Teach me how to vector?

Okay so I am aware that some of you wizards on here know how to make the vector images!

I do not. Sadly I have never been artistic at all. I am HORRIBLE at pen and paper drawing and I dont know about on the computer. I have downloaded GIMP but I have been told that its not the best for this sort of thing. I also dont know how people make it, do you guys have a tablet? I dont have a drawing tablet I have to use my computer. I have read the DA guide on pony vectoring and I felt like I was reading backwards algebra. I just need help learning how to make these magical pieces of art so below are a few questions I have...

 

>Do you use a tablet, Laptop, or desktop to vector?

 

>How do you vector? Drawing lines,? making paths? Which is your personal way of doing it?

 

>What program do you use? Illustrator, Inkscape, GIMP, Paint? Which program do you use to vector images?

 

>How do you add someones OC to a vector? I have a complicated OC but some of you guys dont. How do you guys get the right hex codes for coat and mane color, AND manage to customize the mane, and clothing on different ponies?

 

Basically in general I have no idea. Im a blank slate and I could REALLY use some help with this.

Vectoring seems like a useful and fun skill and I hate asking people to vector my OC. I would like to be able to do that myself. Please quote me and just help me a bit with trying to grasp this bizaare skill, that I am so SO envious of....

I use Illustrator to make vectors. Just bring an image into illustrator, lock the layer that its on, trace over it with drawing lines with the pen tool, and then you've turned your pixelated pony into a vector, voila! and I use a laptop, but you probably want something with a mouse

I use my desktop computer with an ordinary mouse.

Put down nodes and connect them with curves.

INKSCAPE. It's easy to learn, leight weight, free, exports higher quality images than Illustrator and I like turtles.

You just drag and drop the image into the document and set it as background. Then you use tools to get the correct colors.

So glad you responded I have seen some of your vectorsrs and they are great! Plus your short guide made it a bit easier to understand then some massive wall of text... I do still have a few questions like about the eyes of a pony and whatnot but I kinda wanna take it slow. First step, illegally downloading adobe illustrator!

No I said wrong haha I mean Inkscape. It was an little misstake I made there. I prefer inkscape over illustrator because..well.. Re-read my post.(it should be edited by now)

I tried sme vector work yesterday and failed miserably, but now I've stubbled across this thread, Im gonna look at the tutorials that jokuc posted and see if I can get into it properly, a few years back I was into making signatures on photoshop, spent hours on each price ( the longest took a total of 72 hours to complete and was comprised of over 40 layers) so I have the patience for it
