Could you guys do me a favor and pray for me? I feel like I just took a .50 cal sniper rifle round in my soul. :(

Will do it ;)

My prayers are with you!

That is a truly fascinating exploration of what has been described as "the mechanics of religion." E.g. how it effects people on a societal and cultural level.

I myself have played (and fallen madly in love with) Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth. While that doesn't explore the mechanics of religion in as deep a way V did, it's refreshing to see an outright sci-fi future where not only has religion remained, in many ways it's evolved.

My favorite faction is actually lead by a Prophet, who's authority stems completely from her follower's belief in her teachings. As you unlock new technologies and wonders (regardless of faction or other choices), many quotes actually start to sound like sermons or appropriations of Old Earth myths that have been carried by the colonists and made to fit into the belief systems native to their new home.

Of course we will. What's wrong, is everything OK? :(

Here's a question, anyone play any video games you thought had some strong Christian or at least religious elements to them?

The Halo franchise?

Spartan John 117

The Ark

The Flood

Daniel 11:21-45 pretty much is the plot to Halo 2

steel, what's up? If you need to talk, I'm here (sort of).

Of course we will. What's wrong, is everything OK? :(

I'm a little better now. It was a rough night. I don't want to drag my problems here explicitly as this thread has been otherwise one of the best examples of both Christian and Brony etiquette and conduct. So I don't want to invite any conflict here in this thread.

Praying for you Steel. Hope everything is alright.

Said a prayer for you Steel. I sincerely hope whatever went wrong fixes itself!

See above:

I agree but I almost feel like those elements don't belong in the franchise. I have strongly mixed feelings on the Halo games. The bulk of my issues stemming from the UNSC.

Let me just put this here so everyone knows.

I'm feeling much better now. My parents and God were with me.

In this ordeal though, my trial created it's own solution.

Someone called me a servant of the Anti-Christ. No, this is not hyperbole or exaggeration, I was charged as a follower of the Dark Prince, the Adversary, the Parties what Slumber.

Hence the "soul took a .50 cal sniper round" comment. That's what it felt like. Especially painful was this was after I extended a hand in forgiveness to my accuser, and help his denomination in no contempt. Naturally, I thought such would be returned. It was not in the worst way possible.

Yet though, after my initial and I admit now completely selfish cry for help, many of you have sent me PMs of prayers and concern. You have proven my accuser wrong and alleviated my pain. All of us Christians, all of us Bronies. No matter our differences, we recognize that what we have in common is far larger than how we are different.

Love. Yes, love and tolerance.

Thank you all and God bless you.  :)

Halo is so not-uncommon that Biblical references to make something sound mythology-y is rapidly becoming cliché in modern media

I actually kind of like that though. I like to see Christian themes and iconography used in media and stories. That's partly why I asked the question in the first place. (I'm a writing student, I plan to use faith and religion as prominent themes in my stories.)

Also, I don't see how Daniel's prophecy of Alexander the Great's conquest of Medo-Persia connects to the alien faction The Covenant.

To Bungie's credit, I think that's supposed to be referring to Master Chief fighting the Covenant, which are in turn meant to partly be the "Persians" to Chief and his kind's "Spartans." (Hence the naming convention.)

Again though, this creates a dissonance for me because you have all this Christian symbolism and even parallels but they are in a setting where they don't belong. The Heinleinian, Starship Troopers military state fighting the alien hordes for the fate of humanity and the themes of Judeo-Christian prophecy fully realized in a far advanced future simply don't mesh for me.

The former was done better IN Starship Troopers the film. As well as Ender's Game, X-COM, and there were even shades of it in Independence Day. While the ladder was done much better in Bladerunner, Deus Ex, and even Fullmetal Alchemist.

Do any of you think that women should be silent in the churches, as stated in First Corinthians? Or was that a cultural thing? I'm undecided.

Cultural thing. I mean, if that were the case, more than half the gospel readings I've ever heard wouldn't be the same.

I usually feel selfish asking for people to pray for me but...could you if that's alright? I feel absolutely heartbroken and I'm finding it hard to pray even for myself...

I don't really wanna talk about the details...I'm probably being stupid anyway, I dunno...

Of course my friend. If you DO ever wish to talk about it, there's always our PM.

I will be praying for you. It's all good if you do not want to talk about it, sometimes we just need some time with ourselves to process our thoughts and feelings. I hope things get better.

a born and raised catholic here

(Fought about my religion stance with my parents for years, but i stopped fighting and accepted it

I will respect you regardless of what religion you are or not. But I agree that it is not cool to be forced into something. Anyways, maybe not fighting it is better for now in order to keep harmony at home, who knows. At any rate, I will also be praying for you.

And welcome to this thread :)

Fellow Catholic represent!

That is a shame that your parents didn't respect your choice though. If you ask me, you shouldn't "start fighting it again" as much as make your own choice.

Reasons for your belief, other than the culture of today differing with the Bible text?

I struggle a lot with culture vs. literalism in biblical interpetation.

Well I don't think the Bible is meant to be taken literally in the first place, so that goes a long way to do with it. Second, if something in the Bible conflicts with Jesus' actual teachings and actions, then I consider it up for interpretation at best and dismissible at worst.

The Bible is important, but it's merely a record of what is actually important.

Are you saying that women speaking in churches is contrary to Jesus' teachings? Sorry if I assumed wrong, but you aren't actually answering my original post's question about women in churches, so I'm trying to read between the lines.

By the way, your view of the Bible aligns closer to Orthodox thinking than Catholic/Protestant.

I'm saying that Jesus would not discriminate against anyone by race, gender, or creed in His actions. So why should we exclude women from participating in mass or speaking their mind in religious matters? Because Even was tempted before Adam?

Don't know what to tell you, I was raised Catholic and I speak what I've learned in mass. I am loyal to and consider myself of, the Church of Rome.
