Let's learn to draw ponies! Sketch this picture! (Current: Pinkie Pie)

Wow, the thing I love most about this community is how it is extremely inspirational, patient and nurturing. There are a lot of amazing artists in this thread. Well this thread has inspired me to try drawing for literally the first time apart from school projects when I was young. The result: this abomination.

In all seriousness this is way better then I thought I could do. All it took me was reading a couple guides and learning a skeleton. The problems I notice instantly are: the body is too long, head is far too small, eyes are weird (especially left eye which is far too derpy), stomach way to flat (Twilight must be on a diet), muzzle too raised up, the ear just looks weird (too skinny?) and hind limb cutting into cutie mark (derp). I think I learned a lot and will redo this picture when I get a chance. I am excited to see improvement.

I wasn't sure which one ya'll meant to practice drawing, just for the sake to see if I could actually DO it, I gave it a go. I'm not too worried about my abilities as I tend to draw ponies my own way, regardless i wanted to see if my raw talent could match up. So here it is, my freehand Twilight Sparkle

Well, here is my second attempt at drawing Twilight. Overall, I am not too happy with it. I tried to correct some of my errors this time around, and ended up overcompensating. I wound up with this Twilight with too much man muscle in the stomach, a barrel chest and too much junk in the rump. Even if the body is too fat, I think I achieve a more correct pony shape this time around. Is there any improvement, what do you guys think?

Legs are too skinny and possibly too short. And wow, I am an idiot forgot the eyelashes... oh well I am just too lazy

I know, the face is smooshed and the legs are short. I had to keep switching the view on my tablet. It's a lot harder than I thought it would be to draw when I can't see the reference.

Here's my quick sketch:

You guys are all so hard on yourselves! The ponies look cute. Nobody here is looking for perfection, this is just so we can practice collectively and watch ourselves/eachother grow :) That's the cool thing about drawing. You can only get better. Always improving.

I hope you guys participate in the next sketch! I like seeing your doodles

*Okay, so lets take a look at the second pony. Okay so this has a slightly different pose, shouldn't be too bad. Hmmm a bow-tie, that may be tough, but not much worse than a horn. Alright, so shouldn't be too hard... Wait... No! Wings? Wings!

True story. Looks like I am learning how to draw wings XD

So here's my drawing of Flitter.

I wasn't sure what her cutie mark was, so I just didn't draw it.

The program I did this on can't do gradients, so I just did a bunch of different shades of that purple until it looked okay.

The head's not at the right angle, which made the right eye (hers) difficult. Also, the body's not turned right, making unnecessary negative space between the front and hind legs. I'm kinda crap at doing pegasus wings... which is obvious here... As always, the line work is unsteady.

Yeah, I suck at drawing ponies >.<;;

Welp, I don't draw show accurate ponies. EVER., I wanted to draw it so badly in my style halfway through Flitter o.O it was sorta fun, could use some tweaking, but I it was more of drawing as I went instead of doing guidelines for the whole thing. Stupid wings, this is why I never draw wings in fim style. >_<

My friends, as @D1SC0RD has said you're all way too hard on yourselves! What I see currently here, for everyone, is great potential and the awakening of your inner artist. You may think that I'm being silly, but you've already accomplished the most difficult task anyone can undertake when drawing for the first time: simply applying pencil/pen to paper. Most individuals whom want to learn how to draw don't even get past this hurdle, be proud of yourselves for what you've done!

Now there are some of you whom are not proud of what you have drawn and posted, or perchance you're twisting at yourself from within. My friends, you can't beat yourself up over something which comes natural with learning any new skill. Mistakes are bound to happen, they will happen, for it's an incredibly important part of learning anything! So ya missed giving eye lashes to Twi or perchance you made her taller than usual, try your best to remember those mistakes for the next drawing and do your best. Sometimes though, no matter how good we get, we can't help but compare our images to someone elses and feel inferior.

It's easy to compare your drawing to another and dishearten yourself. In fact, this toxic act can be enough to have us throw in the towel and quit drawing all together. It's as though every good quality of your image is thrown out the window and all you see is garbage. You can't do this to yourself. Remember, the same person you've compared your image to knows what you're going through. In fact, there's a good chance that an artist you may see as "a god in which you'll never be able to compare yourself to" is feeling the exact same way as you after they to compared their image to another experienced artist. We are all at our own skill level. Whether it's simply learning how to walk or drawing ponies, we all grow at our own rates. Just as we all have our own unique personalities and traits, our manifestations of our style and methods are our own as well. Stop beating yourselves up over natural progress and give yourself a pat on the back.

I'm looking forward to everyone's drawings, give it your all and have fun!
