Friendship: The Text-Based RPG

Hello everypony,

I am proposing a concept for a half roleplay, half game topic. This is going to be a story played in the style of a text-based RPG.

The concept is simple. I will write a story controlled by you the bronies. Basically I will write a piece of the story, and at the end of the post I will prompt you for something like this:

And you give a response to the prompt. When I visit the topic, I will take the first response from the pony who intervened the least often in the story, and continue the story from there. So it will somehow look like you are playing a text-based rpg. You need to prefix your response with >. You can write whatever you want in the post but I will consider as part of the response what you typed between the > and the first line break after the symbol. It will look like this:

I don't know if this was clear enough, but you'll see when we get started. So, let's start with our story:

 

 

 

A new dawn on Equestria

 

The day is rising. Upon waking up, you feel something is wrong. You open your eyes and realize that your environment looks much more colorful than you are used too. All the details of the room have given place to some cartoonish-like drawing. You rub your face with your hand, but realize it is no longer a hand. No, it is a hoof. A blue colored hoof. You look under the blanket to realize you have four of these things.

Thinking you're still asleep, you decide to get out of bed, hoping you will finally wake up for good. As you stand up, you realize you instinctively stood up on four legs, or rather on four hooves. You try and stand on your hind hooves, but it does not feel natural. Finally you decide to go in the bathroom and take a look in the mirror. You look at yourself only to see a blue cartoon pony with a turquoise-and-white mane.

"Type Writer!!!" shouts a voice behind you. Startled, you turn around and see a green pony with a mane color similar to yours. "Who... Who are you" you baffle, surprised. "You already forgot my name? I'm Lyra" answers the pony in front of you. "What are you?" do you add, still confused by the turns of events.

"What's wrong with you, silly?" said Lyra, confused by your reaction. "Are you alright? You look pale." she added. "WHAT ARE YOU? WHAT AM I?" you repeated, getting a little agitated. "Relax Type Writer" insisted Lyra. "I'm a pony. And you are..."

@everypony: I want to remind everybody of one of the rules that might be unclear. If multiple responses are given, it's the one with the least selected responses that will be selected first. This means that even if Muffin Thief gives another response, anypony else who gives one will have priority over him/her. After if multiple ponies with no selected responses send a response, the earliest will be selected.

@Muffin Thief: This is nothing personal. I just want to encourage as many different ponies as possible to participate in this game.

"a pegasus." replied Lyra. You are even more confused by what she just said. "And what is a pegasus?" you then ask her. "Wow, you really are clueless." responds Lyra, chuckling a little. "A pegasus is a pony who has wings and that can fly". As you become aware of your wings, they become erect, knocking over a few things from the pharmacy.

"Well, aren't YOU happy to see ME!" adds Lyra, as she starts laughing. "Wait! Lyra!" you say, trying to get her attention again. "What happened to my hands? Why do I have hooves?" you ask her, still trying to understand that new world you stumbled in.

You seemingly caught her attention as she looks at you in awe. "Oh, I get it! You are a you-mane, right? I saw a few of those around Ponyville before. They don't stay long thought". Well, that's a relief, you think to yourself as you nod to Lyra. It seems you won't be stuck in this bizzarre world of colorful equines forever. As you ponder your thoughts, Lyra interrupts your thinking: "So, what should we do, you-mane?" she chuckles, before adding "Do want to do something, Type Writer?"

"Well, you could show me around town" you reply to Lyra, thinking that while you're stucked in a world full of friendly ponies, you should make the most of it.

"Sure!" replies Lyra, liking the idea. "Where do you want to go?" she adds. "We could meet my friend BonBon at SugarCube corner. Pinkie is sure to be there too, and if somepony knows something about you-manes, it's her. We could pay a visit to Rarity in Carousel Boutique, but I hear she's busy with a huuuge order of dresses. I could bring you to the orchard, and meet up with Applejack at Sweet Apple Acres. Fluttershy has a nice cottage full of cute animals at the end of town. However it's a little upside-down since Discord moved in. Twilight is in the library, as always, and I think Rainbow Dash is in Cloudsdale right now, but we can't go there so we can forget this one. Well, you could, but I can't so..."

