Why is an engine primarily designed to create 3D games, being used to make a 2D game? I mean I know it's possible to do it in Unity3D, but why not use something like Gamemaker?

It doesn't really look like you are doing anything crazy that GM wouldn't be able to handle...

Maybe the thing that gamemaker cannot handle is being multiplatform. But still I don't know if Unity apps are Linux compatible, because from what I saw on their page the editor runs only on win and mac.

EDIT: just looked on their page: games made in Unity should be linux compatible ^^

It's a lot nicer to share ideas and concepts. Also an even wider multi platform support that Game Maker. Also the artists can go as crazy as they want. Especially with animations coming in.

Ooh Unity 4 just came out today :P I don't know too much about that, I'll see with the coders.

Gamemaker can export to both mac and windows. Linux has such a small market share that it is usually left out. Besides, why would someone have only linux available? A reasonable person should have at least 2 different operating systems if not all of the main 3.

We had a weird idea that we'd export it everywhere. Although with copyrights and stuff it may be a problem. Because we all liked the idea but didn't want to deal with it right now, we would still be able to deal with it later on with Unity rather than not having that option in Gamemaker.

I'll ask our namby pamby coders. Good point though :P

I guess it would then depend on the size of the sprites. I was under the impression that they were going to be small since pixel art usualy is, but if its not going to be pixel art, then you would be best using Unity since gamemaker slows down when sprites get large... although I haven't tested that since they converted their compiler to C... *shrug*

If you guys need someone to create GUI then I'd be glad to help. I was already working on a pony themed GUI, but then I stopped because I got bored of a GUI with no use.

I dont think it would fit your game, but you can still see some of the pieces here:

I havent been very active lately here on the forums because of school, but Ive got one major math exam tomorow and then i should have plenty of free time. Im preety decent at at C# and i have experience with the Unity3d engine.

If you guys are still looking for coders, sign me up. Also, out of curiosity, what are BronyPonyFanatic and huzi_a currently writing in? If they're both sticking to C#, it would make sharing, updating and reprogramming much simpler.

And it would be nice to have a skype group, or some other way to speed up communication. Its gonna take ages if everything is arranged over forums or emails...

Yes please :D We'd love any help! You've got a pretty high standard of art there :P which we'd really like to see in our game! We've got a few things to design right now, but once our story is a little more definitive there'll be a lot of places to help out.

Yup, got a Skype group running. You'll have to ask them how they're doing, they don't seem to be updating too much. We'd really appreciate your input into the game. Sign up at talesofequestria.mlpforums.com whenever you get time then :P I'll surely accept.

I just want to add here, from personal experience, it's extremely tempting to use Skype to communicate with a team because it's so fast and instant. But if everyone is not online when something important is said, it inevitably gets lost and forgotten in the massive chat log, which can result in a whole lot of misinformation and ignorance that ultimately hinders the project and creates bad feelings within the team.

Doing as much as possible via forums means that everything that anyone contributes to a discussion is logged in a reliable, organized, and easily retrievable manner that is not dependent on "being there for the discussion". Ever since we started strictly enforcing an internal MLP Forums policy to discuss anything important in our staff forums, the team has become a lot more productive and integrated. I strongly, strongly recommend against using Skype as your primary means of team communication.

I think we're going to be using Unity4 just because we can (rather than Unity3). By using this engine, our game will have a completely different look/feel than other Pony RPGs out there. And we're looking to stand out from the rest by not just having good gameplay but an outstanding plot, amazing art styles and beautiful music.

We really need animators and sprite artists now!!! (places for music art story and coders are still open btws)
