See title, but honestly this pony is confused. Back in my day when th interwebs was aol disks and loud modems we would talk in forums or chats about all kinds of / couples. Ryoko/Ayeka, Harley/Ivy, Demona/Elisa etc. Many of these folks went on to writting fiction based on these fan made couples....Horseapples I'm off topic. I can not get a straight answer and all the art or fics I read have shipping written all over em. I COULD assume...but id rather just ask lol.

Yeah, shipping is essentially creating some form of romantic relationship between two characters. I'm not sure where the term came from, but there are tons of ways of interpreting it. (Shipping on Sundays, this ship has set sail, etc.).

The term shipping refers to taking two characters from the show and putting them into a relationship(Well actually it can I guess technically be between a OC and a show character, not sure if its still shipping with two OC's or not, I think it is though.)

Anyways typically it is two characters from the show put into a romantic relationship in a fanfic or something of that nature.

So I guess that basically yes that would be what it is, if I understand your question.

I'm not sure, but I think the term "shipping" came from relationship. I think someone decided to come up with "relationshipping" as shipping is when you put two characters in a relationship, but relationshipping didn't have a nice ring to it so they decided to take the beginning off of it and leave it as "shipping."

Yea I didn't even know what "shipping" Even was until I joined this forum. Where do people come up with these random words that mean something entirely different than what you would think they mean anyway?

(edited)

I never heard of the term "shipping" either for pairing two characters before, until I went further into the brony fandom. before that I jsut called them couples or used the "/"

I think it's driven mroe towards Show characters vs OCs...because as a furry,we never used the term shipping. It seems to be a MLP only thing...but it could be used i nother fandoms for like lets say naruto.

Sometimes ythe term "Shipping" is followed by a name mashup....such as mine which is Flutters and Dashie.. like Twinkle Shy would be Twilight and Flutters, Apple Dash would be Apple Jack and Dashie....etcetera.

Yes, but it's not really that much of a "new" term.  It was an oft used term in the prime of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom, and that was 11/12 years ago or longer.

And I always thought "slash" was for same sex (usually male-male) fan pairings.
