Why such hate?

PonyEcho

Recommended Posts

Well, in the first, unless you're just as tactless as Spike, are you REALLY going to tell the truth? :P

And on the second, well, like I said. Terrified from what's probably her biggest fear, she wouldn't really want anyone else to know. The thing I like about this things, it's that they are really "Real life" things. Even if they are related to a certain trait they are suppposed to follow.

I got that much. :P Even though it's interesting to note you hate so much Applejack, when Rainbow Dash has the same VA. Probably a thing with the tone. Oh well. To each their own. :)

Ha, I don't like Rainbow Dash that much either. The only thing I like RD for is her cutie mark and her sonic rainbooms, but otherwise she annoys me almost as much as Applejack.

yeah i see where you're coming from but i think the writers have tried to make it so that the mane six are not chained to there element, Rarity can be selfish and greedy, Fluttershy can be mean, Rainbowdash can be disloyal, Pinkie Pie can snap, Twilight can fall victim to her own habits, and ApplaJack can tell a lie

honestly I can only think of 2 times she lied (outside of her discorded self) was when she broke her Pinkie promise via a loop hole and in party of one (where every pony was lying to Pinkie pie)

Edit- wait i forgot in Boast Busters when she lied to Rarity as to not hurt her feelings,

This. Each pony probably represents a character because it is what they most do. However, that does not chain them to ALL THE TIME represent such trait. And that's what makes the characters appealing. Having faults. Amen to the writers for that. :) (especially when the faults can result in hilarious scenes ^_^ )

A true honest person wouldn't lie, they'd tell the truth or avoid the question to be nice. I don't think people should lie to try to make people feel better. And I'm rather annoyed by that.

I still love AJ though.

Well, Applejack couldn't really avoid the question in Boast Busters, seen as how she was a participant and was not going to be left out. And in The Last Roundup she DID try to avoid it. Sometimes, you can't avoid it, and you know it. So, you omit the truth/lie because there's no other choice. Besides, one has to consider the mind factor. Driven by fear, a LOT of VERY honest persons can do things they wouldn't normally do. But I understand what you mean though. :)

You do realize that she hasn't actually lied, rather omitted the truth, right?

That's still lying. The OED definition of lying is as follows: To lie =df to make a false statement with the intention to deceive.

I think that defines Applejack's actions well enough to me. There are more situations of her lying than telling the truth and the Last Round Up is a good example. And even in episode 2 of the first season when they had the tasks practically designs for them, Applejack still wasn't completely honest. A normal person would go "I'm going to let you go but those two will catch you, trust me." but no, she says something more like "I'm going to drop you and you just have to trust what I'm saying for no valid reason other than I said so." That's it, go make Twilight the element of trust then.

I could rant about this for a while.

Okay, and if we were to say that each element is based on what they do most, make her the element of reliability. I see a lot more of that than honesty.

Because it's fun to hate something.

Don't mind people who dislike characters, because, one if there's one thing the Internet loves to do, it's watching and making fun of bad things, whether it's unsatisfying films or a characters from popular shows. It's fun. To those who have dissed on characters, you have had fun doing it. Admit it. :3

The Last Roundup was made to look a bit more into Applejack's faults. There has always been an episode similar to that for the rest.

Yes those would be lying too, I admit, that definition is correct. but lies or not, one has to see the intention behind it, aside from deceiving. Sometimes it is for one would call "the greater good". Of course, other times it is clearly not. But one doesn't always know that difference.

On episode 2, she reassured that Twilight would be fine, which was true. Besides, do we really know if AJ knew RD and Fluttershy would catch Twilight? For all we know, AJ was just trusting her gut that Fluttershy and RD would catch her (or maybe even someone else), but maybe she didn't really know. And also, there's not a lot of time to talk when hanging from a cliff, you know? What else do you look for? A quick and correct explanation of what will happen and why should you trust me? When hanging from a cliff, that doesn't seem really plausible...or interesting for the show, as second reason.

And also, reliability depends on how honest you were when you were told to go and accomplish something you were asked to do, therefore, reliable associates to honesty, which is AJ's element. This is my take on all this though.

"the greater good"

The greater good is a matter of perspective, or Communism. Take your pick.

Because everybody has time to say "Let go. No I ain't. I promise you'll be safe. Now listen here. What I'm sayin to you is the honest truth. Let go, and you'll be safe." but there isn't time to say "Hey, I'll let go and they'll catch you." Makes sense.

In the end, we aren't going to agree. I'll drop it there.

hmm i'll pick perspective

allot of people like to harp on Applejack just because she had lied with out looking at her motivation to do so.

her lie to Rarity in Boast Busters was to not hurt Rarity's feeling , rather then just say that Rarity looks horrible

in Party of One Everyone lied to pinkie pie to keep her party a secret to surprise her, but that played at Applejack being vary bad at it and having to do more of it because the party was as the barn.

