Crystal Empire: Steeleye Sungazer

Scouting operations could kiss his flank. After a two week trek through every blasted mud pit, swamp, and vertical sloped mountain in all of Equestria, Steeleye was ready to give her Royal 'pain-in-the-flank-ness' the 'royal' flying tail flip. Of course, he knew and had been raised better than that. But the sheer magnitude and insanity of the 'scenic' route he had been ordered to take had driven him beyond the point of caring and almost over the brink of his own personal sanity. Everypony knew what happened when one drank too much Hard Apple Cider. Your judgement went to ruin and you could barely stand upright. There was sobriety, often considered the opposite of that condition. What most didn't realize was that the -true- opposite of drunkeness was to be knurd.

It was a slightly silly name, simply 'drunk' spelled backwards. But it truely magnified that the two conditions were on totally different sides of the mental spectrum, as far away from each other as east was west. When one was knurd, everything in reality became one hundred percent crystal clear. All of one's own opinions were stripped away until there was only cold hard facts. A mind like that, the rare pony that became knurd, had an anger and will powerful enough to forcibly drag the east and the west together and make them sit in the naughty corner of existence.

Thankfully, Steeleye Sungazer wasn't quite knurd yet. He was only about nine tenths of the way there. But for anyone watching it was an awful sight to behold. The parasites that had plagued him in the swamps died when his body became so wound up and clenched that they could no longer peirce his coat to get at his life blood. An almost solid of mud and pebbles cemented within had coated his body. The only thing left clean was his head. It would have been the final straw. He would rather let the world burn and reality crumble than someone not recognize him due to grime. It was an odd personality quirk, probably the only thing that kept him from being knurd.

So it was definitely for their own good when the gate guards to Princess Cadence's castle scrambled to open the gates when he came in sight. Out of a contingent of ten ponies of varying skill level that had been sent under his command, six were still walking. Two of the most junior scouts were being carried by those that could still walk, exhausted beyond the point of movement. One of their original number was completely and totally absent. The space where he should have been glared out to everyone, even the people that didn't know about the mission. The finaly remaining scout under Steeleye's command was quite literally being dragged by his tail. It quite surprised some that the one being forcibly returned was in fact Steeleye's second in command, a pegasus by the name of Darting Route.

He had always been know an as expert flier, truly shining in the field of arial reconnescaince. His stern but kind nature and level-headed mentality had been something to admire. Now he was an absolute gibbering mess. Both of his wings at been snapped at the shoulder joint and tied to his sides in order to prevent him from flying as well as his hooves being chained together. His mouth was muffled by an extremely thick leather gag. Signs of physical abuse were all over his once well kept brown coat. His mane, previously a bright yellow, was so coated in dirt that it looked grey. Steeleye actually had his mouth clamped around the stallion's tail. Even as he was dragged, Darting Route violently thrashed and writhed, trying to get away. His muffled screams could be heard for a mile.

So when Steeleye slung the pegasus through the throne room doors, it probably wasn't a surprise to Princess Cadence that something was incredibly wrong. Steeleye radiated pure and utter rage. A swift buck knocked the pegasus unconcious in order to shut him up. "I just -dragged- my second and command through nearly fifty miles of brush, mud, and valleys because he was driven -insane- by the things he saw. Whatever you hoped to accomplish by this route, it had better be worth it." His presence seemed to muffle the light in the room, his body seeming to grow. Then the scene snapped back to reality and he continued. "Apologies my Princess, it's been a rather stressful trip and my aide here has... I don't know quite how to describe what happened to him. But he's not fit for duty any longer."

"Other than mapping previously unknown and suicidal routes through some of the most treacherous terrains in Equestria, I would appreciate knowing if there was a purpose to this mission my Lady. Because quite frankly, the one's I took with me are some of the best and tracking and survival. You can see how that turned out for us. An army attempting those pathways would just be food for... I actually don't know the name of what most of those creatures were." It was almost like two different ponies talking. The first an extremely angry and powerful wizard, the last a carefully poised and oriented servant.

