G1 Derpy FTW 134 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 My main concern is the Princess's name I understand why Princess Luna has her name since she is in charge of Lunar events...etc but Princess Celestia's name has nothing to do with the Sun?! Celestia is all about the Sky & Heavens & Astronomy and the Universe all together and I can see where they drew those parallels but it doesn't really relate to her responsibility for raising the Sun. Shouldn't her name have more heliocentric/solar properties and what not? I mean her cutie mark is a Sun for crying out loud! I might just be thinking way to hard about it but it seems like it would make a little more sense... maybe?
Lisa 5,553 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 I don't care. xD I guess when the writers were creating Celestia's name, they thought of a name that made her responsible of the Sun and Moon. Then they were to dumb to realise she is actually just initially responsible for the Sun. Meh, I don't care about it, I dislike Celestia. Princess Luna is best princess! :3 ~Luna
G1 Derpy FTW 134 March 26, 2013 Author Share March 26, 2013 Giirrrllll~ You are so true! they need to have more episodes with Luna she only appeared in 9 out of 65 episodes thats just cruel! Luna is just as important as Celestia, I think the Ponies take Luna and being able to sleep for granted! Haha
Zygen 6,066 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 Well idk I suppose they just wanted clever names relating to the sky and such, Maybe they couldn't think of anything that sounded good having to do with the sun, so they picked Celestia. She technically did have the sun and moon under her control for like a thousand years really. I like the name Celestia better then something like Princess Solar or something . However Princess Luna works fine as a name aswell. I don't think their name always has to have to do with what they do necessarily. Atleast maybe not entirely. Maybe its just got to do with Celestia being Twilights teacher and the more elder acting of the two sisters idk. Twilight means like dawn and dusk, but we haven't seen Twilight do anything with the sun or the moon ever so yeah idk. It doesn't bother me much overall, i think their names fit them well. 1 Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Rainbow Dash Loyalty 1,275 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 In my opinion, I prefer the name 'Princess Celestia' rather than Princess Solar or something but that's just my opinion xPNot sure why they named her that though, maybe theres more to Celestia than just raising the Sun. ~Signature created by Chaotic Discord~
hawkflame 3,310 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 My own fanon/headcanon for this:She took up the name Celestia after she gained responsibility over the sun *and* the moon after banishing Nightmare Moon/Luna, and it just stuck after 1000 years. ...okay, I just made that up on the spot. Mightymags 1,053 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 My guess is that it really has nothing to do with the creators not thinking about that. Celestia is going to be a more unique and catchy name to the children the tv show is targeted toward. Luna just happened to already work, but Celestia was probably just chosen because they liked the way the name sounds, like it's regal.
Pilot 40 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 (edited) Well, I suppose her name fits as she controls the most prominent heavenly body in Equestria, the sun. Something that is "celestial" is a heavenly body or an angel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celestial Edited March 26, 2013 by ThePilotGuy http://i.imgur.com/Y7DbzpO.png
G1 Derpy FTW 134 March 26, 2013 Author Share March 26, 2013 None the less you do have a point, There intentions are very vague though. They had an easy way to create a name based on a Sun pun maybe their next season will shine some light on my predicament. Haha
dekutree64 713 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 I think we've just been spelling her name wrong all this time, and it's actually Princess Solestia Here's a thought. We know Lauren Faust originally wanted her to be Queen Celestia. I wonder if the idea for controlling the sun and moon came before the idea to give her a sister? Could be that she was supposed to be the single and ultimate ruler of the land and heavens. Then again, she did have her sun cutie mark in the concept art sketch. And in any case, I definitely prefer the way things are. "Queen" really does sound too evil, and controlling just the sun makes her less scary, and as of Hearth's Warming Eve, we know that she's not even required to do that, since the unicorns did it before. Much more interesting character when she's not all-powerful, IMO.
MadPointer 75 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 I like the way "Princess Luna" and "Princess Celestia" sound because Russian names usually end with A sound. This is why "Princess Twilight Sparkle" sounds weird to me while I would be fine with "Princess Solestia". By the way "Luna"(stress on the second syllable) means "moon" in Russian so some people might mix up these things. Anyway I don't think their name should always define they are or their role. Concord 1,982 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 Hello! My personal opinion would suggest people to not relate talents to the names to much... Personally, my name, Concord, has nothing to do with my talents... I'm not a grape picker, or a grape farmer Concord actually means harmony from latin, and considering many people say i'm somewhat "Harmonious", it really fited me Plus, i liked the name itself and how it sounded. Different names have different meaning in different cultures... As my example was given with my own name. Personally, what would relate most to me if i had heard the name "Celestia" without knowing anything about MLP, i'd think of Guitar amplifier speakers called "Celestion" Thank you MatrixChicken for the Signature! Names can mean different things. Not all of the names in the show have to be puns, do they? I personally appreciate a break from the whole horse-puns naming type thing with Celestia and Luna, plus, since the name of the sun is Sol, it would be hard to make a name out of that, at least a female name, since Solaris is generally considered a Male name.
NavelColt 22,882 March 26, 2013 Share March 26, 2013 You're right. Celestia is of or relating to the sky. But it doesn't always refer to planets or stars. 'Celestial' is often used to describe higher beings, such as angels or even god(s). Because Celestia is not only the princess of the sun, but is also arguably the show's main adult authority (sorry Luna fans, she's the one who is Twi's teacher, she's got more screen time, wiser, etc. In the scheme of the show, she's the focused authority figure.) it makes sense that she'd have a regal name that describes not only her control of the sun, but also her wisdom, her title as princess and her role in the show overall as a teacher figure.
