That's not bad at all. Furthermore, nobody but Popeye likes spinach, so that's funny as well. Still, don't sell yourself short, this is pretty good, and as an added bonus, it's funny.

Figured you guys should know that I didn't draw the lineart for these pictures, m'kay? All I did was color them in GIMP, and I really don't know how the hay to use the GIMP program I just downloaded. Yeah. And I don't have a mouse. So generally, I'm using new software, on a new laptop, on somebody else's lineart, and...well, yeah. That.

Here's another one, of Bon-Bon and Lyra. I can has concrit?

Its not really that bad to be totally honest. Its actually pretty good coloring. I mean the tips of the hair at some points I can see white where its not colored, but overall its pretty good besides the couple little missed parts.

Your not terrible, i mean you didn't go out the lines from what I can tell.

Also I actually like spinach, if its not ground or mashed or whatever. :P.

@Zygen, thanks! I For some reason, especially when I'm working at different opacities, the tips of the mane/tail get missed. I forget to go back with a smaller brush. Attention to detail isn't my special strong suit, but I'm trying to get better. (Hence posting it here.)

Does anyone have any GIMP tips? *Pinkie eyes*

You're coloring is smooth, and yet it feels fresh.  I'm not familiar with GIMP, I use Photoshop CS5.1

Before coloring, you should try to apply a slight blur the the image and adjust the levels so that you only see black and white.  I noticed some thin white lines between the pencil marks and your coloring.  Doing this technique will get rid of that.  Keep up the awesome coloring :)

If that's bad by your standards, then holy balls, you have high standards for coloration. :x

And I agree with Pinkie, spinach is disgusting. And does not work at all for me like it does for Popeye. :c

I loved watching Popeye growing up, but no matter how much i watched it, it never made me want to eat spinach. If spinach somehow managed to make someone stronger, they wouldn't be able to keep any in stores.

Thanks! That's great advice. How does the Photoshop work out for you? I downloaded GIMP because it's free, and I'd have to pay for Photoshop, but if it works really well, then I may have to change my coloring habits. ^_^

This is another lineart coloring, which I had to color. Because...Scootaloo. Yes. Sweetie Belle is my favorite CMC, but Scoot's relationship is RD is just...augh. Preciously priceless.

I completely suck at drawing lineart, but I am trying to get better. My main love is coloring, and I'm trying to do something other than flats although its not working out at all like I want it to. :/ happy.png

In my experience, drawing is considerably harder than coloring, but that's coming from a guy who's pretty good at coloring (but can't draw well to save his life), and you're matching the colors to the originals very well.

I know ways of getting Photoshop for free ;)

If you are interested, just PM me and I can help you out.

The interface is similar, but Photoshop destroys GIMP in the long run and is well worth watching tutorials on Youtube.

I think a lot of your problem may be that you're trying to color in a pencil sketch on a computer. These two media don't tend to go very well together. I have a couple of suggestions on how to fix this. First, if you intend to color a picture, try inking it, first. Fine point felt-tip pens tend to work well for this. Or if these are inked pictures, I recommend cleaning up the line art a little bit. Make thicker lines when you ink, and fill in some of the whiter areas. The problem I think you're running into is that the colors of the computer are much more stark than your line art, so the coloring turns out sort of awkward.

Let me show you a picture I colored on computer from pencil versus ink. It's the same picture that I just took the time to ink afterward.

Pencil

Ink

Granted, my pencil line art wasn't as well defined as yours, but you see where inking can make a difference. It better defines where one color is supposed to end and the next is supposed to begin.

Another way you can improve the way your coloring looks would be to re-outline your original line art on the computer, and then color your computer line-art. I haven't really tried this, other than minor touch-ups or clean-ups, and I think that it would probably be easiest if you had a tablet. Not that I'm saying you should run out and buy one just to try this style of coloring, but if you have one at your disposal, it might be good to try.

And I think your actual coloring is pretty good. It's just that the computer coloring doesn't go very well with your pencil sketches. Keep at it! smile.png

Well what I do for coloring when I draw stuff on GIMP is that I just go over the outline of the picture and then fill it in with the bucket fill tool. However that works alot better for me because I draw my picture and already have my picture with layers setup so I can not actually fall out the lines.
