Decmber 20th, 2012 was the 25th Anniversary of the Phantasy Star series in Japan. The first game was released on December 20th, 1987 for the Sega Master System. There have been a number of titles released under the name since then.

 

 

Please join in as we reminisce about Phantasy Star! Who else here is a fan of Phantasy Star? Whether it is Universe, Online or the original 4 games? ^^ And will anyone be playing Phantasy Star Online 2?

Hooolly god yes! I absolutely love the Phantasy Star Series (excluding PSU, which admittedly wasn't too bad but there was something about it that put me off).

 

I will still occasionally play Blue Burst on an SCHTHACK server and I am really looking forward to the US release of PSO2. I would continue playing on the Japanese version but they keep banning me.

I still have it a goal in the back of my mind to finish Phantasy Star IV. That game is amazing, well beyond its time, but so long.

 

I'm also looking forward to Phantasy Star Online 2 after how many hours I sunk into PSO, but I'm a little worried about how closely it treads to p2w.

I like the first two Phantasy Star's quite a bit.  The first one for its difficulty, the second one for its cool graphics and music.  Oddly, I'm not a fan of IV.

I agree with you, sadly PSU was not all it was cracked up to be. I remember picking it up from Gamestop and being sorely disappointed there was no multi-player offline play like in PSO. Also the Phantasy Star Portable games are REALLY good, they are what PSU should have been. I was also playing the PSO2 Japanese version and they didn't ban me. I'm sorry to hear it happened to you though. I cannot wait for the US launch~

PS4 was and still is, an amazing title. I'm surprised at the lack of love that title gets whenever old school RPGs are mentioned or brought up. But what is P2w?

Really? You are the first person I have heard say that, usually everyone likes 1, 2, and 4 but don't care for 3. Phantasy Star 3 had some great ideas but they weren't implemented too well imo. How come you didn't care for 4 if I may ask?

Oh, I hate III, don't get me wrong.  I'd much rather play IV than III.  But IV . . . I perfer the challenge that I and II had and... I dunno, IV just didn't feel as special to me.  I didn't like the graphics and feel as much.  It was an ok game, but I'd rather play I or II.

 

That said, I haven't beaten any of em!

I love the Phantasy Star series and always will!

 

I can't wait for PSO2 to be released for the rest of world so I can go back to the amazing times I've had in the series<3 (I've played the japanese version of the game with an english patch and it was so fun @_@)

I've also played on the Japanese servers of PSO2, that game is too much fun! Also what class do you play? I play Hunter/Fighter class as a human though back in the PSU days I used to be a beast hunter.

I played the Japanese servers shortly after release (and in both closed and open betas) but haven't been back for a while. I got used to having an English patch in beta, and only found one for the full release recently. I should check it out again, I remember they had planned to add a big content update toward the end of 2012.

I haven't had the chance to play the older ones, but I absolutely loved Phantasy Star Online!   I put countless hours into that game! One of my favorite games!  I played through Phantasy Star Universe a couple times as well, it was ok but not as good in my opinion. Also, thank you for mentioning Phantasy Star Online 2! I hadn't heard of it before and now I'm very excited for it!

As soon as the US version is announced I will start a group for us all to play together! Ponies in space~ Or Pony Star Online. :3

The big content update was the new areas and the final boss for Episode 1. Yes, they just finished episode 1 of PSO2 over in Japan and now they are supposedly working on Episode 2 as we speak. Meanwhile, we still haven't even gotten Episode 1 yet.

PSU was not as good as it could have been but it was still fun with friends. Just look at this video and see how much PSO has changed in 2.

I'm a little worried about PSO2 from what I've been reading. Some of the stuff exclusive to premium players is stuff that, in my opinion, should be in any game like this by default. Player-to-player trading, for example.