Last Round Up she was ashamed of her self for not winning any prize money (something that was expected of her to do) and did not want to face the consequence so she went out of her way to get a job and work to obtain money to bring back. her lie was so that she would hide her shame and some way convince them t go so she can make the money and not disappointing.

each time she lies there was some strong motivation for it that wan't as selfish as some lies are. again no pony is perfect.

and now when did this become a debate about Applejack?

To better understand what she did, it'd be best to look at a similar hypothetical scenario:

I promise to give you, say, my awesome Bidoof to you at a restaurant. With that alone, if I were to show up and didn't hand anything to you, that would be lying.

However, what if I didn't show up? Remember that the promise I made was that I would give you my awesome Bidoof at the restaurant. I never said that I would show up. I wouldn't be honest by I wouldn't lie unless I said that I would show and didn't show.

It's the same thing for her, she said she would tell her friends everything during breakfast but didn't show up. Breakfast never happened so she was unable to lie about that. She was dishonest but not a legit liar.

Her reasoning behind the lie is actually understandable. She also promised the first place money but she was unable to fulfill it. Not a legit lie either since she didn't know she would get second place at best but she was ashamed of that. No reason to hate her for that episode itself.

What I don't necessarily like about her is that she doesn't have any characteristic that makes her stick out. Twilight has her OCD, Rarity has her overreacting, Fluttershy has her cuteness, Rainbow Dash has her awesomness and Pinkie has her... well... Pinkieness. Applejack, however, doesn't have much that make me remember her actions beyond her episodes.

This a pretty horrible hypothetical scenario, and just further proves my point. Anyone who reneges on a gift that they said that they were going to give, is a selfish lying jerk who leads people on and crushes their dreams for fun. Yeah I would dislike her even more if she did something like that. But what she did was bad enough.

Has anyone heard the phrase, "The road to hell was paved with good intentions." So basically it doesn't matter if your intentions were pure, you lied.

Yes, but unless you haven't lied AT ALL with the infamous "white lie", or haven't EVER needed to say a lie to avoid something bad happening, it doesn't really apply here. Applejack DOESN'T want to lie, let alone do it all the time, now does she? But eh, I'll drop it here, or it will start gettijng off-topic, like PonyEcho said.

yeah i have heard that phrase, and are using it to the should purpose of damning Applejack, fun fact we all lie and in the show Applejack has been the only one to do so.

on this principal you would have to dislike each of the mane 6 and Applebloom

this is why i find the whole Applejack lied thus i don't like her to be some what hollow

"white lie"

White lies are actually worse than regular lies, here is a neat quote I found "A white lie is worse than a straight-out lie because not only is the element of faking reality present, but the person to whom you are telling the lie is thereby deemed by you incapable of facing reality and needs protection from it. That is, the person is deemed insufficiently rational to accept a fact of reality and deal with it"

Hate is a strong word. I don't hate any characters. I don't care at all for Snips and Snails because I believe they're only slightly above 'a waste of space', and Diamond Tiara annoys me, but I don't hate.

I pretty much agree with this, I'd throw in Trixie and Gilda as well for characters that annoy me mainly because I don't really find anything about them appealing.

Oh really? Isn't that one of the extremes instead of it being applied to EVERY white lie? Let's face it. Sometimes, reality might not be the best to use in the exact moment. There are times and places. I agree that SOMETIMES, one is underestimating the other's capability to cope with reality whenever telling a white lie. But sometimes, both of us KNOW that protecting reality is for the best. Or what? Do you want to ruin EVERY child's fantasies? Or any other fantasy at all? Fact is, with this, you're saying that reality HAS to be ALWAYS the one thing to show, almost disregarding the person altogether. But this is quite the subjective matter, so I'll drop it before it deviates again.

I disagree with your reasoning completely. I firmly believe that if you want a loved one to ever trust you, you should be completely honest with them. Lying to someone using a white lie tells the other person that you think they are incompetent, and yes I think you should be completely honest with your children too. If they are old enough to ask a question, they are old enough to receive an age appropriate answer (and by that I mean using a vocabulary they will understand). I was raised this way, and I turned out as a unique, well educated individual. I learned quickly that there are somethings you can and can not do, and I abided the rules society laid out for me. White lies only leave people naive or angry (if they find out). Indeed a white lie is worse than a straight-out lie.

Generally people dislike a character because that character reminds them of someone they dislike or a character trait that they dislike. I haven't any hatred for any character per say but I do dislike Diamon Tiara, but then I'm supposed to thats the way she's written.

Well, hate is one of the worst words i know actually. I don't like how people just spit it out like that. The only one/thing i hate is a person who have been stalking me for 3 years? But "Hating" a character from a cartoon is not one of my things. There is only one person who i really dislike in the series and that is Gilda. Sure she is cool and stuff but really i really got pissed of when she screamed at Fluttershy and that stuff.

