The large stallion had been standing in front of the door for a while, his nerves kept getting to him. What if he stood out more than he normally did? He couldn't bring himself to go inside and get stared at like he normally did. It was just then he heard a voice come from behind him.

Whirl Wake looked around the garden for someone to talk to. A large, brown stallion caught his eye, one without anyone to chat with. He trotted towards the entrance where he was standing and tried his best to introduce himself. "Hey!" He said cheerfully. "You looking for somebody?" Whirl Wake got closer to the pony and greeting him. "I'm Wind. What's your name?" He marveled at the size of the stallion as he got closer.

The huge stallion looked over the grey pegasus that approached him and he gave a light smile. "I'm not looking for anyone in particular..." He answered gazing back to the door. When the pegasus introduced himself as Wind, Chocolate turned to fully acknowledge him. "My name is Chocolate." He said taking an interest in the friendly face. Nothing romantic or anything, he was just happy to have someone to talk to. "I'm sorry to ask but... what does one do at these events?"

Whirl Wake laughed. "You tell me, it's my first time too."  He pointed over to the gardens, where everypony was socializing and eating. "The party is mainly in the garden, it would seem." He turned back to Chocolate. "So, where are you from?" Whirl Wake tried being as friendly as possible. He didn't like it.

Whirl Wake laughed. "You tell me, it's my first time too."  He pointed over to the gardens, where everypony was socializing and eating. "The party is mainly in the garden, it would seem." He turned back to Chocolate. "So, where are you from?" Whirl Wake tried being as friendly as possible. He didn't like it.

The dark brown earth pony looked to where he had pointed and nodded. "I see. It would seem we both have something in common then." He said looking a bit troubled. It didn't take long for the pegasus to start asking questions about him, not that he minded. "I'm from the outskirts of the Everfree Forest, despite its reputation, it is a nice quiet place to live. Where are you from?" He asked before noticing the pegasus seemed to be bothered by something. "Are you alright?"

Whirl Wake shook his head. "Huh? Oh, I'm from here in Canterlot, I study medicine." He said. "The Everfree forest, huh? I've never actually been to Ponyville, so I don't know what it's like."

 

 "Are you alright?" 

 

Whirl Wake smiled. "Yeah, I'm fine." He said calmly. "I've just never been to something like this. Not exactly my thing." He looked over to a table in the garden where a pony was skillfully squeezing cups of cider. "You wanna go get a cup of cider?" Whirl Wake offered.

Asnee stifled a giggle when Joan said about convincing the citizens about eating little filly. He grinned and shook his head slightly, "It's not a big deal. It was an honour to help the Royal Bodyguards with my humble skill."

 

"Glad to hear that you enjoy the party Miss Joan," Asnee remained smiling as he talked, "Actually I have eaten, but we can go to get some food if you haven't eaten yet."

The large stallion looked a little surprised when the pegasus mentioned studying medicine. "Is that so?" He said eyeing his cutie mark. "I suppose that makes sense." He said scratching his large hoof on the ground.

"I've just never been to something like this. Not exactly my thing." He looked over to a table in the garden where a pony was skillfully squeezing cups of cider. "You wanna go get a cup of cider?" Whirl Wake offered.

Normally the large brown earth pony didn't feel at ease around others but Whirl seemed a little different. He felt like he could develop a friendship with him. "Cider sounds nice. But... only if you're buying." He joked joining him to have a friendly glass.

"Oh, the archivists find out more duties for me every day: Apparently the captain of Nightwatch doubles as Princess Luna's personal bodyguard, herald, adviser in matters of the state  and last week we found out that I'm also castellan of Everfree Castle, or what's left of it at any rate.

For now we we're just focusing on getting the Nightwatch to work properly and convincing the citizens that pterasi don't eat little fillies. Master Hoof here has helped us set up a mechanism for opening and closing the shutters of our tower according to the time of day. We arerather sensitive of direct sunlight you see."