 

"How come?" you ask Lyra, wondering what she meant when she says you only could go. "Well, see Type Writer, Clousdale is in the clouds, like the name says. And I'm an earth pony, so I can't get there, obviously, cause I don't have wings". "Oh" is your response as you consider the places Lyra just told you about. You're cut short in your thinking, as Lyra asks you: "Sooooo, made your choice yet?"

>Relize your cutie mark must mean that you can go into Hammerspace. Obtain mechanical wings from hammerspace, attach them to Lyra, and then go to Cloudsdale.

@Velvet: Well... This is... an interesting response to say the least... Let's see what I can come up with.

You keep thinking about it and an idea pops into your head. You reach in your imaginary back pocket and pull out a gigantic pair of steel wings, then answer Lyra's question: "We're going to Cloudsdale". She looks in awe at the huge appendages, and simply mutters "H-H-How?". "Uh... it's called Hammerspace. It's... kinda complicated" you answer, as you hand her the wings. "Come on, I can't wait to meet that Rainbow Dash of yours" you add, going outside.

You are flying towards Cloudsdale with Lyra when an unidentified object come flying towards you at supersonic speeds. The objects crashes into the Lyra's metal wings and bring both of them to the ground in a big crash. You hurry to the scene to see if both of them are ok.
You see Lyra talking with a cyan pegasus harboring a rainbow colored mane.

"OW! Sorry Lyra! I didn't see you there" says the cyan pony. "It's okay" replies Lyra, "I'm not hurt". "Where did you get these... things? Is it another of Pinkie's contraptions?" asks the pony, surprised at the sight of these enormous wings. "How does it even fly?" she adds. "Oh no, a friend of mine gave these to me" she answers. She then turns to you and presents you to the pegasus: "Type Writer, this is Rainbow Dash. Rainbow Dash, Type Writer". "Hi there new guy!" says Rainbow Dash while you salute her with your hoof.

"What were you two doing?" asks Rainbow Dash, still a little dizzy from the crash. "Oh, we wanted to pay you a visit in Cloudsdale" answers Lyra. "Oh, well I guess that kinda ruins your plans, does it?" she says. "Unless you have another pair of wings in that 'Hackerspade' of yours" responds Lyra. "Well... umm... I don't know" you answer, reaching in your imaginary back pocket again. You pull out a huge hammer from there, to the surprise of both ponies. "I think you should put this back where it came from before you hurt anypony" says Rainbow Dash, as you send this back to the hammerspace. "So, where should we go?" asks Lyra again, Cloudsdale being obviously out of question now.

"I was going to Las Pegasus" says Rainbow Dash. "Wanna come along?" she adds. Lyra objects, telling Rainbow Dash "I can't go to Las Pegasus! You broke the only pair of wings I had!".

"Ditch that loser" says Rainbow Dash, repeating her invitation. She starts to fly away, and you follow her, to Lyra's chagrin. You look away as she starts to cry. Her friend BonBon passes by and starts to console her. "It's okay sweetie, you don't need this weirdo. Come on, we're gonna make some cupcakes". "But he was a you-mane!" cries Lyra, sobbing. "I wanna know more about you-manes".

 

You look for Rainbow Dash but don't see her anymore. You look all around but can't seem to find her, so you keep flying in the general direction Rainbow Dash left. As you keep looking for her, a pegasus zooms past you. "Too slow!" she adds, taunting you, as you try to catch up to her. You realize however that she is way more athletic than you as you bite the dust. When you finally get to Las Pegaus, out-of-breath, she is laying lazily on a cloud, greeting you with a yawn. "Well, you took your time" she says, taunting you again. "Here it is. Las Pegasus."

"Rainbow Dash!" calls a voice behinds you.

Princess Celestia

A pony comes in through the sunlight for a spectacular entrance and Rainbow Dash bows before her. Realizing this must be a very important pony, you decide to bow too. You notice she has both wings and a horn, features that you noticed on both Lyra and Rainbow Dash before, but never together. "Stand up, my little ponies" she says, and Dash stands up. It takes you a while to realize this is addressed to you aswell, since you are now a pony. "Hi Princess Celestia" says Rainbow Dash. This is starting to get a little clearer. This pony is royalty. Her cutie mark is a well-decorated sun, reminding you of the royal coat of arms you used to see in your world.