I also have an opinion about Diamond Tiara. She is a really "Bitchy" character overall. Though there must be some good in her somewhere and i guess there will be at least one episode where she actually show her kindness and sweetness.

So well, to be honest i HATE the word hate.

To be honest, I feel slightly insulted for that. My parents have hidden the truth from me in a some times (for very silly things, like Santa Claus and such, and I have hidden the truth from myself, which in most occasions ended up being the right decision), and I too have grown to be a well educated person. It is not necessary to tell the truth so early, and even then, others not only would not be mad, but just dismiss it. But, that's your reasoning. I could not agree that reality is always needed. Not now nor ever. Both "fantasy" and "reality" have caused problems for being told at horrible times. As well both have caused the response that was needed/wanted for being told at the correct times (or being thought). But... I'll drop it there. This is already off-topic, and again, the subject is STRONGLY subjective. It would be hard to find a person who thinks the EXACT same thing as either of us do.

I will agree that we will never be able to understand each other's point of view, we have had (I am assuming) very different lives in very different places. I was raised to hear the truth of things, that doesn't mean that I am not a very emotional individual (because I am). It just means that I am not, nor have I ever been naives, it also means I grew up pretty fast. I personally will never hide things from someone, I will never tell a white lie to protect the truth from someone, nor will I omit the truth. I have lied in the past, about stupid things like every human does, but I will never tell someone a white lie. That is my reasoning behind not liking AppleJack, she lies quite frequently, and is very annoying. I am dropping this now because it seems rather redundant to keep this going and derail the whole entire topic. I did not mean to offend you, that was not the purpose of my posts, I apologize. I understand. I didn't mean to imply you weren't emotional, sorry for that. But I guess our minds really do differ a lot in this subject, at least. Considering I also tend to be a rather naive person (even though I don't want to), and I probably grew up in a different environment...yeah. I respect your opinion and train of thought. Let's just agree we disagree and leave it at that. :) I should have probably worded better anyway. Edited by Tom The Rock

@@Arcanel,

@,

@@The-Master,

@@PonyEcho,

Do you people want to know how many times i face-hoofed At this futile debate?

.... At least 3. Not much. But still.

It is outsanding how you guys can get into a debate about liein' and about applejack too.

Just let me say this: Who, the fuck, cares?

Seriously. So what she lied a few times. Big deal. She has flaws. Just like evryone else. No one is complete honest. WE ALL have lied before and you would be liein' if you say you havn't. No one is completely honest. Hell, i bet ol' Honest Abe has lied before.

Don't have to make much a big deal about liein'. Especially if its small. The only kind of lie i think is bad are the kind when the little devil on your shoulder tells you to say 'em. Meaning if you choose to say it for a bad intention.

And about white lies. I'm Ok with those. Yeah i know they still lied, and "fail to grasp reality" or whatever the quote 'nonymous said ment to say. But you wana know why I'm ok with 'em? They they are the kind that can be forgiven. As long as i see the person didn't mean it in a bad way and ment it in a good way, i can forgive it and move on. And yeah, i know, they LIED. No one better say "But they still lied".

And about that "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" quote, this is always gonna be my response to it: "But God is forgiving."

Heh, well there are my two bits. Just want to say 'em before i say that this stupid arguement is well... stupid. Its Ok if Applejack lies. I don't really give a damn. And you guys have different views of lies. Ok. Lieing can be bad, but lies can also be forgiven. Now, I'm all about the Truth. But If i have a good intention i may not say it or possibly obscure it. We all have flaws, and people make mistakes, sometimes we lie, sometimes we do other things. In the end its all about if you can forgive the person who has wronged you, and in this case, lied to you. Aint that what friendship all about? Yeah Aj lied to her friends, but her friends forgave her, even Pinkie who went insane. Now can we end this futile quarrel before someone else comments? heheh.

EDIT: Oh it seems to be all cleared... last time i saw this thread was an hour or so ago... so yeah i feel stupid. Forget what i said heh ^_^

The only characters I dislike is diamond tiara and silver spoon because of their constant belittling of the CMCs. But hey, everypony in that show represents something in our modern society. I look at this show in a deeper level. I don't like certain characters because of how I relate them to modern society. I see diamond tiara and silver spoon as two of the top celevpbraties who only care about themselves and no one else. This is a corruption in our modern society.

I also dislike Gilda because of how she called herself "cool". She thought that in order to be cool, u had to belong to a certain group. It's is what children go through in elementary school and is a perfect example of how this society has fallen into a big assumption trap. As I have said and heard, Being cool is being yourself, which Gilda did now know because of how she was raised.

Another character I disliked was trixie. Not only she was prideful but she used her magic and her words to belittle other ponies. Whenever I play a game and win, I am happy that I won, but, I always think and know that there's always someone better than me. This also applies to my music. But as rainbow dash said "trixie is just a loudmouth", the pride comes before the fall.

I believe the reason why we dislike these characters because in our minds, we unconciously connect the characters to things that happen in our daily lives.