 

 

"Oh, cool." Supernova replied with an unsure look and kicked the ground a little. So, she's a vampire or something? And how come she doesn't really smile? It looks like she's about to but doesn't... He shrugged a bit in doubt. Eh, it probably doesn't matter.

 

 

Again Joan could feel the beginning of a blush. Good grief get it together! She smiled, taking care to not show any teeth this time.

"Oh, it has been delightful. I must confess, I am still new to this kind of event. I just wish I would have thought about grabbing something to eat before coming here. The two of you did not coincidentally happen to pass a buffet?"

 

Smiling, Supernova jumped up in excitement. "I just happened to! Let's go get something, huh?"

"Cider sounds nice. But... only if you're buying." He joked joining him to have a friendly glass.

Whirl Wake laughed at the joke and tossed two bits onto the table. "One cup of cider, please." He turned back to Chocolate."So, what brings you to this party anyways?" Whirl Wake grabbed the cup of cider from the brewer and took a sip. "That is, if don't mind me asking."

Star was running late, she could tell by the stars. If she was on time, orion wouldn't be that high up in the sky.

 

Star threw on her aqua dress and grabbed her pink and aqua mask and ran out the door, trying to hurry to the party. When Star got there, she wasn't really sure what to do so she stood near the edge, looking up occasionally.

Chocolate dropped a few bits on the table then followed Whirl's lead taking a mug from the brewer and bowing his head politely before carrying on his conversation with the pegasus.

 

"So, what brings you to this party anyways?" Whirl Wake grabbed the cup of cider from the brewer and took a sip. "That is, if don't mind me asking."

The stallion looked up to the sky thoughtfully as he tried to come up with an answer. "I'm told I work too hard and that I need to go out and socialize more." He said before realizing Whirl probably didn't know just who he was referring to. "...My boss that is. "That's the reason I am here. And you?" He asked noticing a light yellow pegasus mare dressed in aqua dress running towards the party. She seemed to have been running late and now looked lost. "Think we should say something to that mare over there? She seems... lost." He noted rubbing under his muzzle with his large hoof.

 

When Star got there, she wasn't really sure what to do so she stood near the edge, looking up occasionally.

"Excuse me, miss." Chocolate said deeply as he walked up to her hoping he didn't scare her away or make her nervous with his size. "My friend and I couldn't help but notice you looked lost. Did you need help finding anything?" He held out his hoof to her and smiled lightly. "My name is Chocolate, and my friend here is Whirl."

 "Think we should say something to that mare over there? She seems... lost." He noted rubbing under his muzzle with his large hoof.

Whirl Wake looked over to the mare by the entrance. "I'd say so. Sure!" He trotted over with Chocolate to the pony, a scent coming over him as he walked beside him. Is that.. Chocolate? He thought.

 

 

"Excuse me, miss." Chocolate said deeply as he walked up to her hoping he didn't scare her away or make her nervous with his size. "My friend and I couldn't help but notice you looked lost. Did you need help finding anything?" He held out his hoof to her and smiled lightly. "My name is Chocolate, and my friend here is Whirl."

Whirl Wake waved at the mare, glancing at her cutie mark and back to her. "What's your name?" He said, his friendly tone of voice growing on him as he used it throughout the party. Suddenly he realized something. How did Chocolate know my real name? I told him it was Wind... Whirl Wake shook it off and scratched his neck with a hoof.

Joan finished her glass and, on second thought, refilled it. The alcohol did seem to make socializing easier.

"Splendid, consider yourselves temporarily drafted as guard auxiliaries for supply, I'm pretty sure I can do that. Anyway, lead the way, Mr. Nova."

A tall stallion approached Star, intoroducing himself as Chocolate. Then A pony by the name of Whirl came, and glanced at her cutie mark. 'Oh no... he knows that I'm a geek!'

 

"My name's Star Gazer... and I don't need any help finding anything, thank you." Star did a nervous smile and twiddled her hooves

Whirl Wake smiled an looked into her eyes. "Oh, well are you looking for someone?" He saw her nervousness tells and spoke again. "That is, if you're okay with me asking. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, I'm just here to make friends." Whirl blew his mane out of his face and smiled. I guess being friendly isn't that hard. He thought to himself.

