that attempt to draw attention to it if it somehow slips under the radar. Furthermore, openly withholding information regarding the post in question from the site staff - and going so far as to state that your goal is to make the site staff angry with you - will not work to your benefit in any way shape or form. Now, I guess you're all wondering how NSFW material can fly under the radar without being noticed by a moderator (or reported) almost instantly, right? It's pretty simple, actually. Occasionally when somebody links to an image on the forum they make the mistake of linking directly to it on the server that they originally found it on, without moving it to an appropriate location (forum file upload, imgur, etc). Hotlinking to an image in this way is not a good idea because you have no control over it; it could eventually be moved or deleted - or worse, it could be replaced with another image; either intentionally, or automatically an anti-hotlinking script. Depending on the temperament of the person that controls the server that the original image was on, you could be faced with anything from a broken image, a polite image requesting that you not hotlink, or something exceptionally pornographic. Either way, it's bad news! With all of that said and done, I'm sure at least a few folks here know all about the recent event I'm talking about - please do not discuss it here. I'm not interested in having anyone be publicly shamed or called out.
LightRaider 148 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 Crap, i'll have to make sure to upload all my images to imgur instead of directly linking to them. I didn't know that this could happen, thanks for the heads up.

FoxyCryptid 4,330 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 Not going to ask what happened, but this rule should be common sense, when you see something report it and move on instead of causing more of a drama over it. 5 "You know, I don't know who or what you are Methos, and I know you don't want to hear this, but you did teach me something. cuteycindyhoney 13,308 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 I use Photobucket, and have their firefox add on uploader. If I see a cool image, I just right click on it, and send it to my Photobucket page. Then I just grab the code and post that on the site. It's safer, and makes things much easier! 7 Thank you Sparklefan1234!!!
Starshine 16,334 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 Praise the imgur and their ultra-fast and sleek uploading function o/ Second, starting a thread (or status update, or whatever) for the sole sake and purpose of publicizing something that is in violation of our community rules is stupid Say, if I start a thread about my own arts, and then put a link of my Deviantart account on the bottom, will that count as an advertising attempt?

Will those hotlinkers got a warning when they unknowingly posted something directly from a less-than-benevolent site?

Will those hotlinkers got a warning when they unknowingly posted something directly from a less-than-benevolent site? Sadly there is no way for us to know what is and is not an authorized hotlink due to the large number of image hosting services, and the fact that some folks store stuff on their own webspace.
Evilshy 5,090 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 Well, I always check what I'm posting before and after posting it, so I catch any image shenanigans that happen automatically. Just a note here, for anyone looking to put images in their posts for any reason, you can upload them to MLP Forums itself. Up to 100 MB per file, there is no upper limit on how many files you can upload (seriously, don't worry about our disk space - we have a dedicated server with two storage arrays), and there's no need to leave mlpforums.com to make your post. I highly recommend this method, because it puts the hosting of the images directly under our control. This means: They'll stay online as long as MLP Forums does (even Imgur will delete your uploads after a few months), so it spells an end to broken and slow-loading images in posts. They're delivered at top speed through MLP Forums' content delivery network. No recompression of huge or high-quality images. No bandwidth limits (Photobucket, I'm looking at you...) Clickable thumbnails in threads - huge images don't slow the entire page down. No risk of the image being tampered with behind anyone's back. NavelColt 22,881 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 I use Photobucket, and though I have tons of images, I've never even broken 20% on my bandwidth scale, so I usually use that along with uploaded files for signatures and avatars in my mass topics focused around those things. But either way, I too wasn't aware that people actually replace hot-linked images with other images; especially something like pornography. A good announcement. Knowing that things online are not always as cut and dry as they appear is a valuable piece of knowledge to have. Saves the wrong people from being accused.
Creamy Arty 6,252 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 (edited) @, I will host things here that I make myself and some random nonsense I find about the interwebz like stupid reaction images and watermaked junk from memebase. Should I ever decide to post something I took from a tumblr or deviantart page that I want to share, I tend to upload it somewhere else. If I'm concerned with permanency I usually stick it in my imageshack or imgur accounts rather than just tossing it out there willy-nilly. Makes it easier for me to share on multiple forums and if the content's creator catches wind of it and decides to pitch a fit, they'll want the image removed at its source, which isn't here. ^ I love that one. I am particularly sympathetic to this situation because the same thing happened to me once about a decade ago, before I learned about proper linking etiquette. Solar Wind 595 October 20, 2012 Share October 20, 2012 I have always saved a pic I was going to use to my HD and then posted it, until just recently when I started using the URL thing to save my HD space and not have people go "Wtf is with all these pics?" However even though I know what this is about I agree with Zoop, that something like this should not be made a spectacle of, especially not on a forum for little girls ponies. Sorry. 2 See, I'm Greed. I want everything you can think of. Money and women, power and SEX. I want everything this world's selling! and immortality's topping the list!
