Everybody's heard of Dance Dance Revolution (at least, I would think).

 

However, does anybody play Stepmania? 

 

It's... basically just DDR. Except on the computer. Where you can use the keyboard if you're too lazy to use a pad or play DDR at the arcade. 

 

I'm one of those lazy people. Here's a gameplay video of me:

 

Stepmania is free, and you can download the program here, as well as a few song packs. However, there's much more song packs on other sites you can find simply by using Google.

It's a bit hard to find tracks by specific artists. I don't know of many places to find simfile dumps, because I usually just get links from my friend Mitch, who is supposedly some kind of competitive gamer, that also gets butthurt because I'm better than him in Stepmania. x;

The notes are colour coded. Red would be every whole note, blue would be 1/2 notes, yellow for 1/4th, and it goes on and on. Once you learn how to read it, it becomes infinitely easier.

 

Anything up to 210bpm (1/4 note streams, that is) I can hold with ease even on a bad day. A little above that, and I falter ever so slightly, unless I'm extra excited and just doing well.

 

It kinda obviously helps if you have a good sense of rhythm, which I do (at least, when it comes to songs with faster bpm rates; I can't hold it if it's down to, say, 120).

There's one link to another forum that has a list of "all major simfile packs". However, some of the download links have NSFW pictures in the songs, so I'm not going to link anything. 

 

Google "stepmania packs" and the forum post with the mass list is the first entry that will show up, though.

Google will be your guide.

One of the few games I used to play on my old laptop. Quite fun to waste time on every now and again, despite the inevitable hand cramps it caused me from some rather unnatural finger movements. Never managed to obtain a rating greater than AA for more difficult songs, though for the most part, I was satisfied with a mere pass.

x3? Phew, a bit too fast for my taste. I'd tinker in the settings and set it up to maybe x1.5 or x2, but anything above and my reaction times take a nasty blow.

Hah, I wish that was me! I couldn't manage anything better than a C on it, and more often than not I'd lose it at the 0:55 mark. I'm definitely not what you'd call a skilled player, but I enjoyed playing nonetheless!

I have played Stepmania a bit. Never got good at it, but before trying Stepmania i was decent at flashflashrevolution at one point. Never became "pro", but at least i realized that if i do spend the time, i can become good at it. Which was surprising enough.

 

I hate the fact that i learned to play with arrow keys and since my keyboard has the "hardware limit", i usually can't press 3-4 arrows at the same time. I should stop whining and just re-learn to play with custom keys, but..

I used to think that, but human brain and body can do freaky stuff and i bet you will surprise yourself if you just play it for a while. The issue at the beginning is that you can see the arrow's but your fingers are unable to react in time to this new experience. Eventually your fingers seem to move before you realize yourself what is going on and that feels kinda.. amazing.

 

Eventually you run in to a much bigger problem. Your arm gets tired from a single song Too many arrows (or maybe it's just me)

All this talk of rhythm games makes me miss the good old days of O2Jam, I want my O2Jam back. I always thought Stepmania was a bit too derpy to control the way I could in O2Jam.

I tried playing O2Jam and Osu's Osumania rip-off of O2Jam, but it was just too weird for me.

I really enjoyed how the buttons are in order, and you have to press them like that. The thing is, O2Jam just disappeared completely and became more and more region locked, I never got any good. But I like it way more than the arrow keys cause I can split focus. I cannot be even a quarter as good on Stepmania than I was on O2Jam, and I was rubbish at O2Jam.

You make it sound like you were actually using the arrow keys or something, which caused you to be thrown off.

 

Also, there's a noteskins you can set (like retrobar) that make left and down one coloured bars, and up and right a different colour set of bars.

 

I have my set-up as d, f, j, and k in respective order to the set-up to the arrows.

I used to play this game at times, i have it installed even to this day.

 

I remember all those frickin hard songs, with Step level 10 and higher.

 

This one especially. It's also pretty long, teh fingers go numb.

Hey there is little talk of pony packs in this thread. I'd love to know where to find some good packs to play or just a single chart that you thought was good. Here are the ones I know about and my general thoughts. Just so you know I only play pad so opinions are based off that.

My Little Pony Season 01 pack  - Love the songs and they are expertly stepped. There are 20 songs total and I believe they came in two separate downloads containing 10 songs each. All difficulties. The original spot they were released is offline but it is being hosted on a few websites just google for it and you should find a download for it.

Trotmania  - Tons of songs (over 100) and has themes for stepmania 5. They have rhytm is magic and chrystalize packs and themes out. Really fun to play. They do have some nonpony songs thrown in there but they tried to pick songs that fit the overall theme of ponies (or have great pmvs) but you can always take those out if you want. Good range of difficulty so anyone can play. http://trotmania.blogspot.com/

Arrows are Magic - 2 versions out now each containing 10 songs. The difficulty ramps up significantly from standard to heavy. Creator likes to toss in 16th and occasionally 24ths for heavy difficulty and above so be prepared for that. Overall pretty decent. http://www.youtube.com/user/WinDEU

Great and Powerful (Jayce) - Lots of good songs but sadly only challenge difficulty. So not a great pack for parties. Does seem to be nicely stepped the ones I have tried. So if you love challenge difficulty this may be for you http://divinelegy.com/?portal=simfiles 

check under jayce. Also has a mini mlp pack alongside his great and powerful pack.

For Daniel 3.5 (MLP FIM version) - Also only challenges. 23 songs. Hard to tell if it is well stepped since I dont play challenge modes very often. Can't find original spot for it but a simple search will bring up plenty of places to download this pack.

Party in Equestria  - Not a pad pack. About 40 something songs most only with challenge difficulty. There are a few with the other difficulties but they are much harder then a regular ddr song would be at those difficulties. http://partyinequestria.tumblr.com/post/29957707271/all-links

My Little Brony Pack - 10 songs with only challenge difficulty. A bit too hard for me to play on pad but if you like challenge mode give it a go. Video he had with download spot is down so just do a simple search to find it.