As Supernova was leading the way, he couldn't help but think about Joan's odd feel to her. How come she looks like she's going to smile but doesn't...? I don't know why, but it's bothering me a bit. He looked over at the mysterious mare. Something about her... She seems to be a bit reluctant when she talks. Does she not want to be here? Maybe i'm just over-thinking this...

Finally. Joan overtook Supernova on the last steps to the buffet and took in the displayed baked goods.

Hay muffins, hayfritters, haypie; how can they eat that stuff?

Finally she spotted a raspberry strudel and speared it with her free wing. She bit off half of it at once before recalling where she was. Chewing as ladylike as she could, she took another look at her companions: Supernova seemed to have something on his mind. Unlike Asnee, who radiated calmness and self control, the pegasus never seemed to stand completely still. She knew the type; ponies who were usually law abiding citizens, but would take "Stop in the name of the law!" as a race challenge. Still, there was something that seemed familiar about him in specific.

She swallowed the content of her mouth.

"Mr .Nova, do you by any chance have any relatives in the Guard?"

"Well, i'm glad you asked!" Supernova exclaimed while chewing his food, but still trying to be gentlemanly. "My dad just happened to be a Captain of the Royal Guard at one point! That's just one of the many reasons he's my hero. But enough about me, how about you? Any of your relatives happen to be in the Guard or related to royalty in any way?"

 

Now you're doing it, Supernova! Find something you have in common.

oh really? He must have been Shinning Armors predecessor and now he's retired to be a prince. We're really burning through them. As for me, there hasn't been a Nightwatch for a thousand years, so it's a bit hard to prove anything, but I like to think, I'm continuing a family tradition."

She finished her strudel and washed it down with the punch, swaying for a moment before regaining her balance.

"Oh, excuse me. So, Mr. Hoof any famous ancestors in your family?"

Asnee grinned to the question. Though he didn't really like the topic, a discussion about family always got his interest. Still grinning, he slightly nodded several times, "Ah, yes. There's a grandfather of my grandfather who was famous. He was a martial art master. He developed our family martial art and wrote a book about it for the next generations, so the tradition wouldn't extinct," He paused and stole a glance at Supernova, "But he was never interested to join the guard or something like that."

"No, it's okay. Thank you though." While Star was enjoying the semi-uninvited company, she honestly didn't know anypony there. 'Well, that's what you get for attracting attention to yourself by arriving late' Spark thought bitterly.

 

Unsure of what to say, Star looked upwards and was tempted to tell Swirl the time by only the stars. She had been able to do that little trick from when she was a filly. She could even do down to the minute

Getting nervous at the silence, Spark decided to attempt to make conversation

 

"So.. heh heh... how are... umm... things?" Spark asked both ponies. 'Smooth. You're such a social mastermind' She thought bitterly to herslef. As long as these ponies didn't call her a 'geek' or a 'nerd', they were alreight to her.

This shook Joan out of the fuzzy place the punch had taken her. Suddenly the whole atmosphere seemed a lot lessenchanting to her. She could feel her muscles tense under the dress,

"Oh, you don't approve of the guard, Mister Hoof?"

She was surprised how hurt that simple statement made her feel.

"It sure is. That's the brightest I've ever seen Piscis Austrinus in a while. I was raised in Ponyville, but I moved to Canterlot afew years back." Star said. She was starting to loosen up, but she wasn't fully relaxed. She saw him glance at her cutie mark and she grew nervous. What was he going to think? Was he going to question why she moved?

Whirl Wake smiled. "Cool! I'm from here in Canterlot. Never been to Ponyville myself." He shifted his hooves, loosening down and letting his wings straighten. Whirl Wake never took the time to realize how beautiful she was, and looking at her now revealed that. "Are you related to any royals?" This slipped out of his mouth awkwardly, wondering why he said that.