(last post for me tonight)

The guard returned soon enough to the throne room with a changeling in chains, and presented him to Cadence.

"You creatures are so strange...when was the last time you where fed huh? And you've survived all this time down there?" she asked in a somewhat caring tone, with a hint of mocking. "Guard, fetch us a sandwich, will you?"

The guard looked confused for a second before hesitantly backing out of the room and making his way to the kitchen.

"I need you to do something for me, for you, for all of you. If you do this, i'll make sure that all of your brothers and sisters are fed forever, and you can all have your revenge against Celestia..."

The changeling looked up and growled, nodding its head slightly as it tried to flare its wings, but was restricted by the chains.

"Easy there, i'll release you soon enough..."

*Thump* The doors to the throne room burst open, and several ponies came trotting in.

"Steeleye! How lovely to see you! And in such a state!" Cadence replied cheerfully, in a tone that bordered sarcasm and concern. "Come now, lets get you some food, and lets get you cleaned up, you might also want to have somepony take your injured to medical." She hopped up from her throne, and walked over to a table, sitting down and gesturing for Steel to do the same. "Mapping is important, you know. Every inch of terrain we don't know, gives Celestia one more inch of advantage!" She paused for a second as she rested her chin on her hoof and looked out the window "Suicidal routes eh? Harmony would enjoy the walk, I think..." she raised an eyebrow as she mulled over the concept for a second, before turning her attention back to the matter at hoof "If we know this terrain isn't fit for an army, that's one less route Celestia can strike from...and one more she wont be expecting us to strike from! See my point?" She looked back over at the crippled squad in the doorway "So...tell me, what exactly did you run into?"

(@, you ninja'd me with a novel. How is that even possible?

Also, I apologise for the horrible quality edit, my brain has literally stopped. There's a good chance i'll come online tomorrow and just delete this whole thing and redo it, unless someone has replied to it, then it wouldn't make sense.)

On the streets of the Crystal Empire, guards went about their usual patrol routes, shifting up every now and again, occasionally doubling patrols on streets that looked as if they harboured suspicious activity, sometimes leaving streets unattended for several minutes at a time before guards returned to them, as well as taking a different route every now and again, it was somewhat sloppy work from the guards, they couldn't have their eyes everywhere at once, but their numbers protected them from being picked off, at least. Suddenly a patrol of guards ran down the street Acheron and Cerulean where down, shooting a passing glance at the two as they ran past.

Swordpoint clenched his teeth and closed his eyes. ”... We ride for Canterlot. We must tell Celestia what has happened.” He extended his wings, and a golden aura surrounded him. He released his spell, and wings sprouted from his companions. He fell to his knees, panting heavily. ”Gah... This spell will not last forever, and I have expended too much energy casting it. We must make haste. Now, MOVE OUT!”

He took to the sky and motioned for his team mates to follow.

Applejack shook her head. Some ponies just don't get it...

The door opened and Twilight smiled, but it quickly faded when she saw Applejack's condition. ”Oh my goodness! What happened, Applejack?!”

”We need to come inside, sugarcube,” Applejack said urgently.

Twilight nodded and stepped aside. When they were inside, Applejack recounted the tale of the Crystal Army's attack on Appleloosa. ”We need to tell Celestia right away. Ah have a feelin' that this ain't just a random attack.”

Twilight hung her head. ”So it's true... She really has lost her mind.” Tears welled in her eyes. ”Spike! I need you to take a message!”

Cerulean half smiled. She had so much hatred for Cadence.  "My name is.. Cerulean Sky." She paused "Where are we going?"

She was nervous about this stallion talking to her, but she also wanted to go away from the streets.

"Wherever it is I'm sure, is better than here."