"Hello Rainbow Dash" she replies. "And who is that friend with you?" she adds, looking at you. "I'm T-T-Type Writer" you slowly answer, impressed by the powerful presence that is standing right before you. "I am Celestia, princess of the sun and ruler of Equestria" she informs you. "Are you from Ponyville like Rainbow Dash and her friends" she asks you, seemingly interested.

For the first time, you actually start to like this place. The people are kind, the environment is colorful and even royal ponies take interest in their subjects. You actually want to stick here a little longer to find more about this strange but interesting land.

"Well, I woke up there this morning" you tell her, trying to be vague enough not to lie. "It has been one crazy morning, to say the least" you add. Crazy, to say the least. "Well, I hope you enjoy the rest of the day" she tells you with a large smile. "I'm sure you have a lot of things to do, so I won't hold you any longer. I just had to transmit a message to Rainbow Dash". After saying these words, she hands a letter to Rainbow Dash and flies off after wishing you a nice day.

Rainbow stores the letter away. "I'll read it at a later time" she simply says. "So, what do you want to do now? The whole Las Pegasus is at the tip of your hooves. We can go to the races, or spend a few bits at the Casino. Or we could get something to eat, that little race of ours made me hungry. So, what will it be, champ?"

"What about we do all of this?" you ask Rainbow Dash, with a little smile. "We go the races, eat a little snack there then go to the casino". She seemingly liked your idea as she smiles back. "Let's go" she said, and you head to the race track without wasting a second.

You and Rainbow Dash each sit down at your seat. Your hooves are full with that huge bag of popcorn you just bought, as you drop some of it all around you. Dash takes a hoof-full of popcorn and shoves it in her mouth, before asking: "Sho, vich pony djij yhou bhet on?". Her sentence is getting less intelligible as the popcorn goes down her throat.

"I bet on Number 3" you tell her, showing your coupon. "Lightning Spark looks like he is the best pony in all of the group". "Meh, I wouldn't bet on him. Lightning Spark is superior when it comes to speed, but you need endurance for those races, and she does not have it". After that wise bit of information, she grabs another hoof-full of buttery pop-corn and eats it the way she ate the last batch, which is everything but classy. She does clear her throat before saying; "I bet on Light Feather. She always has a slow start, but she can outrun anypony on a long distance".

 

The horn sounds and the races take off. Lightning Spark has a quick start as expected, and Light Feather gets to the back of the chase. "Ha, doesn't look for your number 5" you tell her, thinking you've won. As the ponies approach the finish line, you notice your bet starting to slow down, as Dash's bet takes the 4th, then the 3rd, the 2nd and finally the lead just before crossing the finish line. "In jur fayche" shouts Rainbow Dash her mouthful of popcorn again, as some of it hit your face. "Hoopch, Shorry!" says Rainbow Dash, still making no effort to clean her manners. "Ochkay, letch go to the cashino" she says, leading you towards the exit.

 

At the casino, you decide to try your hoof at a game of Ponyjack. All hopes seem lost and you're about to hit it when Rainbow Dash stops you and tells you to pass. "But I only have 16" you tell her, trying to make sense of what she just asked you to do. "Believe me, I know this" she says, and you realize your luck as all other ponies bust 21. "Let me show you how this is done" she tells you, pushing you aside to take your place. You realize that in no time she is starting to build up a nice amount of bits, but this catches the attention of the casino staff, who ask you to take your leave.

After you made it out of the casino, Rainbow Dash brings you back to Ponyville. "Time to hit the hay" she says, leaving you in front of Lyra's house. "See you soon" are her last words as she goes back towards Cloudsdale. You enter the house, only to notice a pony sobbing on the couch. Her friend BonBon is right besides her, trying to calm Lyra's chagrin. She's looking at you with an intense stare that makes you swallow your tongue. "So, what do you have to say for your defense, mister hu-mane?". You start to sweat and try to think of something what to say next. You put yourself in quite a situation here...

I have created a new banner for the topic. I think it looks good but it is is still far from perfect. I have uploaded the XCF file on my dropbox for anybody to edit at will. [link]

You can see Type Writer front and center (blue pony, turquoise and white mane, and its cutie mark are keyboard letters in a geometrical pattern. I had two more keyboard letters on his cutie mark but they have been hidden by his wing. Ponies will be added to this as more are introduced in the story, but right now those are the only ones that have been introduced in the story.
