Life in a Psychiatric Hospital

Being in one was one the weirdest experiences I've ever had . I wonder if any of you guys have ever been to one. Before you guys call me crazy we've all had our embarassing problems and experiences I've known people who were worse of than me. Also I am stabilized and no longer feel down and I feel well  enough to do just about anything. If you been to one list your experiences. If I had to list everything that happened to me if would be to long like this postcool.png I say some little monsters in that place a lot of them were there for beating their parents and one kid was already had a son

I've never been to one, since I don't really have any big mental or depressive problems or anything far as I know.

I do have someone I know who went to one, she didn't like it at all :P.

I don't have any personally experiences at one though, so I can't speak for myself.

Regardless i'm happy to hear your feeling better :).

I was committed for three days two weeks ago. I went in on Wednesday night and was released Saturday afternoon. The psychiatrist there gave me new medication, so that was good, but everything else was awful. The place was filled with rednecks detoxing, the food was terrible, there was nothing to do during the day, and at night a light was always kept on in my room so orderlies could open the door and check up on me.

No, thank God but I have come very close to being put in one though as I was extremely emotionally unstable during my high school years. I feel horrible for anyone who has to be in a hell hole like that, the mentally ill deserve far better than this.

I actually just finished a clinical placement on the mental health unit at my local hospital. It was a lot different from any other clinical experience I've had. From a nursing student perspective, I thought it looked rather boring. Basically what they try to do is get you back to doing your daily life functions. Once you prove that you can do your activities of daily living and show no desire to harm yourself or others, then you're fine. Where I'm from, I know they also try to connect you to community resources too for when you leave. Actually, I was able to be a part of a move to a newer, larger hospital and I was able to discuss with the patients their experiences of "the big move." Of course, it was different for everybody. OP: how did the health professionals treat you? I may be acting a little selfish right now but I want to know how I can improve my nursing practice to always make patients feel more comfortable especially in the mental health setting.

For me the experience it wasn't really bad the only problem was people provoking each other and people acting like three year olds. The food was pretty good depending on the day. I spent a total of two weeks despite the fact I was the most well behaved person. It  somewhat resembled prison because all the rooms were locked including the bathrooms and our own damn rooms. I saw a total of eight fights (which were pretty entertaining) I still remember the worst punishment(an Injection in the buttocks) or getting tied to a bed

But for me It wasn't as bad as I thought It would be

They treated me pretty good due to my good behavior and what not. But most people weren't treated as good due to their violent, childish behavior

They treated me as dangerous (even through im not) They staff had to break up a lot of fights and punished everybody for it. It was a behavior hospital but also treated people with mental disorders like schizophrenia like me. I think it depends on the person. Some of the people there a going through a crisis and are emotionally disturbed/ hurt. Some people are defiant for help and were put there against their will like a lot of people were at the place I was. I think you need a strong personality but a good and caring understanding of what the people are going through. Some people want the help and enjoy it and some people don't. Well that's all I got and sorry for it being such a long post. Well good luck with your career.

Never stayed in one of those but

I stayed at one of those residential treatment programs for teens for a few weeks. I was there for depression but they grouped us all together. Teens there for depression, drugs, stress and so on.

It was supposed to be a group therapy thing to teach us how to cope and stuff. I got better advice from teens who were older than me than the actual staff. People working there didn’t do much of anything and didn’t really care much about us. It was just a bunch of teenagers giving each other reasons to stay alive. Giving each other the same advice we knew we should probably take ourselves but didn’t.

Biggest thing that helped me was getting out of high school and when I quit working retail. Now that I’m much older I often wonder what happened to the other teens who were there with me at that time.