Acheron stepped aside from the path of the guards and pulled Cerulean away from the way as well. He noticed the guards had shot some glances at them, but he played it cool and feigned inconspicuousy. After they were well gone from sight, Acheron motioned slightly for the mare to follow him away from both the slums and the city. It was near some of the abandoned mines where everypony avoided....

"I hope the walk wasn't too hard on you," said the unicorn. "So then... you've had it hard too eh? Like many... What happened to you?"

(Since you never stated where the meeting is I guess I'll just make it up)

Crystal Dusk read the rest of the scroll. Chrysalis and Cadence were meeting to discuss "things" at 3 o'clock the next day. The meeting would be in the main conference room in the Crystal Palace.

Ugh. Spying on this meeting is going to be a challenge.

Crystal decided that she would share this information with the rest when Krein got back from scouting the city

She felt very hurt. "No I'm fine," She lied. "My mother and father died when I was younger." Cerulean paused, beginning to cry. "I came to the Crystal Empire to find hope in my Artistic career. Before all of this happened, I was supposed to go to an arts show in the Crystal Empire, instead, well, you know what happened."

Acheron felt some sympathy for the mare, seeing her cry because of the pain Cadence had put her through because of her unjust rule.

"Of course I can," said the unicorn with a smile. "I can teach you how to harness your anger and use it against Cadenza effectively. Believe it or not, there are more like us in hiding, ones who want to see that mare fall into oblivion..."

Cerulean started to stop sobbing. "I want her to pay for what she's done. Not just what she's done to me, but what she's done to the entire empire!" She started to flap her wings, to show that she meant it. "She's causing more damage than what King Sombra has done to the Crystal Empire before! She needs to pay!"

Cerulean lowered to the ground. "I definitely want to harness this anger."

Crystal Empire: Steeleye Sungazer

Steeleye had to give his second a swift kick to the head, as the latter had woken up and started to babble again. "With due respect Princess, it is not really worth detailing all of my expedition. So I decided to bring along my chart and precision measuring equipment in order to outline the most important points." His horn lit up and a piece of the mud encasing him snapped off and lifted into the air. It shook itself violently over a trashbin, shaking off the dirt and caked rocks, revealing itself to be a large messenger tube and satchel. Popping the lid and removing the map he had edited, Steeleye presented it in a managable format by hanging it in the air. Meanwhile his squad was taken off to medical care, with the exclusion of Darting Route.

"The route that you suggested, as some pony whom I can't remember which, is essentially a death march through every deadly, mysterious, and uninhabitable bit of terrain Equestria has to offer. We went through no less than five different kinds of death biomes: Perma-Frost Tundra, Sand Wastes, Toxic Swamps, Vertical Slope Mountain Ranges, and my personal hatred: Urban Sprawl." A pointing rod was summoned to the map, pointing out the region north of the Crystal Mountains, the Southern Wastelands, the deepest section of Everfree Swamps, every mountain range, and noticably Manehatten. "One would assume that going through a city would actually be the least likely to get one killed out of the five. In reality, that's where we were in the most danger and lost our only casualty."

"His name was Trooper Dusk Vision, the absolute expert on matters of hidden espionage and stealth tactics that the Crystal Empire had to offer. But I will get to that later. Our journey began at the castle here, heading up into the Tundra Badlands, or Ice Plains as some call them." He moved his pointer to show the northernly route. "There we were assaulted near constantly by frost trolls, which were though to be extinct. In reality, no pony has seen one for a long time because no one was stupid enough to go to where they live. We solved that issue. I personally blew up every Ice Troll warren we came across. You could drop a rock and you'd find one wherever you happened to be standing. Even considering that, the things are like cock-roaches. We had to stop wasting time and move on after we had enough fur to keep ourselves insulated."

