planning Ordinary Romance/slice of life RP.

I've seen a good deal of romance RPs floating around, but they all eventually devolve into "Ultra-powerful alicorn & friends" so I've decided to start my own thread.

Rule #1: No Alicorns.

I know this rule seems draconian, but alicorns always end up hijacking the plot and becoming the center of attention. Speaking of hijacking...

Rule #2: No hijacking the plot.

We don't want there to be a main character. Everyone should get their chance to shine and/or get together with someone. It's no fun watching some Mary Sue get the hot mare, save the world from destruction and become king of existence.

Rule #3: Only use ponies that could realistically be in the show.

No, you can't be an alicorn. No, you can't be a fallen angel with a light sword and a destiny. No, you can't be a Mary Sue, or have weird eyes, or weird wings, or any other sore-thumb of a feature. (Also, I'm not saying you can't have big wings, or two different colored eyes, just not "Laser-x-ray eyes" or "metal steampunk superwings") Griffons, donkeys, exceptionally tall or short ponies, ex-military, LGBT, all fine, in fact, encouraged, but remember, this is a slice of life RP.

Rule #4: No major action scenes.

Now, I'm not saying that we all have to be pacifists. That would be absurd. Small squabbles or hoof-fights are fine. What I AM saying is no city-wide epic battles, or face-offs with the dark-warrior from legend. SLICE. OF. LIFE.

Rule #5: Don't "overuse lemons"

In the past, this hasn't been a problem, but I'll take a preventative measure anyway. In an RP, lemons are like rocket launchers. A powerful tool, but one that you only use when needed. In another okayish analogy, overuse lemons, and the RP becomes sour. (For clarity, using lemons means the same thing as "taking a tumble in the hay") Also, KEEP IT SFW. I cannot stress this enough. Innuendo is about as far as you can go unless you want the thread locked. So, for emphisis, KEEP IT SFW.

Suggestion #1: Play somepony who is attracted to stallions.

The #1 problem I see with Romance RPs is that there is an over-saturation of straight male characters. If you're uncomfortable playing a mare or a gay stallion, I understand, I kind of am myself, but If need be, I'll bite the bullet and play a character I wouldn't normally play, and you should too. READ: suggestion. I'm not telling you to change your character if you REALLY don't want to, it's just something to think about.

 

So, you may wonder why I prefaced this with "Planning". Well, that's because I want other peoples imput. This is my first time running an RP, so I want some more experienced people to help. Plus, if there's one rule everyone want's why not add it. Well, I look forward to your application and suggestions.

Hmm... Setting... Uh... Ponyville? In the winter? SOL RPs really don't need long-running storylines, just a kicking off point, so I'll go with something like a big storm wreaking up a park, and the Characters meet up there, having been there for one reason or another (Public service, ect).

I've already made it clear that all "Lemons" have to be SFW, but as for the tropical island or mountainside village thing, that's... not a bad idea. We might do that. I kind of want to keep it in familiar territory, but just having it in a different town might be a good idea. Anyone else think so?

The island doesn't even have to be tropical. It can also be some pony equivalent to Greenland or Australia. Whichever setting you choose is fine by me.

Eh, I still have my vote on mountain resort.  It seems more... relevant to the roleplay.

But hey, I've never actually been in a romance roleplay, even though I've wanted to.

This RP is showing signs of promise. I wouldn't mind joining this as my main and only OC, Chocolate. While I'm all for the mountain resort idea, I also like the idea of a blizzard keeping all of the chars huddled in one place. It will be easier to keep the theme and setting constant.

That's a good idea. All the chars go to mountain resort for one reason or another, and an avalanche causes the one road to the resort to be overrun by snow and boulders, so everyone who was already there (obviously including the OCs) get a free stay until the road is cleared.
