Lighthope 36 June 10, 2013 Share June 10, 2013 I have a few questions. These are honest questions; I am not trying to stir controversy. I'd appreciate your input. What is the problem with Derpy? Why is she so hated by some people? To me, she's a cute bubble-head popularised by Crissy Snow from the old Three's Company show. Would Luna really be so loved if more were known about her? Is she better kept as a background character? Why is Cadance princess of the Crystal pony kingdom? Wouldn't a crystal pony be a better candidate? Why are only alicorns princesses? Is there racism in Equestria? If Celestia is a princess, doesn't this mean there should be a King or Queen around? How exactly does Rarity represent the element of Generosity? Vanity I can see, but Generocity? Any generocity she has displayed has been couched in vanity. Is Spike Twilight's slave? What exactly is his relationship with her? Are only Celestia and Luna long-lived? Cadance seemed to be quite young as Twilight's foal-sitter. Follow up on last question: If Cadance was indeed so young and was already a princess, what could she have done to earn the position at that age, considering all the hoops Twilight had to jump through? (Pun intended.) Or was she simply born a princess? And then what were her parents? I know a lot of these questions seem noobish. They've just been bothing me. Ventfy 19 June 10, 2013 Share June 10, 2013 (edited) People dislike Derpy because she is "offending" Opinions change, if we were to be given more background story about Luna it could go both ways. Personally I'd like to see more about her. Apparently Cadance was destined to be the ruler of the Crystal Empire, hence her cutie mark. I do not care either way and it seems to be a good fit to me. Because Hasbro. No, thats up to the writers and we wouldn't have any other say in it. She helped with the mustache problem in Episode one. She made dresses for her friends for free, she helped fluttershy become a model. He is her assistant, far from a slave. He clearly has free will seeing as how Twilight allowed him to freely go to the Dragon Migration. Discord is older than both Luna and Celestia, no one else. This cannot be answered correctly, there is no backstory or explanation, however it was stated that Cadance was not intented to be an Alicorn (Hasbro again) TL;DR Don't assume there is more to the story, go off based what you know. I dislike it greatly when people would read up on a story then add more to it themselves because it seem likely and believe it's real. Really fucking stupid I mean astute people found her offensive, without realizing the irony in that... 2. I will always wuv woona 3. I believe cadence was destined to be their ruler, crystal pony or not, nontheless I wish they had more lore on crystal ponies... 4. Alicorns are gifted creatures and are made not born, you become one once you are ready, and if fate dictates. 5. This one keeps me up at night... 6. Ehh, she is rather generous just not really in an "in your face" manner, for instance the gala dresses she made were free. 7. They've known eachother since Spikes birth, theyre friends Spike just likes to help out. 8. I believe so, but I'm also pretty sure cadence and Twilight are now immortal 9. I thought about that too, I imagine it's probably related to her skill of spreading Love. Hope this helped =)
Jadefire 2,798 June 10, 2013 Share June 10, 2013 1) She's a walking disaster area who causes destruction with every step she takes, she's referred to by an insulting name (Derpy is considered mildly derogatory both on and off the internet), she's treated with scorn and exasperation by Rainbow Dash, she's cock-eyed, and she speaks with a simpleton voice. All of those are stereotypes that tend to bug the mental disability community, and having all those stereotypes lumped into a random pony who's only purpose was to kick off the plot by destroying City Hall was bound to irk a few people. (Remember, only the Brony fandom knows who Derpy is, everyone else who'd seen the episode would've thought she was created for that episode) Ordinarily, this wouldn't be a problem (For example, Snails didn't cause as much of a stir, partially because he embodied fewer stereotypes and was more exaggerated, and partially because he wasn't as popular within the Brony fandom). However, a couple of insane moral guardians latched onto Derpy and started a crusade to clean her up. Part of some people's dislike with her stems from the massive amounts of drama that followed her for a long time afterward, since some of her defenders were just as psychotic and hateful as the nutjobs who objected to her portrayal. 2) Probably, but she got pretty good characterization in Luna Eclipsed, so some of her love stems from that. I think she'll remain liked if she got a few more (at least sporadic) appearences. 3) She was their savior, I guess. It was never confirmed, but it seems like the crystal ponies liked her when she got the crystal heart away from Sombra. 4) I think it's just because of coincidence. The ponies who are the most qualified as rulers also happen to be alicorns. Alternatively, the princesshood are given to alicorns because they have more abilities than regular ponies, which would allow them to rule more effectively (keep in mind Celestia made it pretty explicit that she made sure Twilight was qualified before granting her alicornhood) 5) Not necessarily. She could be a princess because she's unmarried. Also, it could be her mother and father were king and queen, and she never took up the title for unclear reasons (like out of respect). 6) Watch episode 1 again. She's very vain, but she's also legitimately interested in other ponies' welfare. 7) Like a secretary. I think it's implied that he's like a loyal little brother to Twilight, and I imagine he can leave if he so wants. But he loves Twilight and wants to help out. 8) It was never made clear. One of the show's writers said that Twilight "will not outlive her friends", with whatever that implies, but nothing was ever confirmed. 9) One of the comics (though unknown if it is canon) revealed she was originally a pegasus, and "earned" her princesshood in a similar manner to Twilight. I never read the comic, so I don't know what she did right off hand. Ponysona bio, here.