"Next we took an unexpected trip down to the inside of a glacier when the ice split. Thankfully we had enough magic between us to do a teleportation spell in short order. While intended to be short range, someone put the wrong rune down and we ended up all the way down here, in the Southern Wastes." The pointy jumped to the graphed region near the bottom of the map that was mostly blank. "To ward off questions, I meticulously noted down -everything- I saw as we made our way out with exacting measurements for distance and size. Quite simply put: There is nothing there but sand. Here we encountered one of the un-named creatures I mentioned. It appeared to be some giant form of burrowing carnivorous worm, made entirely out of sand. The small one's were thicker than an hundred year old oak tree. One ate Junior Scout Ivy Mane, the young mare you saw being carried. Of course its hard to tell gender under all the muck. She was nearly eviscerated when we got her back. We employed the use of small grade magical explosions stored in jars, bursting the worm into dust. It quickly reformed, but we made our escape before they re-oriented themselves. Ivy Mane doesn't have an inch on her body that isn't scar tissue now. It was like sand blasting a wet blanket."

After walking for three days and killing a wasteland survivalist for the water in his body, we actually forced him to lead us most of the way out  before we did so now that I think of it, we arrived at the Southern Plains. Farmland. Still, not a moment went by when something didn't try to kill us. We looked like criminals by that point, so the angry mob was understandable. I still haven't figured out how a mare managed to have a one night stand with my when I was hanging upside down from a poorly made noose on a high branch. We burned the farm down, accidentally, but they deserved it. We stole the provisions we were sure that even the scavengers would turn their nose up at so that we would be able to eat. We also broke a number of bridges, for trains mostly. We hijacked a train engine. Apparently the rails are only meant to hold up under a certain amount of reckless speeding."

"Our train ended up spiting us for the abuse in the end, breaking down right in the middle of Everfree Forest. Using our best navigational skills, we were STILL not able to avoid the Swampy Regions. I know your Highness ordered us to go there in startling detail, but we thought had enough data by that point. We were wrong. The world hates us and was going to make us do the whole circuit. We met most of the creatures that are rumored to live in Everfree. I wish it were a joke that they ran away when they saw us, but unfortunately it was true. Sergeant Pay Dirt had somehow conspired to have the deadliest insect in all of the Forest attach itself to his head. So its extremely possible that the creatures were running from it and not us ponies. Sergeant Pay Dirt's little leech friend doesn't have a species name. It effectively eats your brain and reassembles it inside its stomache, crawling inside the head cavity and sealing the hole. It was somewhat mortifying to watch, but we were tied up in meat eating creeper vines. Slow digestive system, those plants. Once it was done the Sergeant woke up and thus far has seemed to be perfectly fine. It actually made him smarter than he was before and that stallion could sniff out a gold bit in the middle of a hay feild. He actually did at one point. Only, he speaks in griffon now. Fortunately a couple of the Scout Team are fluent in that language. I know enough to get by. An interesting note, there is a much larger and carnivorous version of those little Parasprite bugs. One tried to eat my eyeballs."

"The mud from the Everfree Bogs is extremely resilient once hardened. Its been coating the entire team for a whole week and still won't come off our flesh. Non-living materials can be easily cleaned. After that we went on an underground tour through a systen of mountain tunnels we happened to fall into with no way out. After careful analysis, I've determined that we found the ancient maze from myth, the Labrynth of the Minotaur. One of the chaps eventually found it inside his big fluffy heart to lead us out. What he neglected to mention was that the maze changes constantly. It grows and moves of its own will. That and the fact that he wanted to eat us when we got out. Somehow we came out in the middle of Manehatten."

"That place should be burned to the ground. I would actually suggest blockading the island and... what was the term, 'nuke it from orbit'. I don't know quite where I heard that or know what it entails, but if it wipes Manehatten off the map I'm game. The angry mob was bad enough, but in Manehatten everything is trying to kill you and rifle through your dead body when its -helping- you. Your enemies are far worse. Every possible kind of depravity and social taboo exists there in  abundance. We had to.... I would rather not describe what happens if they drag you into a club for 'employment'. Thats what broke my second on the ground here. I think it had something to do with a stallion larger than four regular ponies and something about that psychological condition where you fall in love with the one that abuses and kidnapped you. Of course he was quite insane by that point. Still is. If I took off the gag and let him go, he would sprint straight to the nearest restroom while screaming about cotton candy and a pink mare with balloons on her flank. It wouldn't be wise to describe or watch what he does. I threw up... three times after I managed to drag him out."

