New, Advice for OC Requested

I've got a pretty good idea of what I want in my OC so far, but I have a tendency to doubt myself in most creative pursuits, so I thought I'd throw my OC out there and hear anything you guys have to say about him.

 

I've not really gone out of my way to create his bio so far, so I figure I'll do that here. I made him with myself in mind, to be honest. And seeing how I'm not great at defining myself, I'm not spectacular at defining my OC either.

 

 

 

At the moment, his name is Descant (Like my username. Look it up; it's an uncommon musical term), (I am open to any other names you can think of that might suit him better). He's a light purple unicorn with a dark red mane and tail, with dark purple highlights, and aqua eyes. His cutie mark, a bass clef, matches the shade of red in his mane. He's one of Ponyville's more prominent resident musicians, being able to skillfully play various musical instruments (Piano comes to mind, and various brass instruments), as well as sing.

 

Descant is generally considered strange by many ponies, due to various mannerisms, a certain awkwardness of character, and a unique view of the world, and as such, he has few friends. Twilight Sparkle comes to mind as being one who gets along with him. However, Descant doesn't really mind when other ponies avoid or insult him. In fact, he often takes it in his stride, because it means he's different and true to himself. He's a very honest pony, often honest to the point of being blunt or tactless. He's rather loyal to the few who call him a friend and show him kindnesses.

 

Descant looks at the world in a different light than many ponies, and therefore sees things in a different way. He therefore has a peculiar sense of humor, and often is misunderstood. Oftentime, when a conversation bores him, he'll stop paying attention to it somewhat and get lost in a daydream, and he usually hums to himself when he does so. He generally has a cheerful disposition and outlook, and many ponies consider him naive, but he's not really.

 

He's rather awkward, as I've said, and therefore has trouble opening up to others, and making his true feelings known, and often just pretends to be cheerful when he's really upset. He has a hard time tolerating lies, and ponies who he knows are dishonest. Therefore, he does not like being lied to. And even though he sometimes pretends otherwise, he can be insecure, and heavily relies upon those few friends he has.

 

 

 

 

Welp, that about sums up what I've decided about Descant so far. If you have any evaluations, or suggestions on how to better him or whatever, I'd be more than happy to hear them.

 

I'd also love to hear better ideas for a name, if anyone has any. I'm not quite sure if Descant fits.

Or other ideas for a cutie mark, maybe? Anything, really. Literally, any feedback or evaluation would be appreciated.

Where to start? I like his colour scheme and cutie mark. I've never heard of the term descant before, but it sounds cool.

And for personality, I think it's good. Lies are something that I can't tolerate either, so I think it's a good attribute!

 

I'm not good at this kind of thing, so I'll wrap it up for now. Though I do have one question... can he play several instruments at once? Pinkie Pie may be able to drive out the parasprites, but that must be tiring for just one pony.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that playing multiple instruments at once requires a certain disregard of the laws of physics that everypony but Pinkie Pie lacks. Descant is probably quite as skilled at playing his instruments individually as Pinkie is playing them all at the same time. Which is actually pretty dang good, it puts him on a similar level of musicianship as Octavia. However, seeing how Octavia is based in Canterlot and Descant is not, the friendly rivalry they held in their youth has softened into, perhaps not a close friendship, but a good one. Also, I'd like to add that while Pinkie has the skill to play multiple instruments at once, she's probably not particularly great at playing them one at a time. That's just Pinkie logic for you.

 

The term Descant refers to the counter-melody often utilized in tenor roles, and as my IRL main instrument is a French Horn, I play counter-melody on a tenor pitch quite often. I think the term is actually pronounced (Dehs-kint), but I prefer to read it as (Days-Cahnt)(Almost French-sounding), as it sounds nicer that way.

 

Thanks for the response! Personally, I need to hear what people have to say about it before I can actually commit to it. I'm just weird like that, I guess. But seriously, thanks!
