gaming Youtube Giveaways, Thoughts?

I see giveaways on loads of YouTube videos, many of the top YouTubers give away stuff for commenting and subscribing to them, Philip Defranco gives away something on every one of his videos.

 

So, what is everyone's thoughts on Giveaways? are they a good system for rewarding the viewers or are they a cheap way to buy subscribers?

I think they're both. Cheap way to buy subscribers, and gifts to the fans. I know several Lets Players who don't away gifts but still get so much love from his/her fans, and don't even need to give things away. The funny thing i've noticed is that these lets players always have a lot less subscribers than the ones who do give things away

*shrug* It is really up to the Youtuber, I guess. I sometimes use sneak peeks of new chapters to people who comment/review on my stories a lot to show my appreciation, so for me I see it as a reward. People give stuff away all the time, right?

I started doing it to gain a few more subs, hence why i give away things at certain milestones, i have 48 subscribers but 27,500 views, whereas i see loads of people with hundreds of subscribers and less than 1,000 views.