"So we hitched a ride all the way back here, burned a couple of farms to make ourselves feel better, and -then- finally came back a collection of gibbering baffoons, a stallion that screeches like a hawk, myself, and this map here. Important point, the Labrynth actually has a set number of entrances. About twenty I believe. But the pathways connecting all of them shift constantly. So it is feasible if you sent enough ponies in there, eventually one or two might pop out at the exit point you desire. But you'd need.... a few hundred thousand ponies. Minotaurs are extremely hungry all of the time."

Acheron nodded at her and grinned.

"She will, and we will make her suffer in life as we orchestrate her demise," he said as he conjured up a mysterious tome which gave off a dark aura. Acheron led her into the entrance of the caves, the crystals reacting to his dark presence by giving off a slight glow of purple. After much traveling and supporting Cerulean to keep her from passing out, the two finally arrived in the well hidden center of operation for the Black Hoof. The others seemed to be busy, giving time for him to talk to the pegasus.

"First, we will need to restore your condition," Acheron said as he ripped a dark crystal from the ground, crushing it with his magic. Manipulating it, he mixed it with some water he had and handed the glowing vial to Cerulean.

"Don't be frightened by the obvious dark influence of this potion. It shall give you the benefits of quick healing, and raise your physical abilities to more than you were before. The darkness will give you a new taste for blood, and will remove the regular hesitation you would normally hold when first going to kill someone. From there, I'll make sure the darkness doesn't overcome you..."

Crystal Dusk noticed Achreon return with another pony. She decided to walk over there and see who this is.

@Krein

"So is this another pony who wants to join us?"

The pony looked extremely malnourished and dirty like she didn't have a home.

Reminds me of me when I was homeless. Maybe she was homeless too.

She looked at the vial and back to Acheron. She hesitantly sipped it. Immediately she dropped the vial and her eyes turned red. She felt better than before. After a second her eyes turned the normal color. "I feel... Amazing." She looked at the Stallion with hungry eyes. "I really want some blood. I think that would make me feel good right now. Could I have some of yours?" She smiled, feeling exhilarated.

Acheron chuckled as he managed the darkness spreading inside Cerulean, letting it spread slowly so that it wouldn't craze her completely.

"When I meant 'new taste for blood' I didn't know it was going to be taken quite literally," Acheron said as he raised her face to his to examine her. There were slight swirls of red and black inside her eyes, an indication that her body and soul had accepted the potion of darkness.

"The potion has endowed you with so much more power than you had before, you can even put the Wonderbolts themselves to shame. But surely that is not all... let me see what you are capable of now..."

But Acheron did not hear her. She dove straight down next to him. A huge hole  was created deep into the ground. The whole cave shook and dirt began to fall from the top of the cave. Many ponies started to gasp and speak with panic. "Oops." Is all that Cerulean could say.

Acheron looked at Crimson when he spoke and smiled.

"I'm quite sure she is, and that she will be able to handle herself well when the occasion calls for it."

Acheron was about to turn to Cerulean, but was surprised to see her zip up quickly into the air and then smash him into the ground. He chuckled slightly and coughed, struggling up from the blow and helping Cerulean to her hooves.

"Impressive to say the least...."

Acheron's horn lit up and fired a shot of dark energy quickly at her to see if she would dodge it in time....

@,

Cerulean quickly dodged the dark energy and looked at the ground behind her. There were black flames on the ground. "Hey!" She said, smiling.

"I have really good reflexes, and I can pretty much make a big hole in the ground, but what does this mean to defeating Cadenza?"

