So it's very strange. Maybe the creators just thought no one would really take notice of it.
Zygen 6,066 November 18, 2012 Share November 18, 2012 I think its really just because it would be strange to see a town full of specifically designed things for ponys. Sure it would make more sense, but I kinda like seeing ponys in more humanish towns, and plus its a cartoon. I just would find it a bit strange to see a town designed with things specificly for ponys. I know it sounds weird, but I think it would look almost alien. Fluttermena 1,223 November 18, 2012 Share November 18, 2012 It's probably because it helps the viewers relate better to the characters, it's nothing new when it comes to fiction featuring non-human characters: everything looks like what humans would use. It's just a case of the writers of the show keeping this familliar: that's why the ponies have things like saddles... It's a good example of "Most writers are human" http://tvtropes.org/...WritersAreHuman
Party Cannon 876 November 18, 2012 Share November 18, 2012 (edited) I want to answer this question, but it really doesn't need an answer. It's a show. A cartoon. How come Bugs Bunny lived in a hole in the ground but drove cars, used the telephone, fired guns, etc.? True, he interacted in a human built world, and was drawn with human like hands, but in both MLP and Looney Tunes, logic is left at the door. Good funny philosophical question you have, but finding a serious answer is futile. Finding the logic in the illogical...no... Flutterdasher 115 November 18, 2012 Share November 18, 2012 I think its because they have kind of humanized the ponies. Sure they have hooves, but they seem to be able to grip things, which really shouldn't be possible with hooves. It just adds more depth to the characters.
Kelvocity 211 November 18, 2012 Share November 18, 2012 Because we're humans, not ponies. This show was originally kinda made for kids, and it might be too complicated with gadgets made for ponies. ...And maybe they just didn't have time to reinvent every gadget and gizmo and technological creation they needed to use in the show just for use by pony? Maybe that's the answer? Although, in reality, the thought either didn't occur to them, or was too time-consuming. 1 Wait for it...
Circadian 1,273 November 18, 2012 Share November 18, 2012 that's why the ponies have things like saddles... That made me laugh out loud, but I always figured she made the saddle for Spike. Riding bareback can't be very comfortable considering Spike has scales. Eh, poor choice of words. Okay, I'm going to stop tying stuff before this gets any creepier.

I know that looking for a serious answer is futile but that doesn't mean it'll stop me from trying. I know that it could be easily explained but it's still a fun discussion to have. Especially since while the writers ARE human that hasn't stopped people from making other fiction with nonhuman characters using nonhuman things. But of course, it's not like the intended demographic of the show would make as much of a fuss about it as we would but it's still a good question to raise.
poniesforfun 716 November 19, 2012 Share November 19, 2012 They seem to change it up. Sometimes they're pulling wagons and carriages, bucking apples and carrying objects with their mouth but next thing you know they're writing, playing instruments and operating a sewing machine.
The Weapon 168 November 19, 2012 Share November 19, 2012 Tvtropes has an army of WMGs over this. One of them is that Equestria is a world-size park created by humans or a humanlike species (Elves?), and it was abandoned. The ponies, seeing no reason to change, just rolled with it and continued making human-useable objects out of familiarity. Further on, it was just tradition. Through a massive stroke of luck, nopony has bothered to question this, and enough species with human-enough hand types existed to keep the tradition on through sheer by-the-way-international-dragon-visitors trains of thought. Another key component about the WMG is that Celestia and Luna knew what exactly happened (Presumably after the old management failed and/or left, they were the backup/security/repairmares-with-Elements-of-Harmony and picked up ASAP to fix all the damage), and haven't told anyone because it would probably be embarrassing and possibly reveal a lot of should-not-be-known things leading up to things like Discord, Nightmare Moon, Sombra, Chrysalis, why exactly the Gala is that freaking boring, and many other things. Dusty Soul 2,611 November 19, 2012 Share November 19, 2012 Because with ponies logic is thrown out the window. I mean it offers some hilarity, and it allows people to relate to characters easier, because you wouldn't usually see someone relate themselves to a human, at least not me. 1 Soundcloud-------------------Facebook---------------------------Youtube
Creamy Arty 6,252 November 19, 2012 Share November 19, 2012 The audience needs to be able to relate to what they're seeing to some extent. That means making things similarly to what we have here. The fact that we've seen ponies grabbing handles with their hooves obviates that human designs are working well for them, even though it doesn't make sense that they can do that. What's weirder is how Pinkie blew into one hoof and caused fingers to pop out of the other one. Hoof fingers: you can't explain that. So why bother trying to explain anything? Kyoshi made this ^^ Come join us on Equestria.tv on Fridays at 6 PM Eastern for our weekly movie nights!

What's weirder is how Pinkie blew into one hoof and caused fingers to pop out of the other one. Hoof fingers: you can't explain that. So why bother trying to explain anything? Yes, exactly. The audience has to be able to relate to what they see. Especially since the target audience is about 5 years old. They might not understand that hooves work differently than hands and so they could be confused as to what is what. Not to mention that it's also much easier for the writers/animators than to find a way in which every single instrument could be used with hooves. This is MLP we're talking about, the "world building" is pretty basic. Equestria doesn't have a fully developed history and culture à la Star Wars or Lord of The Rings "There was me, that is Pinkie, and my three droogs, that is Rarity, Rainbow, and Fluttershy, and we sat in the Ponyville Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening." The Weapon 168 November 21, 2012 Share November 21, 2012 Hoof fingers: you can't explain that. So why bother trying to explain anything? Three words: Microscopic hoof cilia. In other words, Equestria's ponies are perfectly capable of forming hoof fingers, it just takes a good deal of effort and is reserved for grasping things those flat hooves shouldn't be able to. Or literally magic marshmallow hooves. Rarity... Or just magic. MAGIC!