pinkiefan1287 610 June 10, 2013 Share June 10, 2013 1. Some people (Soccer Mom's) just found her to be offensive, because of her voice and eyes. 2. There is no guarantee that is true, but it would be nice to know a little about her. 3. Well Cadance was able to make them believe in love and saved the crystal heart. So that could be why. Maybe they just liked her. As a side question, how did Sombra become King? He's a unicorn. 4. No idea. I don't think it has to do with racism. 5. They were going to make her a Queen, but Queens are normally viewed as evil. So they made her a princess. No idea if there is a higher form of royalty. 6. Ture it has been a little weak at time, but some times she is very generous. 7. He is not a slave. Spike consideres Twilight as a family member or as his mother. 8. Celestia and Luna have lived a long time. I think if you are turned into a alicorn you don't gain the power of immortally. 9. Well there is a book called the Chrystal Heart which tell how she became an alicorn. I have yet to read it, but it's the story. From what I heard, Cadence is an orphan and was born a pegasus. An Old Head 4,816 June 10, 2013 Share June 10, 2013 1) It's a combination of a background pony getting so much acclaim (nyurr, Derpy's overrated!!) and the fact that being all wall-eyed and clumsy at the same time could be a dig at the mentally challenged. I seriously doubt that was their intention though... to me, Derpy's just Derpy. 2) The appeal of Luna is that you sympathise with her - a thousand years in the moon is a tough break. So much of a tough break that she's forgotten how to speak to people properly. That's kinda adorable. :3 I think that knowing more about her wouldn't really break that trait to like about her, so long as it doesn't claim that she had a PS2 to play on the moon or something 3) I suppose it's a system much like annointing county mayors. Certain empires get certain princesses. Cadance gets the Crystal Empire, Celestia and Luna get Canterlot, and I guess other places have royal overseers. 4) Think of alicorns as an allegory for royal blood. One must have the features of royalty to truly embody the princess role. 5) It's a fantasy world. Faust said herself that she opted out from there being the presence of a queen because studios such as Walt Disney had made queens out to be evil characters, with princesses always being the good people. They had to do it to suit their cartoon; no queens! 6) Generosity can be described quite broadly. When Rarity isn't being generous, she's appreciating generosity. Ever heard the idea that good deeds can cause a chain reaction of good deeds? Think of Spike giving Rarity the fire ruby in Secret of My Excess; Rarity never asked for it, but she dearly appreciated an act of generosity. There are other situations too, they all correlate to generosity without it necessarily being that Rarity is doing the generous act. 7) No, far from a slave. Think of, say, how Smithers is to Mr Burns in the Simpsons. He's an assistant in that sense. He still has his own free will; and slaves generally aren't good friends with their owners in the context people associate with slavery. 8) There's those two, there's King Sombra (assuming that the time he spent banished was a stance similar to hibernating) and there's Discord (assuming that the time he spent as a stone statue was also a stance simialr to hibernating). 9) According to one of the chapter books of MLP, Cadance is Celestia's niece. Her alicorn...yness was clearly hereditary; but it makes you wonder whether that makes her Luna's daughter, or the daughter of one of Celestia's siblings that we have no knowledge of yet. To me, it's understandable, but a little over the top. It was really not a matter to be so fussed over, but it was. 2. I I think Luna was loved from day one, but I can't be sure. Her popularity could rise or fall. It's something we'll have to see. 3. I think it's because she's a princess. 4. Alicorns usually have royal blood, so they are appointed as princesses. Somewhat similar to real life. 5. Faust was going to make Celestia a Queen, but since Queens are often seen as baddies, she made her a princess instead. Purely commercial. 6. She can be a little selfish at times, but nopony's perfect. She is more generous than the average pony though. Somewhat similar to Applejack and Honesty. We've all seen Applejack lie before; just because it's their element, it doesn't make them perfect in that area. 7. Far from it. From what I can tell, they're very close. Almost in a brother-sister kinda way. 8. I think that's because they weren't made alicorns, but were from the beginning.
Megas 27,850 June 12, 2013 Share June 12, 2013 (edited) What is the problem with Derpy? Why is she so hated by some people? To me, she's a cute bubble-head popularised by Crissy Snow from the old Three's Company show. I don't think they hate her, I think it's that they're annoyed at how much value they place on her being a BG character and all(seriously there are people harping on Season 3 just because Derpy was hardly in it). Some also found her offensive Would Luna really be so loved if more were known about her? Is she better kept as a background character? We don't need to no more about her, at least not yet. And(don't know how to put this the right way), she doesn't need anymore love, she's already one of the most popular characters Why is Cadance princess of the Crystal pony kingdom? Wouldn't a crystal pony be a better candidate? Likely because they thought Cadance would be a good leader Why are only alicorns princesses? Is there racism in Equestria? Because Kings and Queens are evil according to Hasbro. And yes, both HWE and Bridle Gossip hints at this If Celestia is a princess, doesn't this mean there should be a King or Queen around? See above How exactly does Rarity represent the element of Generosity? Vanity I can see, but Generocity? Any generocity she has displayed has been couched in vanity. She was orginally supposed to be the element of Inspiration, but they changed it for reasons I can't remember(probably because of executive meddling). Also see Suited for Success to see why she deserves the element of generosity Is Spike Twilight's slave? What exactly is his relationship with her? No. He is likely treated as her son and/or brother Are only Celestia and Luna long-lived? Cadance seemed to be quite young as Twilight's foal-sitter. Yes. They confirmed Twilight was Mortal, so the same probably applies to Cadance Follow up on last question: If Cadance was indeed so young and was already a princess, what could she have done to earn the position at that age, considering all the hoops Twilight had to jump through? (Pun intended.) Or was she simply born a princess? And then what were her parents? According to one of the books Cadance was originally a Pegasus, though I don't remember what she did in order to become a Princess. If I also recall, Celestia found Cadance, so I'm gonna take a wild guess and say she's either an orphan or was abandoned Edited June 12, 2013 by Godot