Cerulean shook her head. This is so crazy, but I feel like I can understand it somehow. Before I didn't want to even hurt a fly, but now I'm willing to kill anypony. You were right about the effects. When do we start killing these 'personal' assistants?" She felt determined now.

But Acheron did not hear her. Many ponies started to gasp and speak with panic.

(I understand you'd want to add those in for effect, but please try to refrain from controlling other peoples characters in the RP)

@,

Cadence sat down still, scratching her cheeks and rubbing her chin at the various statements Steeleye produced. "How would you feel about going back to some of these places? The everfree forest sounds like it harbors some delightful treats for the members of Canterlot and Manehatten, do you think you could collect us some specimens? It's understandable if you don't feel like going back, i'll have some of my guards go and take a look if you'd prefer, i'd just like to avoid unnecessary casualties. Come to think of it, I wasn't even aware trains ran through the Everfree Forest..." she looked back at the map on her wall on the other side of the room, "how old is that map? Anyway, Manehatten was our intended next target, or at least the trains that run there, we where planning on simply cutting the island off - judging by your tone I would assume your suggestion would be to demolish the entire city, yes?"

The guard returned later with a pretty tasty looking salad sandwich, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and hay, with a daisy garnish.

"Ah ha! Very good, would you kindly go and rustle us up two more? I've grown hungry and Steel returned while you where away, otherwise I would have asked you sooner, apologies dear!" Cadence chirped, again in a happy tone as she took the sandwich and placed the plate on the floor in front of the changeling, whom was still struggling furiously to free himself. A look of hopefulness filled his hollow eyes for a moment as he saw the food, and when Cadence stepped away, there was almost a smile on his face before he dove into the sandwich hungrily. It was almost as if he hadn't eaten in weeks, the way he devoured it - his body also changed appearance a few times, no doubt to that of ponies he'd imitated before.

"Strange creatures aren't they? I'll be sending this one back to Chrysalis in hopes that she'll...put aside our differences. My army is powerful...yes. But there's going to be no stopping us if we manage to ally with the changeling queen..." She began scribbling down another message on a piece of paper.

Queen Chrysalis,

Odd as though this may seem, I would like an audience with your highness. I wont go into detail, but we share a common interest...

Celestia's iron reign can last no longer, would you be so benevolent as to join me in my palace in the Crystal Empire come tomorrow afternoon?

-Cadence <3

"That should give the creature something to consider." She huffed as she folded up the note and wax sealed its ribbon.

Sanura gasped as wings grew from her back. She flapped them experimentally; they seemed real enough. So, there was a spell to give earth ponies such as herself temporary wings. She liked that, very much. Sanura flapped the wings harder, and flew up into the sky behind Swordpoint. She was unsteady on the temporary wings, but managed to stay airborn. And despite the seriousness of their mission, the half zebra found that she was enjoying the sensation of flight.

@,

"Very mature, Acheron. But I've got better things to do than listen to your insults."

@,

"I can get you blood... I'll never understand this craving for material nourishment however. I feed off the souls of dead ponies... and sometimes unlucky live ones. That's also where my power comes from. Each time, it gives me more power. But as for blood, I know exactly where to find some."

He began to walk to the exit teleporter.

@Krein

"So I guess you're just not going to answer my question? And what the buck did you do to her!?" screamed Crystal Dusk.

Whoever that pony was was acting very creepy now that Krein had given her that weird drink. Crystal was very suspicious of whatever Acheron had given that pony.

@@Super Derpy,

"Hahaha, you must know nothing about dark magic. That was some kind of vial of power. Of course, they do have side effects, like making ponies carnivorous. I personally like the change. I may regret saying that in the near future, but she seems a lot less wimpy now."

Crimson growled and punched a nearby stallagmite, shattering it to pieces, "why would you do thay to sompony? She probably didn't even know what it would do to her! Now its made her hungery for BLOOD! What the buck did you give her!? Vampire blood!?" Asked crimson, now only inches away from acheron, his body temperatire reaching boiling levels, until steam began to rise from his body.
